Ovidius B1 USB-C to 3.5mm Audio Adaptor US$75 (~A$112.16) Delivered @ Linsoul Audio

100

This is regarded as one of the best sounding USB-C to 3.5mm audio adaptors - if not the best - but this 50% discount is so heavy because it comes with some caveats that can impact the user experience. This is up in the desktop realm of performance, at least when it comes to single-ended (non-balanced) audio. Power is sufficient to drive everything but perhaps super low sensitivity headphones (think HE-6, Susvara).

Utilises a 'custom' quad AKM DAC which 'only' goes up to 24-bit/192kHz, reflecting that this is a much older AKM implementation that has been handpicked for excellence. Regarded for detail, timbre, transparency without tonal harshness, no compromise on soundstage presentation, and dynamic realism. Still has some of that AKM house design which smooths the sound ever so slightly (arguably realistically), but this will pair well with a lot of headphones and earphones if you want a portable or travel option.

So what are the caveats?

  • Does not play well at all with iOS, if that's your purpose immediately skip this as it will set gain to max and not change
  • Proprietary 2.5mm to USB-C cable used to connect
  • Tuning method is more subjective, so noise floor is audible on sensitive IEMs, which will require the supplied impedance adaptor

If you're not an ASR acolyte and this sits within your potential use cases, this is an amazing deal. Enjoy!

  • How does this compare to CS43131 DACs of a similar form factor?

    • +2

I've personally heard the Tempotec E44, and that brings a warmer tonal balance that narrows soundstage compared to entry level desktop setups. Detail retrieval is a bit mushy, though dynamics are strong.

If your intended uses for this are with headphones/earphones that are analytical or low/anaemic in the bass, that even older Cirrus/Wolfson design will make them sound more natural in timbre. When I used it with the Sundara it sounded fantastic, but when I used it with the 6XX I was impressed with the technical performance for a dongle, but it had a lot of mid-bass.

I would say this is a clear step up from that in terms of neutral tonality, timbre and also technical performance, though conversely you were able to get the Tempotec E44 for like $70 after cashbacks and coupons during AliE sales, probably still close to that. So decide based on your budget and your gear.

Won’t buy as I have an iPhone but +1 for the detailed description.

  • very tempted as my usb-c to 3.5mm adapter just stopped working….

not sure how often I will use this though… maybe once per…. year?

    • Probably not for you then!

  • Not for me yet, still using the late LG androids with QDAC inbuilt.

  • Could have been $40 USD if you bought a $70 gift card on sale during black friday. Wish I did now.

    • Still great value as it is. How many would have even been allocated anyway?

Previously they've had 50% gift cards in allocations of 500 and 500, and they disappear in minutes.

      • Yeah, but that's not the ozbargain way. Maybe I'll be lucky and they repeat for christmas.. Btw how would these compare to the lg v30/50/60?

        • This is top tier. Also I'm now looking for details on the discount, and apparently it was for everyone who applied in a 3-hour window on the 24th. Dang.
