  • bit wide but cracker price yea

    • It might not be all that wide with the APS-C size sensors that it often mounts onto though?
I've got a 30mm on my NEX-6 and it's almost a bit zoomed for general purpose stuff.

I have this lens. It's really great for street photography or indoor places that you need a wide shot.

Prime lens wise, most people will favour 35mm as it is more neutral. Be sure to do your research before jumping on 24mm

    • would you recommend this over the 35mm for astro?

      • Can't comment unfortunately on astro. Haven't had time to go since I got the lens

Hey what sensor format do you have, if you're looking at this lens I can only assume you have a FX. What sort of astrophotography you trying to do, some startrails on wide angle views I'm assuming is what you're after specifically? If so,

        • the widest angle you can get will serve you best for it, so a 24mm would do better for you over a 35mm but you might consider the difference in scene negligible for the price of the upgrade. Usually startrails look more stunning with a bigger scene in the view and more landscape style shots
        • the apparture size matters a lot, you're trying to get as much light into the camera as possible so you don't have to bump up your ISO to compensate. Large ISO means more noise, so you end up with better quality startrails and less noise in the finished product. But post processing and stacking can help remove noise too
        • aperture size of f/2.8 is respectable but there are larger sizes if you were willing to spend $1000k+ which I think is an absolute waste for a beginner anyway because 80% of photography is the skill of the photographer and post processing than the hardware you work with. One day you might feel the f/2.8 is holding you back and then is the time to upgrade, there's never a real reason to get the best things and a $1-$1.5k total setup in photography can give you results a $4k setup would if you were comfortable with the tools you have, so don't fall for that trap!
        • with this lens you can take a ton of time-lapse photos using either a time-lapse accessory or your own cameras settings depending on your camera body features. Set the aperture to max and the ISO to something that works with say a 1min long exposure and see what the result looks like. Then you can stack those photos on your PC and do the post processing to get you there!
        • with startrails I'm not a purist. I think it's much better to take say 15x 2min long exposures and stack them instead of doing a single 30min long exposure, I am not game enough to do such a long exposure and hope my hardware can handle it lol, though I know there's purists out there..

Hope that helps, I was doing astrophotography for about 5yrs a decade ago, but the basics are still the same :)

ok so i've used the 35mm f2.8 Zeiss for astro and personally I like it for a thicker MW. this focal range is still no good for nebulas but LMC and MW look decent. it's manual focus isn't super fine but neither has any Samyang lens i've tried (I use the 14mm with wide field shots and the 135mm for deepscapes) so this is really an in between focal length.

24mm will make it slightly easier to get good results without tracking or stacking but obviously you'll have a thinner milky way. probably makes great MW panoramas once you avoid the parallax by mounting on the trip right.

outside astro the 35mm has autofocus which is a big plus for street photography.

this is taken with the 35mm. It isnt great but shows you what I mean my thicker MW

        • Beautiful photo Hugh!

    • 24mm is extremely terrible for street photography imo, definitely isn't for everyone

I've got the Tamron 24mm f2.8 for Sony FE. love it

    • +1

Yeah - they are about the same price so if I was in the market for a cheap 24mm I'd go the Tamron as well. Both have their pros & cons, but the Tamron is I suspect built a little better. (And yes, I have one as well).

  • Is it good for gimbal setup or should I go for 1.4 version of a 24mm?

  • This is a good 35mm version (IMO, as a beginner), which I just received.

For $9 less, you can order it from Amazon US and wait 3 weeks for it:

  • It's a real shame all the lens manufacturers have more or less dropped the A mount. I would have gotten this otherwise.
