  • How do you return the modem?

    • +2

Either in person to a Telstra shop, or you mail it to them.

      • +1

And you go instore but they tell you to wait and make an appointment to return it.

    • quoting from Skylex's previous post:

https://www.telstra.com.au/internet/nbn Then go to the bottom: How do I return the modem?

We don’t currently require you to return the modem when you cancel your Upfront Internet plan. You can recycle the modem, or keep it.

      • +1

Unfortunately they changed it, so that line is no longer in the FAQ. We have to return it now.

        • I cancelled service (3 months ago) after 2 months of free trial and I wasn’t asked to return the modem. So free modem yay

        • +1

It turns out it is still there. Under the heading "Existing Telstra internet customers" Then "How do I return the Telstra smart modem if I cancel my plan?" It says: "We don’t currently require you to return the modem when you cancel your Upfront Internet plan. You can recycle the modem, or keep it."

So the TLDR is we can keep the modem.

          • @[Deactivated]: The website: https://www.telstra.com.au/internet/nbn has changed again, and it no longer mentions this at the bottom. They keep changing it, so who knows? If you really want to keep it though, a TIO dispute if they refuse to let you will probably change their mind.

I don't need the modem…. how do I not get it..?

    • +1

You can try calling them. It is possible, but chat mostly just reads off a script and forces you to get it.

    • +1

I just don't return them. They never ask for it back or charge me.
Edit: Apparently they've changed their wording in T&C which might mean they do charge now.

      • +1

Yeah I still have mine, no idea what to do with it

    • +4

During checkout, you can untick the modem request and they won't send you the modem.

      • +1

This wasn't an option when I signed up last time. That's probably why they want them back now, they are only sending them out to people that actually request them.

  • Can I just simply use my own modem?

    • +2

      Yes, it's just standard IPoE.

  • +3

Not worth it for the pain that Telstra gives you, or Optus for that matter

    • Mine was pretty painless. They sent the modem right away, and the 4G worked out of the box. Then I got a month extra of free internet before it was officially activated, and canceling was as simple as talking to their online chat. I also ended up with double points, so 100k, and then we didn't even need to return the modems.

      • Wow - great work!

  • +4

From last deal ($2 for 2 months) most of us did not get charged for not returning the modem as per their terms and conditions. On that deal:

We don’t currently require you to return the modem when you cancel your Upfront Internet plan. You can recycle the modem, or keep it. Here’s how it works:

To cancel your plan please message us or call 13 22 00. You can’t cancel via My Telstra.
Currently, you won’t be asked to return the Telstra-supplied modem, or be charged a non-return fee.
If you don’t want to keep the modem, we will explain your recycling options. You’ll also find these on our device recycling page.

You’ll receive an email confirmation that you’re cancelling your service. And that’s it!

Looks like they changed it now

For new customers, there’s no additional cost if you stay connected for 24 months. If you leave before 24 months, you’ll need to return your modem or pay a $200 non-return fee.

    • +1

there's an option to choose not to receive a modem when placing the order.

  • +3

    … then $95, $110, $140 per month

Roughly $20+ more expensive than another company, say Superloop.

Let's be honest, on the home front, Telstra is for those that don't know better.

    • With Telstra for almost 1 year now. Been through ABB, Launtel, Superloop, Future Broadband. Had issues with all of them during peak time (ping spikes, packetloss affecting online gaming).

No issues with Telstra. If my ping spikes, it’s barely over 10ms and it doesn’t happens very often. You get what you pay for.

  • How does every other internet provider let me sign up and see prices for NBN fixed wireless but Telstra can't..

    • click on 'compare plans'

  • Speaking of that last deal - did they ever start billing those that didn't "activate" (the order would not show as completed until they could see their modem plugged in) I left because of shite download speeds on Xbox so didn't end up seeing if it just continued to show as inactive forever despite working just fine

    • +1

Yes, mine activated after 4 weeks. So the next bill was $1. I paid $2 total.

      • Mine activated after about 4 months:) Was hoping for 4 years but well.

        • Nice. I haven't actually paid for anything since. I was using Dodo freebies, but they changed it to $10/mo. Currently using Aussie, and will give Telstra another shot after that.

  • +3

I spent over 6 months cancelling a service I never asked for. Continuously getting called, bills sent, nothing ever activated.

Insisting I have NBN rock up to connect me despite already being on the NBN.

They just aren't worth the hassle.

I spoke to so many managers promising its sorted.

Never using their mobile service as a result now. Happy to stick with WW prepaid.

    • +1

I wanted to switch providers to Telstra, and they said "you don't have the nbn".

"Er, yes I do and my existing provider is (whoever) and I have an nbn labelled modem at home"

      "no you don't"
      "yes I do"

x many times back and forth.

Finally gave in and they scheduled for my "first" service to be installed. Installer arrived and was -extremely- confused by my existing nbn connection.

So Telstra people (specifically Telstra Doncaster) are extremely dopey. Stay far away from them.

      • Definitely sounds like they haven't changed

      • has your NBN connection type changed recently? Surprised their backend is not synced properly with NBN on the connection type database.

I avoid going into a Telstra shop. just use their website to sign up

  • +1

Can you set a future activation date?

  • +1

Are we still eligible if used previous $2 for 2 months deal? Also if someone can pls advise how many Telstra points we were supposed to get on that deal, it seems I did not get any. It might be worth contacting them and ask for it.

    • +4

Yes, you can sign up again. You were supposed to get 50k from the last deal.

  • Mine connected immediately upon signup, I was surprised

  • CGNAT or Public IPv4 on Telstra NBN?

  • What if you are on HFC or FTTP - the modem stays with the house - there is nothing for Telstra to give you…

    • You'd need a Router otherwise it's not much use

    • can confirm Telstra will send you the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 3 for FTTP. FTTP customers still need the wifi and routing functions. but you are right the modem function is redundant for FTTP and HFC

    • +1

FYI, Telstra calls its router "modem" and the DOCSIS/HFC modem/fibre ONT "NTD" or "NBN box".
      Noobs.

  • Is there any credit checks?

    • Yes.

  • Cheers OP! 🍻
