Who keep buying up all the Pis? It's been years since I've been able to find one. It's more likely a Pi 5 gets released than finding stock.

    • +3

It's wild. Had an Rpi 4 for a year and sold it last week for more than I bought it for. Have nfi why peeps want them so bad

      • What are they worth second hand? Might sell my spare I have laying around

        • +2

Lol i sold my 4GB pi 4 for 130$ plus shipping i paid 100$ for it but k didnt use it so im waiting for thr pi5 that may come out next year or 2024 im hoping for, but its likely stock will ve shit till amaerica open up the new chip factory

      • Lots of online guides use Pis. Some people just want to blindly follow things so they need Pis.

I use them to power digital displays. I know it's not the best solution but they self boot after power disconnects, except when a client changes their wifi password or id they are foolproof.

the supply shortage to hobbyists is because pi foundation during covid and chip shortage was prefferancing commercial buyers to keep their businesses going ….and they are still prefferancing commercial buyers , not sure when that will change. In the meantime it’s impacting adoption as schools…. at my sons school they need to share the PIs between classes and he can’t get one for home to work on his schools project due to supply shortage ….they are really alienating the market that made then great …. education and hobbyists.

  • OOS for me as well

Core Electronics should be supported for not price gouging. They have great service too. Don’t pay Jaycar’s premium prices.

    • +6

100%, i have dealt with these guys and support was ultra fast

  • It's a bit frustrating that they don't have them in stock but you can pay $160 for one as part of a kit of parts. I understand they have to make money, but the cheapest kit is $160. I can't quite believe an SD card, power supply and some cables are the same price as the device itself.

    • +1

the 2GB pi 4, a power cable and an SD card with no case (i already have a case) is $116 plus postage.

    • +2

The add-ons have always been around that price. I commend Core-Electronics (not associated, but use them for a lot of other electronics purchases) on balancing bumping the price of the Pi's themselves with providing the kits. I agree its frustrating, but while there is a supply shortage, it is what it is.

As is mentioned elsewhere, if you want to buy one off Amazon/E-Bay/anywhere else second hand, they are nudging and frequently exceeding the kit price anyway. Dont look for pi zero 2 w's - their markup is worse again.

I have 2 Pi4's (Retropie, and then a pi-hole/simple always on web server for some monitoring/VPN server) and a Pi3 I have at a friends place connected to a hard drive for a simple offsite backup solution.

  • Nooo just missed out. Thanks for sharing op

  • Why would you use this for a DIY NAS and anyone care to share their experience? Can you add 4 or more disks in Raid 5 to such a setup for a proper home NAS? Or is it typically just poor man's (or traveller's) version of the NAS with max one USB disk (which will defeat the purpose).

    • +9

For DIY NAS you're better off with x86 - just buy a cheap old DELL, and you're good to go with FreeNAS/TrueNAS/etc/etc - you can add as many drives as you want, multi-drive USB enclosures work just fine, but you can also add SATA/SAS cards if you need to - there's plenty of multi port cards on AliExpress and drive enclosures to go with them.

      • Thanks will have a look.

For about $40 more, you can get a full fledged W11 USFF pc (6500T, 8gb of ram, 256gb HDD) that is way more powerful than this and uses little power (<10W on idle) that can double up as a office pc and media center.

    • +1

I already have an optiplex in USFF won't fit more than 1 or max two drives, also I wanted to keep it one box and small footprint (like a normal NAS), hence looking for dedicated solution.

      • +2

Just buy a USB external 4/5/8 bay drive enclosure, and voila.
You don't need to put the drives inside the Optiplex 👍

  • Seems to be back in stock now!

    • While its not showing as 'out of stock', if you were to try and add to cart it errors saying its not available.

      • Ah, damn!

lol 2gb model people actually buy this.

    • Why not? Makes for a great OpenWRT device.

  • Official Raspberry Pi 4 Desktop Kit AU (4GB) $249 in stock

    • Lmao, kinda defeats the purpose of a raspberry pi when its so exxy.
