Great find. Sold out online it tells me, though

    • are you sure? I just checked, and it lets me add to the cart and order!

      • it’s definitely sold out for me

  • Is this locked to Optus?
    Thanks.

    • +5

Yes! but get in touch with Optus customer support through the app and they will give you the unlock code for free.

    • +42

Nothing is locked at Optus. They threw away the keys

      • +3

Huawei never owned their keys to begin with.

      • -4

Don't you mean they never pad locked the back door to hackers?

    • I bought one a few years ago and it claimed to be locked, but wasn't.

      • My one is different, it’s locked, doesn’t accept belong SIM.

        • Yeah a few years ago none of their USB or pocket wifi modems were locked. Then they started doing it.

    • Depends but from experience it's network unlocked but the software blocks Telstra SIMs.. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/10491961/redir
Not sure how that's not breaking some rules if you're allowing Telstra resellers but not Telstra SIMs…

  • What do you guys use these for?

    • +4

      Mining for bitcoin

    • +9
      1. Mobile work setup, where you need internet access for your laptop, but don’t want to drain your phone battery by tethering

      2. 4G home internet backup for nbn outages (many routers, e.g my Asus RT-66 AU, allows a USB modem such as this to be plugged in to the back, meaning that all of your wi-fi connected devices at home can still work seamlessly using the same SSID

      • +4

Just an FYI, this USB is E3372-608 which isn’t working with any modem USB port.

They were given out E3372-607 3 years ago - that one works with most modem.

        • +3

LOL… a USB modem that doesn't work with a USB port… just what nobody needed or asked for.

          • @[Deactivated]: It works with computer USB port - just not recognised with the modems anymore. They rewrite the firmware so requires a different driver.

            • @xmessa: Ah ok, thanks.

    • +5

To conceal within my car's dashboard, plugged into an aftermarket head unit.
Gives me constant connectivity (as long as the ignition is on) to audio streaming, Google Maps, voice assistant and more without having to tether my phone or run the battery down via wireless Android Auto (which I find is very power-thirsty!).

      • So you buy a prepaid card and put into the device right?

        • +1

Pretty much - get those boost 28 day prepaids via CR and you've got free home internet or car connectivity

    • Scraping open API's

  • Ouch, that's a burn on the recent E3372 deal

  • Does this send all my data direct to ccp

    • +51

This one is a step up. Chinese devices send data to CCP. This is optus, so it makes data available to everyone not just CCP.

      • -7

Is Optus owned and operated by Singapore, look it up before you speak…

        • +6

Yes, Optus is a singaporean business. Your point is…?

        • -6

mind you singaporeans are mostly chinese technically

    • -3

Sends data to CCP, Putin and north Kim Jon Wo

      • +2

Not just CCP, basiclly everyone who can hack/walk through the dataset owned by Optus.

Recent leaking Optus customer data are available for free on the market now.

  • Anyone know if you can flash these or even if there is a local API or something to pull SMS messages? I would love to have my second Sim which is only used for receiving otps to stay at home in a raspberry pi or similar and forward the message content to me via telegram

Do you really think a $9 device could be modified?

      • +3

How does the price point have anything to do with modifiability?

        • Cheap manufacturing and budget hardware aren't exactly the foundation of an open-source device.

Can you name a similar device that can be modified?

    • +3

Honestly just use an old smartphone for this

    • +5

for anyone interested in doing a similar project, the python module https://github.com/Salamek/huawei-lte-api works very well with this dongle, just create a route that only allows 192.168.8.1 (the USB routers IP) and you can access the api very easily :)

I will be posting my source for the full telegram bot when its done :)

I'm not sure where you got the free 4GB data from. Not mentioned anywhere on that page, nor does it mention it comes with a SIM at all.

  • Will felix sim work in this?

    • Yes, but they may cancel your plan as it's against their T&C's.

    • +1

I bought one from Big W, it’s network locked. May not take Vodafone wholesale SIMs

  • Would this work with PFSense / OPNSense

    • +2

It should present itself as a USB ethernet interface, in theory. It works on Openwrt

  • Hmm seems like excess effort compared to just tethering? So many cheap or free SIMs out there with heaps of data - can just load into phone that supports dual SIM.

    • +1

Ita more convienient so you dont have to keep turning on and off your phone tetering etc.

      • +1

What, to turn on WiFi hotspot on phone is somehow less convenient than buying and lugging around this extra device, and maintaining an extra Optus plan for this network-locked modem?! To turn on hotspot on phone is the same effort as to turn on the flashlight. So how on earth is this more convenient or even more economical?!?

This is also less convenient than buying a standalone 4g router. Then just insert free SIM. I bought a used one on FB marketplace for $20 which is not locked to any network. Why bother with a USB stick?

    • +1

The hotspot really kill my iphone battery

      • What, and this doesn't kill your laptop battery?

    • +1

Sounds like excess wasted money buying a dual-SIM phone just to do what a $9 USB modem can do. ;-D

      Also:

I used to tether or hotspot my phone to my laptop for internet access. Tethering with the OEM cable and charger my phone battery only lasted about 40 minutes (with the phone charging at the same time). So I had to buy a Quickcharge charger deal on here ($39) and a high current charging cable on ebay ($17) and still only got 2-3 hours. After which of course you have a flat phone if you need to go anywhere.

With a one of these plugged into a powerbank instead, a car cigarette socket charger, a car stereo head unit, an NBN modem, etc - your phone battery isn't drained.

      • +1

excess wasted money buying a dual-SIM phone

Single SIM phone works fine too.

Many many phone deals on OzB are for a dual SIM phone. Somehow the dual SIM ones are even cheaper than single SIM? For example…

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/734104

one of these plugged into a powerbank instead, a car cigarette socket charger

Are you saying it has a WiFi hotspot? Listing says nothing about that. I think you are VERY mistaken.

Would pay a fortune for these back in the day

  • This or Optus Alcatel Link Zone MW41 4G? What is the max number of devices connected?

  • All gone in SYD area

  • I picked two units up at Kmart Casuarina (NT). They are stored at the service centre at back of the department. Apparently, their computer said they had over 100 4G USB in stock. I am now using it in Canberra using a Vodafone simcard. It works on my personal laptop. I tried setting the 4G USB up on my Tplink Archer VR1600v modem/router. It does not work (or I was not able to configurate it). modem/router unit did not recognised the 4G USB.
