You Go to a Restaurant and The Door Says They Shut at 10pm. Current Time Is 9.50pm Should They Allow You in?

Just an interesting one I would like to know peoples thoughts on esp for Australia. Also if this changes from a restaurant vs takeaway store vs others as well?

But basically I'm of the thought that you should be able to go to a restaurant and if it says 10pm close that means you have to be out the door by then. So if you arrive at 9.45pm and order a few items they can easily cook up for takeaway then they should allow you in. They wouldn't be closing the kitchen before 10pm (or at least around just before then).

I have however seen restaurants stay open past 10pm (but only serve up to then) and allow customers to eat inside. And on the flip side I've seen restaurants state they close at 10pm, and they're lights are out at 9.30pm or are pissed off because you came in at 9.30pm and they've already packed up and cleaned half an hour early.

Now obviously this depends on the restaurant and usually when you walk in the server is nice enough to let you know whether they're still taking orders and ultimately thats what I base it off of.

But I am interested to know what peoples "expectation is".

So a 10PM Close times means that you:

    think about it this way
at 9.45pm as an owner you are thinking $$$$
at 9.45pm as a worker you are thinking i aint getting paid overtime i want to leave at 10.00pm on the dot

    • Exactly. I remember one time when I was a lad working a McJob, we'd had a pretty dead hour from 10pm that night so half the crew had been sent home early and we'd basically cleaned and stashed everything away. At about 10:50 or so a party of a dozen or so visibly drunk yet surprisingly dapper adults rock up, and they ask whether they can make a massive order. Unbelievably, they're all willing to wait for the chicken and everything to cook from scratch, too. So the manager says "let's do it", has us basically open the breading tables back up and set the cookers and fryers up again, and turns what would have been a clutch 11:30pm close into us still being there well past midnight.

Depends on place. Some want the money. Some want to go home.

Maybe they should start to state on google or their site: Opened until 'time' (means you should be out by) as well as last orders by 'time' (regardless of eat in or take away)

It’s entirely up to them. Some have last order times well before closing, others happy for customers to stay beyond closing time as they clean up and prep.

They can even shut early at 9:00 if they want to. Zero obligation.

  • Ideally, a 10 pm close time means I can order food up until 10 pm even if I arrive at 9:50 pm. I wouldn't expect to be able to dine in.

Realistically, a 10 pm close time means that I will likely be told the kitchen closed at 9:30 pm or 9:45 pm, and as such I would be knocked back and have to either eat nothing or go get a kebab/McDonald's/China Bar/whatever else is open at that time.

A 10pm close time means the business has completely packed up and they close the door at 10pm, regardless of the business type.

Kitchen is clean (not just stopped cooking, but clean and ready for the next day). Till is counted and emptied. Customers have left.

Always ask what time the kitchen closes. Some are 30 mins out, some 60.

10 mins out is asking to be turned away

I would just call before or if I'm already there, just politely ask them at the door if their kitchen is still open.

I wouldn't want pissed off people cooking my food anyway. I know it's OzB here, but I still wouldn't want free additional ingredients.

To be fair, there were words on the screen in front of them and a Reply button. We're lucky we only got one 'comrade/Labor' comment, really.

        • I just cannot fathom how this comment: under comrade 'banese work is evil!!! is said without a hint of irony. And of course @Payton upvotes it lol

I feel like you could ask for a quick and easy takeaway meal and the kitchem would serve you the chicken that fell on the floor with a smile

  • You must be a fast eater.

To me 10pm closes means that when they shut the doors. No one else in and ideally most customers gone (though they might let a table linger for a short time whilst they are cleaning up). I wouldn’t expect to order after 930pm and that would be pushing it for dine in. Of course there are exceptions, but you’d have to ask individually. Some areas are impact by licensing and council rules as to how long they can stay open and have people in the premises.

they have a right to deny your business even if its 6pm.. just saying

  • +4

My expectation is that I would acknowledge the time stated and politely ask if it is possible to order. Whatever is their response is what it is.

As someone who did this work, you get ones that turn up 3 mins after you close who get upset if you won't cook for them 😂

  • +4

If someone comes up to me in the office and hands me a piece of work at 4:45pm most of the time I'm leaving it until the next day, can't expect restaurant workers to not do the same.

  • Fair chance of getting a spit sandwich I reckon. If you want takeaway go to a takeaway.
