While I love my two moka pots I found aeropress (inverted) gave more consistent results with quicker prep times. At this price if you’ve even half considered trying moka style I would still recommend.

    • What beans do you use Jimothy?

      • +15

I actually unironically rate the ALDI ones.

The ALDI near me has a very high turnover of beans , never had an issue with freshness. Sometimes I’ll just get the pre ground if I’m lazy.

1 pack flat out lasting me a week

        • +2

          Thanks! I'll check it out

        • +2

Shhhh don't tell everyone. Aldi dark roast is life.

        • +1

I agree on the freshness of Aldi beans. I buy the cheapest (dark $11.99) because it moves off the shelf the fastest.

          • +1

@Loopholio: Used to be the Aldi Medium that moved the fastest at my Aldi untill they put the price up to $14.99.

I guess it’s a choice between whether one likes plastic or aluminium with their coffee 😂

      • +8

I guess I’ll go back to my Nescafé blend 43 to wash my half pack of darts down with

        (Didn’t neg u btw)

      • +3

Likewise, I want to try a moka pot but I want a stainless steel pot, not aluminium. Not sure why they're negging you.

    • +1

I really enjoyed my aeropress but someone stole the plunger side. Think it was a seedy work associate who turned it into a bong!!

Funnily enough though, I now prefer the taste of my moka pot over my expensive home espresso machine.

Aeropress is so much easier to clean though

      • +1

I could never get good coffee out of my moka pot, not sure what I did wrong. Very happy with my espresso machine, easy to clean too.

        • +7

Moka I found to be quite hit and miss for at least the first few goes until you get a feel for how it reacts on your stove.

I found pre heating the water helped, and open the lid so you can spot the transition to the ‘gold honey’ look and take off the heat, really helped in getting a non-burnt taste (pretty common issue with moka pot beginner).

        • +1

I think it's because I like the strong earthy taste it produces. I'm away from home mostly so my espresso machine doesn't get used as much.

        • +2

Did you run the moka pot under cold water after it's finished brewing? Apparently it helps to stop it from overdoing the coffee.

I also boil water from the kettle and use that rather than wait for it to heat up on the stove. Just gotta be careful when screwing it back on top.

    • i mean it's a completely different brew method. it will very much depend on your preferred tastes in coffee, your grind selection, and your patience in making the brew.

i do agree that aeropress is a bit more forgiving, but for people who like thicker, 'stronger' coffee more akin to espresso, aeropress is never ever going to get what you want regardless of how easy it is.

if anyone wants any tips for moka just ask! it can be a little finnicky but once you have it 'dialled in' it doesn't take very long and it's simple as. a good moka every day is definitely worth the pain of getting a few wrong in the beginning, imo.

      • +1

agreed moka is the way to go if you want a strong coffee, way stronger pressure helps to produce a stronger brew.

  • Great price. Thanks OP!

  • +2

If only it worked on an induction top.

  • Looks a good price for this brand but I am wondering are these any different to any other brand in the same size?

    • +1

basically no, they all do the same thing. you may find it easier to get replacement parts for a bialetti over another brand though.

  • I don't like the black residue that builds up inside the aluminium moka pot.

    • +3

You're not supposed to eat the black residue - just leave it alone 👍

    • Black residue? How are you cleaning it? You may have damaged the coating and raw aluminium is oxidising. If so you need to throw it away.

You should just clean it with water, and maybe dish soap if necessary.

Perhaps replace it with a stainless steel one

      • Yes I think so. People have suggested cleaning with lemon juice but I don't think it'd solve the problem of oxidation.

      • +1

What do you mean about the oxidising? Aluminium forms a layer of aluminium oxide as soon as it’s exposed to oxygen (as in, as soon as it’s formed in the factory). You can only achieve “raw aluminium” in a zero oxygen environment after casting. It’s not dangerous if you scrape off the black stuff. The black layer is coffee oils and residue, seasoning.

        • I've made the mistake of putting an aluminium moka pot in the dishwasher. The entire pot is black, and if you touch it, black dust remains on your fingers. Wipe it down, the rust reappears. Textbook oxidation.

Aluminium can absolutely rust, with a strong base like dishwasher powder, it won't form the safe aluminium oxide you are referring to. Eating aluminium rust is not safe.

This is a great deal, and If you MUST clean it,use BiCarb and White Vinegar then rinse well…this is also the perfect combination to use to pour down any sink to deoderize it..

  • 3 cups would still be pretty small though right? Is it enough for a mug?

    • The brews that come out of a moka pot are a good deal more concentrated than pourover/drip. Having said that, I have a 6 cup version, and get around 180-200g of liquid with maybe 20-24g of beans.

      • +4

yep - we use our '3 cup' for milk drinks for one person and our '6 cup' for milk drinks for two.

if you are used to filter coffee, the same applies but you will have a shorter, stronger brew - you can always top it up with hot water to get your full mug and a similar strength a la a long black.

        • +2

Yeah ok, I mostly have milk drinks, so maybe a 3 cup is enough.

  • +3

let me set the record straight for those that think this is an "Espresso maker" that's false advertising it's not the same brew method and it certainly doesn't make espresso.

    • It is espresso, it doesn't achieve the same pressure so it is a weak espresso, but it's the same method.

      • people need to look up what espresso means when translated from italian ….. "pressed coffee"

    • 100% - it's not espresso. it's 'espresso-like' in terms of the coffee:water ratio (compared to every other brew method that isn't espresso), but that's it.

    • +2

The Wikipedia articles for Espresso and Moka pot also mention this. "However, a typical moka coffee is extracted at relatively low pressures of 1 to 2 bar while standards for espresso coffee specify a pressure of 9 bar. Therefore, moka coffee is not considered to be an espresso and has different flavor characteristics."

    Does this take International Roast?
