    Over $30/TB isn’t tremendous value…

    • with the 5% off when you buy 2 it comes to 29.07
again not the best but this drives usual price appears to be $250ish

test them. I just bought 4 iron ironwolf pro 16TB drives from the Amazon US via AU and 2 were DOA, 1 showing 566gb. sent all 4 back

    • any suggested windows software for testing them?

      • CrystalDiskMark? Really just mounting and formatting should be enough.

        • thankyou

I bought these 6TB drives in March for about 180 and they're going strong

    • And that’s why OzB don’t buy Seagate

no need to neg, seagate are shite

    Not a bargain, sorry OP.

    • it may not be a bargain from a per tb cost but when my storage needs grow slowly and 6tb will cover me for several years - and i dont need to spend extra time doing raid scrubbing for capacites that are empty - then this is actually a bargain (i think) for a low power low heat wd disk.

the 6tb blue is cheaper currently but its an smr disk

    • I don't want or will ever need 18TB, so paying any extra is wasted 'value'.

the same as no computer will ever need more than 640MB RAM hey?

        • +2

image buying 32GB of ram back when everyone had 640MB.
how poor would you be after such a purchase !!

        • It was 640KB of RAM, not 640MB - no one was even close to running 640MB RAM at the time haha.
Incidentally, my first computer had 4MB of RAM costing $80 a MB. Yep $320 for 4MB of RAM. Fun times!

      • Yep. exactly, buying 4x 18TB disks is extremely unnecessary right now.
maybe in 2 years i'll buy another 2x 6tb and migrate my nas to 6tb instead of 4tb and that should be good for a long time.

Blue and Red disks serve a different purpose.

      • I was considering the wd blue for my nas for a long time, but, since I dont need that extra space right now, these 6tb are cheaper (not per TB, but money out of pocket) and i can raid5 them if i need more space and feeling poor (down from raid6)

        id never consider seagate.

        • What do you feel is wrong with Seagate?

          • @darxtorm: A long long time ago, a Seagate disk failed on me without notice. Recently a WD failed on me with notice.
Also silicon power ssds x2 failed without notice.

            I prefer failure with notice.

but maybe things have changed. I'll keep an eye out for Seagate NAS drives and maybe i'll get two of those to accompany the two WD reds. that way, i have a split of brands.

  • and yes i did buy the 10tb elements for $220 a few months ago for backup.

it runs hotter and uses more power and offers higher performance that i dont need. so four of those in my nas would be overkill.
