    (usually $1,619)

Considering you're flying on a budget airline and the hotel is fairly cheap anyway, you really must wonder how they derive those "usual" prices.

    • +1

yeah it's about $75/night so it's not even close to $1619
More importantly Tanjung Bungah is really crappy (beaches & township), Georgetown is much better for food & accommodation….but you only goto Penang for the food, if you want beaches you had across to Langkawi

      • -4

beaches you had across to Langkawi..

or just take sydney bus go to bondi..

      • Accommodation in George Town is crap but if you want budget accommodation, go to Tune Hotel and rent a scooter.

The only thing George Town has, is food and a few boring landmarks.

The place to be in Penang is Batu Ferringhi. Its got the beach during the day and cheap shopping at night.

I think weather at the moment is crap, so don't get your hopes up. Plan ahead.

        • The only thing George Town has, is food and a few boring landmarks.

Err, George Town is a UNESCO listed heritage area.

          http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1223/

It was interesting seeing the architecture and museums.

        • Batu Ferringhi? what were you smoking? it's ugly

There's a bit of reasonable accom around georgetown (certainly around the same $75 mark).
try Guerney drive…which has great food.

        • re: Penang is boring…

I went to Penang and thoroughly enjoyed myself … but you know, I enjoy history and foreign culture. I'm not big on shopping complexes or finding McDonalds when I go overseas. I wandered the streets of Georgetown (eg. the Indian and Chinese sections) and had a great time surrounded by unusual foods, architecture, wares and generally friendly people.

The Traders Hotel in Georgetown is fantastic - highly recommended. It is also the sister hotel to the Golden Sands in Batu Ferringhi, so you can enjoy the pool at both hotels (Traders and Golden Sands) … I skipped the beach at Golden Sands because I don't enjoy salesmen selling para-sail rides, but that's a personal choice.
There are some worthwhile sights in Georgetown, including Fort Cornwallis (South Australians would be familiar with Colonel Light, who was involved with establishing the fort). You also have the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion - again, also worth a visit. The architecture you can find is very interesting (although I prefer Melaka).
The food is beautiful in Penang - and very well priced, even compared to other parts of Malaysia.

Overall, I think this is an OK deal. I'd expect to pay less than $250 return (From Melbourne) and about $100 - $150 a night for very good accommodation.

    • rack rates :)

they're always about double to triple what the hotel really charges for a room. The number of times I've seen 5 star hotels claim $600-700 a night rack rates advertise their rooms at $150-200 a night is ridiculous.

according to hotels.com, 4 nights is around $430-450 (should can find cheaper)
    march 2012 airasia syd-kl return inc tax was around $200-210 ($99 1way)
so $799-450-200 = $149 is the living social profit !

assuming you bought flights in their sale. You can't really use a price from a sale 4 months ago and claim this is a bad deal.

  • +1

If AirAsia has another awesome sale, you could potentially do better.

I flew AirAsia from Sydney - KL, then KL - Penang in May this year. It was around $325 Sydney - KL return, and then less than $20 KL - Penang return. That particular hotel room is about USD68/night with breakfast (for September). It's around $610 added up.

There is of course uncertainty if one waits for another good sale…

Edit: hotel price was taken from agoda for 1-5 Sept 2012.

I assume the $799 is per person? (the website doesn't really make it clear)
If so, it is very overpriced because the hotel prices listed above are per room, not per person.

    • yeah these deals get crappier when unless you're flying/staying single and your friends all want their own room. Personally I rather pick a holiday during an airline sale and then choose a hotel during a hotel sale then take a deal like this where you're locked into everything.

      • Yep - especially when you read the terms & conditions of this deal!

    Must book between 6 August 2012 - 31 October 2012,
Book at least 30 days in advance of travel.

Valid for use from 5 September 2012 to 31 May 2013

Peak period fees of SGD $135 (AUD $105) per person per day apply between 11 December 2012 to 5 January 2013.

Plus a whole lot of other conditions. Not worth the headache for so little saving.

I'm a penang local and trust me, Flamingo Hotel isn't the sort of hotel you want to spend your long awaited holiday in. As for the included flight, I'd rather plan in advance with Malaysian Airline/ Singapore Airline (last I flew, cost me approx AUD600 return from Sydney through MAS). Long haul in budget airline isn't really what I call a holiday, more like 7 hours of suffering. No deal for me
