Don't even have a switch. I do plan to buy one. Should I grab two controllers while I can?

What have stock levels been like in the past?

    • +6

Check the price on eBay if you want a laugh.

      • +2

Dang im not into scalping myself. It's nice knowing I could make my money back

      • +2

Didn't realise it was that bad - $200 to $300…

      • But are they actually selling for that price, or just listed?

    • +3

What have stock levels been like in the past?

The previous deal back in May 2022 sold out in a few hours.

    • +3

From my experience, they quickly go out of stock and rarely get restocked.

    • +2

You need an active NSO membership to buy it.

      • True. Probably not worth it for me then. Hate the idea of that subscription expiring while I wait for the next switch discount

        • I mean, you can buy a short sub. But the problem is it might go out of stock while you faff about.

          • @Morien: Seems that I was able to buy the controllers without the membership. I made a Nintendo account but didn't join any membership. Was able to check out with the controllers

    • It was nine months since the last restock

  • How do these compare to the originals? All of mine have worn thumb sticks, but I guess there's no easy way to get these hooked up to an N64 anyway right?

    • +2

You can actually buy replacement thumbsticks that are pretty easy to swap out. Well worth it if you're still busting the N64 out.

    • I've read they are pretty much spot on the originals, except obviously with the difference in connectivity and the addition of a battery.
I've got some of these, but I have never had new N64 controllers, only old clapped out ones so can't compare.

    • +1

Just FYI - the sticks from the new controllers don't drop in to the old controllers, and even the parts are not interchangeable.

You can buy reconditioned thumbsticks ($10 at the market) or get replacement gears and DIY. Quality varies, sometimes you still end up with slop, especially if the gate pivot point is worn out, but they generally get close enough to be playable.

  • Oh wow, Vooks - That's a blast from the past. I used to live on their forums, and their quasi sister site DSAustralia. Glad to see they're still around!

    • Same. I used to listen to their podcast, although I think it was in a rather sadistic way because they were all super nerdy and way too obsessed with Nintendo as adults.

  • +1

    Nice. Bought some. Thanks

  • +1

Bought it but no confirmation via email or the website? Hoping it's just abit delayed.

    • Took about 3 minutes for it to show in My Account. It'll happen.

      • Yeap just got it! I was abit scared it got ozbargain'd.

    • Mine came about 6 minutes after into Gmail.

    • I'm still waiting on mine to gmail (at about 15 minutes now)

  • +1

Thanks for heads up, been after some since the initial batch sold out. Grabbed 2 :)

  • Managed to get four at 1:01pm. Looking forward to reliving the good old days with friends/kids. Anyone remember the swearing/cursing at OG Mario party after you wrecked your palms and then through some random event ended up losing pole position?

And hopefully they’ll eventually be able to be used with PC and emulators by the time the Switch N64 support is phased out.

    • You've been able to use these with pc almost since release. Originally via Bluetooth only, but looks like that has changed

      • You're right! I remember at launch there were people who had issues but Googling seems to indicate it works now. Sweet!

  • +1

If you're looking for stuff to buy to bring it up to $80 and get free postage, I bought an HDMI cable last time.

Nintendo brand HDMI cables are a lot better quality than most.

    • +1

I literally just need an HDMI cable for my laptop to my monitor, saw my nintendo one and thought 'no way am I risking this good quality one'

  • +1

Thanks for heads up. Just purchased 4.
    1997, here I come!

  • Wish MS would release a 64 controller in conjunction with Nintendo

    • I'm actually looking forward to trying it with dual stick support… I suspect going back to the old style of moving and then R to do a more precise aim will be hard to get used to again.

      • Perfect dark had the same issue , you just got to get used to it thats all

    • I use a Brawler64 Gamepad. Just got the new Switch edition. runs Bluetooth and connects to PC no issues. Can also swap x-input and D-input.

  • Got one

  • +1

I don't have a subscription, and I was able to buy one.
I used to have one, but not currently active, I also checked my account, and it is showing as "No Membership".

    • Same happened with me

  • +1

    Got 2 thanks.

  • +2

It seems it just let me buy the controllers with no active subscription. I made a Nintendo account and then was able to purchase the controllers. I never signed up to any subscription membership.

Money has come out of my account. Not sure if they will be sent out

Edit: it is saying that it has been completed in 'my orders' tab. Seems you don't need the membership.

    • Exact same for me, hopefully they send them.
Such a jerk move hiding hardware behind a subscription paywall otherwise

      • +2

They're now behind a subscription wall.

        • As in Nintendo just updated it?
Mine and others just purchased 20 minutes ago without subscription
Edit, I see they closed the loop. D1ck move but unsurprising from Nintendo

          • @cook99: Yep. Mistake fixed. Let's see if they cancel orders

      • +1

Well, they are for games you need the NSO membership to use…..

Given the shortages and demand I'm not surprised.

        • They work on games not on NSO too…

    • -1

Seems they have removed the loop hole. Just went to purchase 2x more controllers (on top of the previous 2) and it is saying that I now need the membership to proceed.

      • -1

Oh that sucks, let's hope they don't block our first purchases…

        • Yeah, I'm interested to know. I'm hoping it's more effort to cancel our orders than it's worth for them.

          • -4

@ninnypoop: Mine just got cancelled due to no membership… Crappy Nintendo continues to be crappy company.
Would have happily signed up for a membership to purchase had they asked rather than straight cancel. Oh well

            • @cook99: Lol at negs from the Fanbois 🤣

            • @cook99: Just received my refund email. They didn't state the reason for refunding but I'm guessing it's cause of the non-membership.

              • @ninnypoop: Same here, I even sent an email asking could I join and not have order cancelled. They replied with the same copy paste … You're order is ineligible…. Shame, I would have signed up for membership to make purchase but big N can let me keep my money I guess

  • +1

Is there a way to use these with the OG N64?

Edit: yes they can, but with some rumble issues, and have to buy adaptor. See: https://youtu.be/Pt0nLlfek_w?t=99

    Thanks OP, bought 4

  • +4

Got 4 thanks OP. Have to think of the future. 1 for me, 1 for wife, 1 for 2 years old, 1 for 15 days old.

    • +4

      Congrats on the new bub

  • There was an issue processing your transaction. Contact your card issuer or select a different payment option."

I've tried ALL my cards, and two separate accounts in my Nintendo eshop family membership.
    This sucks!
Can someone buy 4 for me? I will add them to my family account.

    • You have a subscription to NSO?

      • Looks like it was out of stock, but product page was still updating.

        • It could have been………BUT i had this issue trying to buy before and just ignored it and gave up.
(profanity) i hate payment systems so much.

  • OOS :(

  • That didn't last long. Gone in ~30min.

    • Wow hopefully it wasn't just all scalpers :(

      • +2

I wouldn't be surprised, since you didn't need a NSO Account to purchase (until they fixed the loophole).

    • I’m so pissed. I was there at 1pm AEDT and it kept showing no stock. And then I checked an hour later and they were sold out. Sigh.

  • thank you OP.!!! 😁👌👌

  • Showing out of stock already

  • +1

    Never enough, never ever enough

  • Can Golden Eye be played with normal switch controllers?

    • +3

Any normal switch controller works with it.

      • Awesome thanks! then curious to know why people going nuts for these?

        • Nostalgia + they're always out of stock so the ebay price is $200

          • +1

@ItsMeAgro: Cool yeah I get it. Would you say the pro controller is better?

            • +1

@Mahalo: Pro controller is definitely better as it has more features like X & Y buttons, shoulder buttons, minus button, nfc, hd rumble and gyro aiming

Only reason to get this is because you want to play n64 games with its original controller or nostalgia or overcompensating for a childhood as their friends made them watch while they play while never sharing (me)

              • @azngamer: Yes I remember watching while my friends played, because I didn’t have a Nintendo I always played on my turn and lost straight away👾. My kids are spoiled though.

              • +2

@azngamer: Another plus for literally any other controller is that it also doesn't expect you to have three hands.

  • OOS in under an hour. Ouch

  • Damn, missed it. Curse my long lunch.

  • +1

All these people buying 4 controllers I’m just trying to get the 1 😞

  • +1

Flippers are already listing. "Available for pickup when it arrives"

    • +3

Wow, there are listings like "Nintendo Switch N64 Controller - DISPATCH 3/2/2023."

      :-/

People don't even wait to have the items in their hand before they scalp.

      • +5

Just report every listing you see as a scam

        • Lol

        • +4

          Downvoted by the scum scalpers

          • +1

@youfnc: I don't think you can report people reselling as scammers out of spite and expect ebay to delete listings…

            • +4

@2pro4sho: Preorders/presales are actually not allowed on eBay.
              1: Find a listing
2: Scroll down to the small "Report item" link. It is just above the detailed description field. (control+F is your friend if you cannot find it)
3: Under "Report Category" select "Listing Practices"
4: Under "Reason for Report" select "Inappropriate seller terms"
5: Under "Detailed Reason" select "Presale"
              6: Click "Submit"

              • +1

@StaticzAvenger: That's actually not true. "Presale listings must guarantee that the item will be posted within 20 days of purchase". These are due to be posted this week.

                https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/listing-policies/presa…

                • -1

@2pro4sho: Tons of PlayStation VR2 headsets at exorbitant prices on presale on eBay and has been for months.

It’s still more than 20 days from release

                  • @proudwanderer: What you on about? Yes you can report those but not these hence the policy I linked

                    • +1

@2pro4sho: Oh I was just trying to point out that whilst the policy is 20 days, there are tons of people “violating” the policy - PSVR2 being one prime example. Just a little more than 20 days from release now, but I’ve seen them listed for many months at ridiculous prices.

Yes I have reported them - not sure if eBay does anything though.

              • @StaticzAvenger: Sorry but you are factually incorrect with your advice, hate scalpers or not; presales are allowed on eBay.

    • +6

Loads of people with NSO who legit wants to play n64 games on switch are still trying to get their hands on this controller.

That's why I think it should be locked behind a subscription wall until stock issues resolves

  • -1

I bought they new DualSense Edge (it’s amazing). I don’t have any money left for this controller.

    • +2

I won't be personally spending $300+ for a PS5 controller. Pre-orders never were exhausted so I bet they will quickly reduce in price, then I might pull the trigger (pun intended)

  • done a bit of research.. can someone tell me why would ppl pay over the odds for this instead of going for sth like 8bitdo which does the same and looks better?
