Wusthof Classic Cook's Knife 20cm with Bonus Beechwood Block $99.95 (In-store Only, Online Sold Out) @ Minimax

230

Credit to @N1ghthawk's comment from the David Jones deal. This one comes with a free beechwood block. Many Ozbargainers would prefer to go with a Victorinox, myself included, but there's no arguing that this is a great knife and a decent price. Enjoy!

Is there a difference between a chef’s knife in the other deal vs this?

    • Classic vs trident. Unfortunately minimax doesn't show what metal or hardness it is

      • -1

This deal? It was also Classic, but yes unfortunately we can't see the metal or hardness on the minimax site.

        • They're different, both chef knives but one is classic while the other is Trident series.
Not sure what the differences are though, both have the same hardness level.

@SirNoble: I'm not sure what this Wusthof trident is? Both are listed as Wusthof classic. From what I understand, Wusthof Trident is just the company name in English:

Wüsthof (also known as Wüsthof Dreizackwerk (German) and Wüsthof Trident (English); sometimes spelled Wusthof or Wuesthof) is a knife-maker based in Solingen, Germany.

            • @Soapdroid: Maybe, the etching on the blade is different in the image. If they had part numbers it would make comparisons much easier

              • @brocky2006: This one isnt it?
David jones and myer used to sell the exact combo 1-2 years ago, I didnt buy at time because it was expensive ( can’t recall the price, but definetly not $99)

  • Wusthof have at least 7 different grades of knives.
Classic/Classic ikon being entry level X50CrMoV15 forged blades.
Gourmet/Pro are the higher end stamped blades.

Classic/Classic ikon a perfectly fine for everyday use and a massive step up from baccarat basement.

Sweet spot is the Gourmet if you come across them on special.

Trident refers to the old logo from memory..

I think your comment is technically correct but it might be a little misleading in implying gourmet is somehow better than Classic.

Definitely go for classic, full tang and forged make a big difference. This deal is great. I paid over 200 just for the knife just at Christmas.

      • +1

Definitely agree, classic is an excellent knife.

To clarify.. I have no idea about the difference in quality between the range, that just seems to be the way they market/price the range.

Mine are 20 years + of daily usage and still going strong.

        • +4

Im not an expert between the ranges, but forged vs stamped is a huge difference.

Stamped is basically very cheap and in no way a premium knife.

          • @BlueJay87: Probably explains why the Gourmet sets can be had for around $200 on special…

            • @randomusername2017: Wusthof Gourmet Cooks Knife, 20 cm $118.64 on Amazon AU including free standard shipping at time of posting.

The 7 piece Gourmet set only includes the 15 cm chef's knife.

              • @Levene: My mistake.. haven't actually used the Gourmet.
It's the Grand prix in the home kitchen - good knives purchased on special a few years back.

                • @randomusername2017: Hi Random,
No worries. Just letting people know they won't get the 20cm cooks knife if they purchase the 7 piece Goumet Set which sells on special for the prices you mention.

          • @BlueJay87: Stamped knives are used by Chefs because they are lightweight and can be used for a prolonged time.

            • @darshu: Didn't know that. Guess everything has its advantages.

The wustholf is heavy. Perhaps to heavy for some, but I love the feel. Forged better for edge retention and sharpening too

    • if people like high end stuff, WÜSTHOF Amici 1814 is THE knife you buy

    • Gourmet is the cheaper version lower quality

    • Gourmet are the lower end line, the classic is the main blade, with the ikon being similar to the classic with a modern design. The Grand Prix was a little softer than classics. The 1814 series is the premium range. There are a few other series but I don’t know anything about them. The classics are a mainstay in many kitchens the world over, durable, comfortable and a step above global, Victorinox, zwilling etc.

This size, blade and handle will remain useful for a lifetime and longer.

Big fan of the Classic Ikon personally, was a nice step up from my Mundial set, easy to keep in good condition with the included steel that came with my set. Probably not pro level but very serviceable for everyday use

I got the Wüsthof Classic Ikon Crème Cook's Knife (20cm) a few years ago and can't recommend it enough. It is on the heavy side, but nothing too crazy. Great workhorse for heavy veggies and fruits when you want some more weight.

I use a Global fluted Santoku as my other knife as being a bit lighter it is easier to work with for a longer period of time. Have had it foe about 15 years and still going strong.

You won't be disappointed by one of these knives. Just keep it sharp and honed, and look for a good local sharpener to resharpen every 12-18 months for you and it will last forever.

    • Honest question. If you are sharpening and honing regularly… Why the need for the pro sharpener every 12-18?

      • +1

I am only using a sharpening and honing rod, and not a wet stone for full sharpening.
Have an amazing knife sharpener locally that only charges about $20 per knife. Brings it back to sharper than new, and better than I ever could.
        Money well spent.

  • Thank you, got it for a friends bday

Anyone know how fast they are with delivery?

    • +1

You aren't usually allowed to give knives as presents, he/she has to give you some money back to fix the issue.
