How is an extension until 31 February possible when there are max 29 days in February?

    • +3

I’m on gold and my review date is still 28 Feb 2023. How do I go about extending it for another year?

      • Interested to know too. My review date is not until end of June but I see no way to earn 380 SCs until then; an extension will really help.

Edit: Return flight for Syd-BNE-CNS is just over$1K, netting 540SCs (2 x 2 x135SC). Can anyone confirm if my maths is correct? Seems too good.

        • Looks like it.

      • I think they mean from flying over the past year?

But I'd love to know too if there's a way to extend.

        • Only with the required status points by the review date.

      • You need enough status points by the review date. That's your only option unless you have gold or platinum with another airline.

My extension is until 28 Smarch 2023. Lousy Smarch weather.

  • +3

Hahaha I meant 28th Feb, I was looking at this month on my calendar 😂

  • +6

This is frustrating - have a whole bunch of travel booked for Feb / March on Virgin, but all booked prior to this promotion, so ineligible. Serves me right for being organised.

    • +22

And paying for cheaper fares by booking way ahead of time

  • +1

I'd also.like to know how to extend platinum beyond Feb 23?

    • Same with gold

    • +1

Fly enough to earn your 900 status credits to retain status, otherwise back to Gold you go.

  • What's the best way to use velocity points? I have 450k points! International flights seem a miss unless to USA?

    • +1

You can use them to fly Business Class on Singapore Airlines

    • They're arguably among the most flexible frequent flyer points out there. For example 450k will get you return to Europe in a Qatar Qsuite (best biz class in the world), plus a return biz class to Asia on Singapore Airlines.
      https://experience.velocityfrequentflyer.com/flying-status/a…

    • +1

You can use VFF with Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and Etihad. That's Europe, Asia and the Middle East covered.

    • best bang for your buck used to always be to use them on domestic Virgin flights.

      • +4

Domestic flights redemptions are worth about 1-2 cents per Velocity point whereas international flights will get you about 3-6 cents. It might have been different in previous years but my recent analysis of hundreds of flights shows international to be the clear winner in terms of value.

      • really not the case anymore though.

best is to use them on International J routes with Points + fees pay

example is MEL > AMS on QR J for 139k + $700 in fees. (thats airport taxes, fuel charges, etc)

I don’t know if I’m doing it right but I don’t see the double status credit offer in my app or on the webpage linked?

I'm currently silver with a bit to go to reach gold.

    • There are two apps. One called Virgin Australia and the other Velocity. Try "Velocity".

  • Gotta get another 211 SCs to maintain Platinum so might be time to book a J status run flight.

    • +1

What's a good status run with Virgin? Any tips? I'm ~250 credits away from Platinum, and after being closer last year (~100 away) had all but given up… but with double credits I feel like I've got another chance.

      • I am slowly figuring that out myself.

I'm looking at a status run for the first time as I'm likely going to leave my current travel heavy job before I meet the renewal requirements on the company dime. 2 years of extra benefits would be worth a bit of out of pocket spend IMO.

I might do a Business flight and then just use points to return if I can get all required SC in the one flight. Otherwise, multi-stop flights seem to often get recommended.

      • +1
        • they don’t seem to actually be flying any of the routes suggested there

      • +2

Depends where you are based. MEL-OOL in J gives 80SC ($320 using promo code), which is 160SC during DSC.
MEL-SYD-OOL in J gives 110SC ($442 using promo code), which is 220SC during DSC

        • I have noticed a lot of status runs have an OOL origin/destination. Is that because the taxes are better than BNE?

Also which promo code are you referring to?

          • @daanish: you want as many transfers as possible to maximise SC so setting to OOL would probably help with this

          • +2

@daanish: It is a quirk, where if you try to book MEL-BNE, it will only give you the direct flight J fares. For instance if you try to do MEL-SYD-BNE, it will basically add the MEL-SYD fare with the SYD-BNE fare. However for OOL, it lets you book MEL-SYD-OOL at a reasonably difference over the direct MEL-OOL flight.

If you are based in SYD, I think SYD-MEL-ADL might be worth considering.

The promo codes keep changing but you can refer to them here: https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/virgin-australia-…

            • @triplea: Ah ok. That explains a fair bit of why I keep seeing OOL appear in status runs. I'm based in Brisbane so I could probably do a day trip down to OOL.

              • @daanish: BNE-SYD-CBR might work too at a reasonable cost

              • @daanish: "so youre booking BNE > OOL… via Sydney?"

                • @TexasVujicic: Haha no - I'd just drive down to the coast and do OOL-SYD-MEL and then return back to OOL and pick up my car.

Maybe if I catch a ride to OOL with my sister on her way to the beach I could do MEL-BNE on the return leg as a rewards fare and come home directly. Would just need to ensure I accrue enough credits flying down to MEL.

Possibly targeted. I’m plat and have already qualified for plat again and it’s not showing for me. Perhaps targeted to those who have not yet hit the mark?

    • I'm gold and haven't quite retained (need another 100 points by may) and I can't see this offer anywhere.

    • Check the velocity phone app. I wasn't seeing it via the web either and I'm velocity plat and already requalified, but it is showing in the "featured offers" and was able to be activated by the app.

  • Anyone know if this counts for already booked flights? I'm flying in the next few days, would be a nice little boost :)

    • It seems the consensus across various forums is that already booked flights won't count. I'm flying later today though, so hopefully it does.

      • +2

Won't count unless you cancel and rebook.

  • +2

    Not seeing this either.

  • +3

I saw it in the Velocity app, not in the webpage. I cancelled a few Feb flights and rebooked them, fares were the same.

    • Did you check via a search first if they would be the same price? I have a J flight booked in a couple of weeks but I paid $300 and search is now showing $560, wondering if by cancelling it will drop that price back into the pool.

      • +2

I checked the price of the flight first before cancelling anything, and it was the same. This worked with a couple of flights with low demand, but some other flights were more expensive so I didn't cancel them. I guess it depends on how many seats are still available.

    • doesnt it cost at least $80 to cancel and rebook?

      • Probably booked Flex or Business

  • Thanks OP. Have some Flex flights next week which I can cancel and rebook for the same price. 50 credits off retaining Plat.

  • -1

Thank you, I did find it in the App!

  • +1

travel by 31 march 2023 is a killer

  • -1

Saw it. In time for my business trip!!

  • +1

Any thoughts on if qantas will do the same anytime soon?

  • Thats insane. 160 status credits for ~$400. I only need 195 to hit platinum

    • +1

Would you mind tell me the flight that give this much status credits for around $400?

      • +2

Mel - ool and ool - mel both have $450 business fares which discount to $420 with affiliate promo code

        • legend!!!

        • What are the dates you looked at? I cant find any of them, might have all been snatched by now :(

  • Super annoying, chasing status and i booked 5 flights for February a week ago

    • If they're Flex or Business check there's been no significant price change between what you booked and now and if similar, cancel original flights and rebook under the promo.

      • All choice fares, aint paying $80 to change

        • you mustn’t be chasing status real hard then

  • Just booked a Business class flight before activating the promo and also forgot to checkout with Cashrewards. I think it's time to hand in my OzBargain license…

    • +3

It's business class so just cancel it and rebook.

  • Does anyone know if using a promo code would void this promotion?
