Cheapest I have ever seen it and the historical low according to 3x camels.
Saw it hovering around $158 for awhile which shows on 3x camels.
Ignore the crossed out $249 RRP, it's currently $199 retail at Sony AU.

TLDR:
+ Good sound but a little boomy with bass, good battery life.
- Not much L/R separation, volume doesn't get extremely loud and compression at high volume.

This is the local Australian model and Amazon AU stock.
Released in July 2022 last year so quite a new model.
Might look big in the pictures but it's about as big as your typical cylindrical shape Bluetooth speaker, 24cm tall and 12x12cm in thickness.

It is a front firing speaker design, like Anker/JBL models. Not 360 degree speaker design like UE Boom models.

Scathing review complains of "muffled sound" but YMMV. Not sure if it's a case of user error (Ambient sound sensing mode on?) or Sony over did the waterproofing/dustproofing but it pretty much maxes out on the IP scale which might be the cause of muffled sound. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0201/8228/files/IP_rating_…

As a comparison a bluetooth speaker of similar dimensions that I have is IP55. And while it's not "super clear" in sound (pretty normal for bluetooth TBH) I definitely wouldn't call it sounding muffled.

Specs:

  • 16 hour battery life (With in App Battery care mode, which reduces battery life slightly but increases the number of charge cycles for the battery's lifetime by only charging to 90%)
  • Bluetooth 5.2 (Supported codecs: SBC, AAC, LDAC)
  • Weight: 800g
  • Speakers : Two Full Range 42mm x 51mm, Dual passive radiators
  • USB-C charging port (quick charge function allows 70 minutes Play from 10 minutes Charge)
  • Sony Music Centre App (control EQ, STAMINA mode, Battery saver mode etc)
  • Microphone w/ echo cancelling technology
  • Party Connect (you can combine up to 100 compatible wireless speakers with BLUETOOTH technology)
  • Line shaped diffuser distributes music evenly (Inspired by the audio systems used at professional concert, *in vertical position distributes the sound energy evenly, across a wide sound front, to better fill your space with audio.)

*Sony recommends you only charge it with a 5V/1.5A output or higher USB charger. Using a slower charger may lead to overheating and damaging the speaker (also happened to one of my bluetooth speakers when I accidentally charged it for 10 mins with a slow charger the speaker got hot to touch).

  • the one review on Amazon gives it a 1 star

    • Not sure why. It's a pretty decent speaker all round.

Yeah I mentioned it in the post as "Scathing".

That's exactly what it is though, the only 1 review. A pool of 1 out of 1 lol.

      • True - checked other reviews on other sites and they are much better

        • Honestly you have to take some Amazon reviews with a grain of salt.

Maybe that user didn't mention they dropped it right out of the box and damaged it?
Maybe they didn't read the user manual and some settings are "On" by default such as STAMINA mode or Ambient sound sensing mode that affect the sound. Or maybe they triggered those Modes in the App by touching the screen and have no idea how to fix it because they haven't read the user manual.
Or maybe it is their first IP67 speaker, and Sony indeed did make it dust resistant so it sounds a bit muffled compared to a speaker that's not dustproof.

So many things could be the reason for their issue. But it seems like they gave up already because they say they "wish they didn't buy it".

          • @harshbdmmaster718:

some Amazon reviews with a grain of salt.

Can expand that to take the majority of any category of information with a grain of salt^

            • @UsernameChecksIn: Not sure why we are moving onto information. What's next? Take anything you read on google with a grain of salt? Take anything you hear from anyone with a grain of salt? I am just talking about reviews.

I mean it applies here more because it's the only 1 review.

For example if you saw the same single review among 90% 4 and 5 star reviews, it would have a different effect.

              • @harshbdmmaster718: Keeping perspective open that there can be shortfalls in more than a review

Can add qualifiers and context to many views 💁

Simply thought it was interesting to drill down on many potentials that ended up longer than the throwaway rating

@UsernameChecksIn: "Simply thought it was interesting to drill down on many potentials."

Yeah just wanted to point out there are a lot of dumb consumers out there (me being one of them) that can write negative reviews like that.
Maybe I could have just wrote that sentence above, but it sounded a little harsh so I tried to write out possibilities instead.
                  That's all they are "maybe's".

As others have stated, overall the speaker is well reviewed.

Gawd I might buy it just because they've moved to USB-C charging

Such a weird button placement though. Why is it on the BACK of the speaker and not facing the frontways?

    • Maybe most of those function can be controlled with the App?

      • Probably, but still why not have the buttons at the front… Everything these days is aesthetic over function and it sucks

        • +1

Where there are buttons there can't be speakers. So if you want good front facing speakers filling the front face, buttons must go elsewhere. I guess?
