I heard it's best not to get 2 from same batch in case of factory defect it doesn't fail together.

It's best not to buy loose drives from amazon, they will be DOA most likely.

      • Yep, manufacturing tolerance are so tight that this is likey to happen when they are sequential numbers… they wear at the same rate. As they are so similar they are more likley to fail during rebuild.

      • Seeing that there are a few neg voters and a reply with just "lol", I was hoping for someone to explain why that is wrong so I can learn.

      • You need backups anyway so it doesn't really matter if 2 drives fail together.

There are a billion ways to lose your data, and your backups need to cover the basics like your NAS power supply failing and frying all your drives (so all your drives are gone at the same time, and so is your NAS).

2 drives failing together should be a trivial scenario for your backups to deal with 👍

Can add this $8 book to the "buy 2, save 5%" bundle:
      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/0892760524

Total price for the 18TB would be $446.58 ~ about $24.8 per TB.

  • I am looking to get purple Pros, would there be any disavantage to using the gold instead ?
