I do not think those $60 individual tax return is targeted at typical OzBargainers that have simple tax affair and are able to download the eTax software from ATO and get everything done under an hour (especially these days ATO pre-filled almost everything). There might be still a lot of people going to newsagency picking up their tax form and try to copy over figures from their payment summary — I have no idea.
If your tax is more complicated, then yes don't cheap out and find a proper accountant because what you get is more than just professional services but good advice as well.

It depends, Scotty. It costs money to get a new client. When I was working at itp back in those days, we were told that it cost $90 to get a new client (not sure how true it was!!), again when I was working for large CA firm, we were told that it cost at least few hundreds to few thousand dollars to get a new client!!
In my opinion, it really depends on what the firm's goal is!! To get quick cash during the tax season or to build up client base quickly!!!

Pretty much. Some firm will hire uni students on $20-30 an hour (if that much), complete the tax return using a software (forgot what it is, some may even go as dodgy as using e-Tax…) and assuming Spreets take a 30% cut out of it, $42 inc GST goes to the tax agent which means they're still in front for most of the tax returns. Small margin but it's still a margin nonetheless.

@scotty
I don't agree that paying more = better service/quality, esp when it comes to doctors/lawyers/accountants. Paying less doesn't mean you always get crap service either.if you are someone who have complex finances (eg, someone with own business + investment property + stocks + foreign stocks ), chances are, you are using your own accountant already. No one in their right mind in this situation would go to a $60 spreet accountant would they?

@scotty.
on the same note, i can only speak for myself. I used to use e-filing. I got $X returns, and when i used a H&R block accountant (as you know, they are the not-so-cheap+nasty ones), i was made aware I can have more deductions.
I got $X+2000+2000(spouse offset) back. This is an individual tax return.make of it what you will.
What I'm saying, a lot of people think they are smart enough to know everything, but it's not always the case. The taxation system in this country is complex. Sometimes even a $60 service can make a big difference.
the money you spent on an accountant could be the best dollar you ever spent in that financial year.
