What Could Cause an Intermittent Cigarette-Smoke-Like Smell?

Hi OzBers, have really not been sure how to tackle this so any input is appreciated.

Some background:
House is a 2-storey terrace, shared walls both sides, a few years old. The affected rooms are at the front of the house, an upstairs bedroom (at least one window usually open) and hallway/laundry beneath it (not usually ventilated unless we leave the front door open, there's a little ventilation fan in the ceiling).

I first noticed the smell in the walk-in wardrobe off the bedroom, opposite the window and where the manhole to the roof area happens to be. The smell was very concentrated in the WIR but it was difficult to pinpoint a source, and there wasn't really any smell in the bedroom itself or near the windows. Since then we've been smelling it downstairs as well as in the bedroom's ensuite, but can never tell where exactly it's coming from. It started out intermittent but lately I think it's pretty constant downstairs, maybe since it's less ventilated there. I also did once smell it outside the front of the house.

It's not a burning smell, more like stale cigarette smoke or as my partner describes it, a dirty bong or ash that's been sitting in water.

We did recently have mould start to develop in the grout in that ensuite shower. Could this be indicative of something like a leak and if so, could that be the cause?

Other theories:

  • Smoke coming through the ceiling from neighbours on the side nearest the manhole. They say no-one there smokes but that someone behind us does. We don't smell anything from the backyard though
  • Smoke from someone standing or walking past the front of the house. Happens a bit too often and at odd times for that IMO, plus it happens even with windows closed
  • Dirty drains. I've been putting some cleaning product in them but no noticeable difference yet.
  • Something else with the wiring or our pipes??

i would say either it is a smoking ghost or your teenager is smoking while in the shower and blowing it in the exhaust fan

Lol my first thought was someone was having a sneaky smoke in the house too

This might be the only time I ever say this but I wish I had a teenager, if only the answer was that simple!

But if you don't have a teenager… and you don't smoke.. and i don't smoke…and we're both here at the same time.. you don't think that…no it couldn't be…. could it…? if only there was someone who you could call… but who…? who would you call..?

        • Hmmmmm there’s something weird here and it doesn’t look good

@Gunnar: Guy living in the wall or crawl space…that all those movies warned us about.

  • No idea. But if it was cigarette smoke, you'd know it and would not be confusing it for mould or something else.

  • Have you watched "Phrogging: Hider in My House"?

  • Smoke can get drafted into the building. They might be smoking near a vent etc.

Can even be clothing with smoke in it going through the dryer. Or brought into a house and dumped in a laundry waiting to be washed.

As cig smoke is gross it doesnt take much to be offensive.

  • my partner describes it, a dirty bong or ash that's been sitting in water.

Probably someone vaping nearby and they made a 420 juice mixture

  • As someone who had a couple of sneaky ciggies in my bathroom when i was younger (blowing out the window and had the exhaust on). Check the kids.

Cigarette smoke is very distinct. If you think it is, it is. It wont be mistaken for mould or a burning pipe etc.

  • Instant gas hws?

    • Forgot to mention we don’t have gas

      • Alarm box in robe?

        • Yes actually, I checked it previously and didn’t see anything obviously wrong. Anything in particular I should look for?

  • someone smoking

  • Maybe a clothes dryer getting a bit too hot. Whenever I smell smoke inside it's usually the dryer. I would complain but I think the landlord is secretly hoping the house burns down.

  • Could be a dry sewer trap. Turn on every tap for 1 minute including bath and laundry tub. Tip water down floor drain.

    • Thanks, I’ll give that a try

  • I get occasional whiff coming through the evaporative system every now and then

My daughter bought a townhouse from a smoker. The cigarette smoke had infused itself on to the painted walls. At times the smell was worse than other times. You could tell the smell was coming from the wall as if you sniffed close to the wall the smell was intense. We washed all the walls with the cheapest vinegar from the supermarket. The place smelt like a fish and chip shop for a couple of days. After that the smell was gone.

  • draft coming in through a chimney?

  • My first house had a bedroom where the mum of the previous owners used to smoke. It had an intermittent smoke smell (sometimes more noticeable) until we changed the carpet out. Scrubbing the walls with sugar soap and repainting the room didn't work.

  • A tumor.
