What Retro Gaming Handheld Do You Have?

Been on a bit of a retro hit lately since Nintendo added Gameboy games to NSO.

Pretty interested in getting a nifty handheld to play some more classics, what do you guys have/recommend?

N64/PSP would be nice but not super necessary.

Gutted I missed the Miyoo Mini deals from late last year, those looked good.

original gameboy, I played sooo much tetris
    .

    • +4

Ah, so you would know the pain of watching that red light and the screen dim before the thing ran out of batteries just when you were doing so well.

      • +2

Was using rechargeables that took half a day to charge as well. 12v cigarette adapter was good in the car
        .

    • Timeless classic!

  • I got rid of all my handhelds when Iw as a teenager, sadly. I bought a miyoo mini but my heart isn't really in it. I'd like an analogue pocket, but I don't think even that has RTC for roms loaded off SD card. I should just be happy with Miyo Mini, analogue pocket won't magically make me happy. I think an N64 with flash cart and HDMI mod would make me happy though.

    • How do you find the Miyoo Mini size? Was worried it might be a bit too small and easy to cramp your hands.

      • +1

I think it's fine. I have big enough hands. I'm sure the L and R button would be hard to use but I bought it for GB/C/A games so that didn't bother me. The Miyoo Mini is almost exactly the same size as a deck of playing cards for reference.

        • Thanks for the comparison, glad to hear it doesn't cramp up your hands.

I might pick one up when it's back in stock. Saw some deals for around $87 or something but OOS everywhere or pay a premium on eBay :(

          • @mangobango: I just got mine from eBay. I wanted the v2 with the better laminated display. I'm not sure if my display is the better one, it's hard to tell, but it's good enough. It came preloaded with all games and stuff but I formatted the SD and used a better launcher.

            • @AustriaBargain: Ah okay nice, I'll keep an eye out on eBay if they have any decent prices. Thanks for the heads up, forgot there was a V2.

              • @mangobango: The v2 came out so long ago that all stock these days is probably v2. There are some claiming there's a v3, but I think it's just a v2 with a clear plastic shell.

                • @AustriaBargain: Yeah I saw a lot of listings say both V2 and V3 but you're right it's probably just the clear shell.

Also side note I messaged the Miyoo store on AliExpress, they said the Mini won't be back in stock for a short while but the Mini Plus will be dropping March 5th so I might grab one of those! Hopefully the price isn't too much more expensive.

351mp, but that’s dead to me now I have steam deck haha

    • +1

I'm jealous of the steam deck. ;)

  • +2

I still have my Pikachu Gameboy color, my gba, my gba sp, my ds & my 3dsxl.
My save data is still on the cartidges, so not willing to get rid of them even though I haven't played any of them for like 3 years.

    • +1

Nothing like playing on the actual hardware!

I modded my GBA screen and replaced it with an LCD one, started messing around with it the other day, really love the form factor of it.

    • +1

Marry me, so I can play with all your consoles.

  • Still have a dsi, with 'expansion cartridge' ;)

Also have the Mario Bros game and watch still in the box. Impulse buy which I haven't even used yet lol

    • +2

      dsi

The year is 2069, world war and zombie outbreak mean the world is down to the last survivors, fighting to survive.

You open your dsi from 2009…last charged 2012.

      Battery: : still 69%

      Nice

  • Switch with sub for all old gen titles, N64, SNES, NES, havnt tried the gameboy ones yet.

  • psp/psgo or a 3ds, you can pretty much soft mod these console to run homebrew.

3ds: Interesting part of 3ds is that it can emulate psx games. massive backlog of games

pspgo: small form fgactor, you can connect a ds3 controller and output to a tv. Play your games on a large tv with a ds3.

psp: same as pspgo without the blutooth options.

    • Yeah I've got my 3DS which has been soft modded, very nifty kit. Didn't know it could emulate PS1 so I'll need to check that out. Thanks!

A modded/hacked VITA and N3DS are great to have if you want to play some emulated games on high quality handheld hardware, skip the original games as they can get too expensive (or only buy a limited number of favourites).

A Sony VITA plays the PSX, PSP and VITA back catalogue and more.

A Nintendo N3DS plays the NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, DS and (N)3DS back catalogue and more.

I have both and play them often on the cough when wife is using the TV.
Currently playing FFVII on VISTA and FE6 on 3DS (back and forth as I get the urge and free time), life's good.

  • Nintendo DS Lite and also 3DS if that counts as retro now
Had a silver GameBoy Advance SP which I regret selling

    • I was almost going to buy a second hand SP, but all the ones on marketplace were scratched up to no end 😂

I've still got my OG GBA but always wanted an SP.

  • +1

I have a Retroid Pocket 3 and highly recommend it!
Plays up to N64/Dreamcast/PSP, although I mainly use it for PS1, SNES etc. Also works well streaming PS4 at home, haven't tried that out and about though.

Apparently the 3+ (which was released a week after my 3 was delivered) can play a good proportion of the PS2 library as well.

    • +1

Keep seeing that one being mentioned, a touch expenny but hopefully it pops up on sale soon, looks like a great device!

  • A couple of GBC's and my childhood N64 still going strong.

  • +2

Don't have the handheld (never did actually), but I use a gameboy emulator to play Pokemon Leaf Green through every year or so.

  • Have a 3ds xl and psp somewhere…

Edit: does my old Nokia count? For snake ….

  • +2

The Sony PSP was ahead of its time.

    • +1

to think it started off with a packed with a 16gb duo card to being able to run 256gb cards at the end of it's lifetime is insane.

  • +1

I had two Game 'n' Watches (Oil Panic and Donkey Kong Jr.) and a Tomy Turnin' Turbo.

    • I had about 10 Game and watch devices, and they were all thrown out bar 1. Donkey Jong JR.

I also had some Coleco Mini Arcades - Pacman + Donkey Kong

I still have my Atari 2600 from 1980. I just need a PSU, RF Convertor and to borrow a Sony Trinitron off @jv. I still have @ 10 cartridges, 1 original joystick and 1 'SpectraVideo'. I had about 30 cartridges in all and gave most of them to a friend of mine when my parents bought me an Apple ][e. I wish I still had the paddles.

      The TTT looks great.

      • I think my 1st was Fire Attack. Then Donkey Kong, The others I had were Snoopy Tennis, Oil Panic, Green House, Donkey Kong 2?, Donkey Kong Jr.
There may have been others, as my friend had a heap, so we would swap etc.

      • Best I have is the 32x expansion for the mega drive. Worth more than the damn console itself lol

        • If only we knew these things, how much they would be worth…. I look at Timpo Soldiers for example. Worth massive $ in mint condition. I had heaps of figures of various types. Hornsby trains, Scalectric, Airfix, Esci,Star Wars, Battlestar galactica, Buck Rogers, GI Joe, Action Man, Big Jim, Planet of the Apes, Six million dollar man, Evel Knievel. My cousin had similar but he had a Hugo Doll .

          • @BewareOfThe Dog: I still have an older Bathurst Scalextric set, dunno what it's worth. Have tried looking it up before but couldn't find it. Has a 05 brocky commodore as part of the set. Actually, think it might be this set (it's at my folks house). That's like the only example I can find of it though

  • Snoopy tennis !
    Snoopy Snoop Snoop.

      Oh yes, this.

bip bip bip bip di bip bip bip bip

  • My $40 PSP street from the Kmart clearance many years ago serves me well in this area. The entire Master System, Mega Drive, SNES and Capcom CPS catalogue on the go with me. And so many wonderful PSP games… Great racing game catalogue.

  • +1

    I've got a Game Gear.

  • +1

I had a GBA SP, new 3DS XL and basically one of every Pokémon game from Gen 3 onwards.

Last year I sold them on eBay for about 4x I paid for them, probably made over 2 grand…. Used it to buy a steam deck to just emulate those games. I probably should have kept them but I just wanted them all gone, they were cluttering up the house

I will warn you, for legit handhelds and their games, they’re going for a lot more than they did a couple years ago.
I’d recommend looking into one of those retro emulating machines, personally.

    • I’d recommend looking into one of those retro emulating machines, personally.

Yeah that's what I more so was referring to, someone mentioned before about the Miyoo Mini which I was eyeing off but it's OOS. Though the official store on AliE says the Plus will be out March 5th (bit bigger screen/form factor, meant to be only $5 USD more expensive) so I'll be keeping an eye on that.

      • +1

Might I suggest starting here? I came across this video a few weeks ago and enjoyed it, I didn’t realise there were so many different styles of handheld. Maybe there may be one for you!

        https://youtu.be/hqAM3INcLeA

        • +1

Thanks for the vid, just went through it now and I want all of them 😆

I'll probably still go with a Miyoo though, seems best for what I want, and for more powerful consoles I can just emulate them on my phone with a Bluetooth controller.

More so want something with that Gameboy feel so the Miyoo should serve that perfectly, especially once the Plus is out.

        • after watching this video I ordered an ambernic rg35xx from aliexpress. Time for a new handheld!!
I'm so easily convinced it will be interesting doing jury duty next month…

  • I just bought the Anbernic RG353V, but they make all sorts of different models. They play any games you can imagine. From Atari to ps2

  • Modded switch

    • How do you mod a switch out of interest?

      • +1

You need one of the very early versions, you buy a shim basically to get it into a recovery mode and load custom firmware. It is a bit of a process, quite similar to loading a custom ROM on your android

  • Started collecting older Nintendo games/consoles when COVID first hit. Have ended up with the following:

    3 x Gameboy Colour
    3 x Gameboy Advance SP
    1 x Gameboy Micro
    3 x DS Lite
    1 x 3DS original
    1 x 2DS (slab form)
    1 x New 3DS XL
    1 x Switch

The 3DS XL is the one that I use most. It's excellent for emulating older Nintendo games and very simple to install Homebrew etc.

  • I have my daughters' Nintendo DS XL and 3DS XL here. They are still handy for car trips.

But to show my age, I have a MERLIN by Parker Brothers from the late 1970s: a big red phone shaped gaming device; It came with 6 games, all playable on a grid of off/flashing/solid red lights. Because of this post, I put in batteries and it still works. :-)

    Picture found online:
    https://img1.etsystatic.com/000/0/5281890/il_fullxfull.27023…

    • I still have that too. Lots of AAs.
Can probably still beat it at tic tac toe

  • I have a game park gp2x which I used to run classic arcades like elevator action etc. it still runs.

These days it’s easy to pickup android based ones on Ali X. But I see really exy ones too I don’t know what the deal is with them.

  • I still have my OG Gameboy, Gameboy Advance SP, DS Lite, DS XL and 3DS XL. Also OG PS1, Phat PS2 (with network/HDD adaptor), PS3 Slim, PS4, XBox 360, XBox One, One X and am using the Series X now. I did have the first XBox, but sold that one to a friend way back when it was still kinda useful.

I've also got the Retroflag GPi case with a Pi Zero @ for emulation, but really the 3DS XL can do most of that in a nicer form factor. I've considered upgrading it to the Pi Zero 2 W for a little more power, but don't use it now :P

I did build myself an Arcade machine a few years ago, but sold it on to free up some space.

  • all of them :P
i'm only missing the Gameboy Light to complete my Nintendo GB collection and 3 versions of the DS (New 2D, New 3DS and 3DS XL), otherwise i have all versions of Nintendo handhelds.
I have all the Nintendo consoles apart from the virtual boy, thats NES to Switch. 360, 360 elite, MD2, MegaCD2, PS5 and PSP, so long way to collect non Nintendo.

You can see them on my insta, fb and tiktok pages, @pdnsgaming

  • Anbernic 351p. Im hoping to save up for a retroid 3plus
