Are cats supposed to be indoors overnight? To protect wildlife?

    • +6

I do prefer they are indoors at night so that lessens them hunting the wildlife.

      • Prefer? Lessens?

Sheesh that's weak. Keep them inside. I do care about your cat but your cat is not the only animal that's important.

        • +4

What are you on about? They prefer their car indoors at night so it's not out slaughtering possums, birds, etc. The importance they are placing is on the safety of other wildlife, not their cat.

Sheesh, your reading comprehension is weak.

          • -3

            @NoApostrophePlurals: Prefer != keep

If they keep it in every night they should say they keep it in every night.

Your last sentence is a riot.

        • Did you not read the second part of the sentence properly?

so that lessens them hunting the wildlife.

          not

so that lessens wildlife hunting them.

          • -1

@CrispyChrispy: You're totally off track there. I read it correctly and have no idea how you could come up with that alternative.

            • -4

@justtoreply: I said prefer because unlike you i don't like telling people what to with their pets as some people see pets as part of the family. And for some telling them what to do with their pets is like telling them what to with their kids.

Cats just like other pets need to be let outside.

The upside of just letting a pet cat outside during the day only is other creatures are awake and aware that a cat is out and about as oppose to night time where lots of creatures are easy pickings for a house cat.

    • +5

And themselves. Average lifespan of a free roaming cat is 3 years as opposed to 12-18 years for indoor cats (US stats but dont think it matters)

      • How do the outdoors ones die in the US? Guessing many die to predators like mountain lions, coyotes, wolves, bears etc which isn't relevant to us.

        • +3

Maybe rat poison, cars and (profanity) that abuse animals

    • I keep them inside so psychos can't BB gun them.
Or get hit on the road.

      • +1

This pains me to hear thats theres these savages doing this to the poor cats.

        • bogans like to use crossbows and set their dogs on them, too.

      • Aren't BB guns illegal here? Where are they getting them from?

        • Some reason people are still managing to sneak them in the country.

        • +1

cocaine and meth are also illegal here but people can still buy

    • I used to let mine out the backyard, the fences are too high for him to jump up, and he's too scared to try to escape. He'd hang out for a few hours then knock on the door to come back in. But then once the neighbour cat jumped over and clawed him bad. After that he goes to the fence and makes a terrible noise fighting with the other cat. Now he's strictly inside cat because no fricking way am I spending time outside cat sitting him. He's gotten a little fatter but meh, no freaking way am I giving him uneven fractions of a can of cat food.

    • And themselves, and to be in line with the rules in a lot of council areas. Letting a cat roam is how you end up with an injured, lost, or dead cat.

Pretty sure this book has been written by a cat.

    • Reminds me of a TV Commercial 10yrs ago in the UK called "Cat's with opposable thumbs"

My dog saw me open this deal and slapped the phone out of my hand.

      Paw you

I nearly kicked him out of the house, but he renegotiated the terms of his leash.

        • +2

Well.. shouldn't have dogged them. Next time you use your phone to a cat, turn off collar ID

          • +1

@Bafranz: I tried to make up some kind of story of why I was looking at books about cats. He was having none of it, said my story was too.. far-fetched

    • +1

Your dog was telling you to scratch that idea.

      • Far-kennel! He really made if clear when he jumped onto the couch. It was sofa king obvious he doesn't like cats.

        • Now now. No need to barking mad. You made your point.

Thanks OP. Ordered! I don’t have a cat but if I ever get one this might be handy.

It’s important comments like this that make OzB worthwhile.

  • How many people are actually going to read this? Pretty close to spam

You don't really need a book. If you've ever had a cat, you know that the cat tells you what to do, rather than you trying to work it out

  • A book for domesti-cat-ing humans for the benefit of the cats.

  • Read the book, my quick synopsis : Pat and feed it.

  • Free in AU too!

    • Yes the link for the AU it's on the thumbnail image.

Can somebody tell me where to find one of these cats that kills wildlife? Every cat I have had has been COMPLETELY useless at catching anything.

Do people starve their cats or give them awful food to make them hunt?

I have a rat problem and they eat all my figs, passion fruit, plums, etc… I don't believe in poisoning and they don't fall for any of the humane traps I have.

The cat will literally just look at the rats eating the fruit.

In 35yrs experience with cats the ONLY thing they have caught is a couple of frogs and they've all been completely free, I don't gimp my friends… the dog btw will actually dig frogs up creating HUGE holes and then eat them or play with them.
