wreckedandjealous on 31/07/2012 - 14:49 ¶yeah, I was wondering the same thing…
need a new internal harddrive for my tv shows, and if I could do this, I think it would be my cheapest option
Of course they can be taken out. But if they fail, you may not be able to claim warranty.
Some of the drives inside are not "flagged" as OEM drives, and the warranty checker (working off the drive serial number) shows a normal retail warranty period. If that is the case, then you don't need a receipt etc, you just post it directly back to the HDD manufacturer.
But the 3TB WD that is in my Buffalo is a OEM drive with NO warranty via WD.

ryantan1121 on 31/07/2012 - 14:46 ¶I was once bought a Seagate 3TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache at $132 delivered from dealdirect last week.

Quite a pretty good price.Model is STAY3000300
ryantan1121 on 31/07/2012 - 16:24 ¶Its just FYI. What matters is the HDD inside, Seagate is a better brand and some ppl just ripped off the case just want to get the drive. A lot of ppl encountered problems with the USB 3.0 case. Not really portable, have software issue and require external power supply. I would prefer to buy the WD 1TB portable drive at $103 delivered from amazon which is much portable , easily plugged into USB and less likely to have software issue.
See here for few reviews regarding this 3TB buffalo drive: (2 out of 5 rated 1 star)

goblin5566 on 31/07/2012 - 15:31 ¶Thanks OP. I got one. You don't need the code as it is free shipping anyways.
Cheers
Does anyone know if the power management is implemented through hardware (and thus Operating System independent) , or some software driver/app?
I'm planning on connecting the device to a 24-7 powered Ubuntu-based apple tv, and would like the drive to spin down when not in use (this would drop power from 12 W to 2.2 W in power saving mode).

I have one of these Buffalos from the last Ozbargain deal. I haven't yet seen it spin down. I haven't checked properly, so I might go and plug it in an see.
My Verbatim USB 3.0 drive spins down (after a while) even if it's left plugged into USB and the computer is powered up.

0ptus_Fail on 31/07/2012 - 17:06 ¶For those in Newcastle, price matched with Hardley Normal for $145.
They had heaps in stock.
0ptus_Fail on 31/07/2012 - 17:25 ¶If your in Newy, don't need a receipt..
just call Bing Lee Bennetts Green to make sure they still have stock (when I rang this afternoon guy there said he had plenty) but make sure you ask that it's $149…
then walk over to HN and tell them and they should give you the better price ($145)

hollykryten on 31/07/2012 - 18:12 ¶The product page is showing as limited stock and it added to my cart although i'm not going to be buying it. So there must be a few units left in stock.

redcreek200 on 01/08/2012 - 10:53 ¶I was able to buy one online a few minutes ago. Maybe worth retrying every now and again.
chuneeperformance on 02/08/2012 - 13:48 ¶Has anyone received there's yet?
I placed a order of 4 and only received 1 box with 2 inside… do we get them in two separate deliveries etc?
chuneeperformance on 02/08/2012 - 13:52 ¶When it was posted here.. i got two drives in box with a shit load of bubble wrapping but missing etc drives..

I didnt install the motherboard drivers that came with it so the drive didnt work at all!!
So after installing the usb3 drivers the hard drive came to life, it worked on the usb2 ports fine but that not what I wanted.
I will have to test the speed an see what I get. What is bugging me is that, sitting on top of my tower, its quite a noisy drive… might leave it on the ground, hide it away… suppose I will have to use that sleep program that comes on the CD..

What's the warranty period? 1 year or 3 years?
