I'd agree with the don't use some sort of dangly attachment with the airtag in it (so the pet or other pets could find it interesting and try and play/eat it)

But the following comment at the start of the article makes no sense

"While attaching an AirTag to a pet's collar sounds like a good idea in practice, it would only help find them while inside the home network. If they ran away and got picked up by someone, the person finding the pet would need an updated iPhone or iPad nearby to ping the Find My network"

The whole point of AirTags are that they use the huge network of Apple iDevices that are just out there running software releases that are new enough to ping the find my network on behalf of any airtags in range (i.e. basically every iPhone that's newer than or had a software update in the past handful of YEARS - i.e. millions of them just here in Australia). This is by no means limited to just within someone's "home network"

Agreed, for an article from this year it's a bizarre claim to make. Unless the writer leaves in an extreme rural area where nobody can see their neighbour and that's what she had in mind, but then it still makes the claim irrelevant to most readers in urban areas.

      • What on earth? That’s just weird.

The network outside the home is the best thing about them! A friend’s BMW M4 was stolen a few weeks ago with an AirTag inside - he was able to give police location updates every few minutes until they finally nabbed them.

    • Was about to purchase, changed my mind

The airtag also makes a sound when it's been 8+ hours since contact with the registered iphone, could drive a pet nuts

Yeah should have a pet mode

        • Pet/Stalker mode.

    • Yeah, nah. I have an AirTag on my dogs collar and can’t see how any of those issues could occur outside of a very bored dog or very bad installation. I need to track my dog if she gets out or away. That’s the risk I am most exposed to and most in need of controlling.
It go as far to say that’s some sensationalised journalism.

    • I have a Tile and this (I assume) is rubbish based on my experience

it would only help find them while inside the home network. If they ran away and got picked up by someone, the person finding the pet would need an updated iPhone or iPad nearby to ping the Find My network.

To test it in a huge off-lead park with hills and heaps of trees I enabled "Tile Lost" mode and I received a notification and geolocation that was very accurate - especially if you can have line of sight for a couple of meters once you get to the pinged location.

You don't need the person picking up the dog to have an "updated iPhone or iPad"; you need someone nearby.

In a highly populated city there is no shortage of devices coming within range of a lost pet at any point.
