Motorola Edge 20 Pro 5G (6.7" OLED, 12GB/256GB, SD870, NFC, Dual SIM) $499 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

1660

Low price on this Motorola phone with some really good specs for $499. I own the Motorola Edge 20 which has a weaker CPU and less storage and it performs really well. Especially since it was released with Android 11, received Android 12 and Android 13 on the way.

Featuring 6.7" 2400x1080 OLED 144Hz display, Gorilla Glass 5, 12GB RAM, 256GB UFS 3.1 storage, Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 CPU, 4500mAh battery with 30W TurboCharge (USB-C), 108MP + 16MP + 8MP rear camera, 32MP front camera, fingerprint reader, Dual SIM, NFC, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 and Widevine L1.

This or the Poco F4 here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/765677

How many years of security updates does moto offer vs Xiaomi?

    • +1

2-3 years of updates with Motorola. Poco is two major updates and 3 years of security.

      • +4

That's the claim (by the manufacturer?). How often they get pushed is a completely different story.

        https://www.gsmarena.com/poco_f4_long_term-review-2516.php

        Read section 4 on software

        • How often they get pushed is a completely different story.

Absolutely. My OnePlus 7 Pro for example has been waiting almost 2 years for an Android 12 update and I still haven't received it yet even though it's 'technically' supposed to receive it.

          • @Zackeroo: My 7T got pushed the update (European). I've disabled the whole thing with ADB commands. Don't need that headache.

Im assuming you are also on the EU firmware. I know they started pushing the firmware for that model in December. You could try oxygen updater.

            • +1

@Hahuh: Even Oxygen updater is showing Android 11 at the latest. I've heard some terrible things about Android 12 anyways, so I'm quite happy on my Android 11 right now too. Just a bit unfortunate that this happened to a phone that originally received Android 10 in like 18 days or so, faster than any other manufacture.

              • @Zackeroo: I'm gonna go the pixel line when they bar my phone from the gsm network next year. Which brands are you looking at?

                • @Hahuh: Was going to buy an S23 Ultra this year through EPP but decided it wasn't worth it. I'd be looking at Samsung primarily though

                • @Hahuh: Why would your phone be barred next year?

              • @Zackeroo: Terrible things about Android 12 , all depends on what android device you have .

                • @Murkymerv: Both me and Hahuh have OnePus 7 Series phones. The android 12 update for this phone is known to have many issues.

                  • @Zackeroo: Not to mention the features it removes and the overall Chinese is look the new colour os updates employ.

                    Not a fan Jan

                    • @Hahuh: Yea same, just another reason why I'm not even wanting to update. I see everyone complaining about Android 11 and 12 on their phones meanwhile I'm happy here on A11 on my 4 year old OnePlus

          • @Zackeroo: my OnePlus 8 Pro however has received more updates than I can count since I first bought it nearly three years ago!

          • @Zackeroo: My OnePlus 7T Pro just got Android 12.. wish it didn't. Changed most of the amazing experiences I was having with the device. AOD is a total PITA nuisance to me as O± handled notifications fine (for me) without needing display forced on.
Battery seems to be used up more and I now can only warp charge with proprietary cable/brick.. don't get me started on don't change & sloppy widget rendering & lack of icon/app renaming..
If there a way I could roll back I would. Yet I have the T-Mobile McLaren edition from the Kogan BS the other year so stuck. Was a forced update as well..
Slowly dealing (read: coming to terms) with it yet still to see specific benefits 😕

        • Yes I stated the claim by the manufacturer. Poco have always been like that with updates.

Motorola were quick to push Android 12.

        • +1

If its any help, my Poco F3 got MIUI 14 & Android 13 a week or two ago.

        • There are constant updates. I flashed mine with miui.eu firmware.

        • This Motorola model is part of the android for enterprise program, it gets security updates within 90days. That doesn't mean it will get major version updates though, but it would be more likely then a phone that has a loose support policy.

    • -2

I will choose poco because of the MIUI

      • +24

You choose MIUI over vanilla Android? My o my…

        • +3

I know right. My son uses an Oppo and I cannot stand the UI

      • +1

It's good as long you disable ads

    • +6

I will choose Motorola at this price for Local ACL warranty.

      • +2

2-3 years of updates with Motorola.

This Motorola was released in Aug.2021

Safe to say there is at least 1 year of updates left.

      • +2

Apple does give an esim option .. so can be used as a second sim

        • +1

even Samsung has that esim feature. Eg S23

      • +1

@nomnomnom Security updates till Aug 2023 for this phone. The newer Edge 30 Neo and Fusion get 3 years of security updates. 30 Ultra is 4 years.

        • Thanks, only four months of updates left.. will have to pass..

    • Poco F4 has far better custom rom support, the Edge 20 5G appears to have a LineageOS built but with some issues.

Not sure if you are into custom roms, but it completely changes the experience.

    • Start looking at Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 phones coming into this price range, hell… Sub-$700 Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 smaller phones will be appearing soon enough.

This tech is just too old now to warrant this price tag.

  • +1

only missing is wireless charging. i know not everyone cares that.

    • +4

This is all I've been looking for in a mid-range phone really. After having issues with the charging port in my Poco F2 Pro, I'm not purchasing a phone without wireless charging next time.

      • +5

Sounds like you have charging port PTSD.

I have had many many phones (Im terrible with phones) with many many problems and not one of them has ever had a charging port issue.

        • +4

These ones have an issue with the flex cable connected to the charging main board, and I've had my phone fall/yanked a fair few times with the cord plugged in which has ruined the port too - that's on me, though a problem I'd like to avoid in the future lol.

So far I've replaced both and my fingerprint sensor has stopped working fully + mobile data is dropping out randomly indoors it seems unless I restart a couple times. At least it lives for now lol.

        • My lgv40 had issues with the charging port, I loved this phone. Reluctantly changed to Poco x3 pro which I love, but lately having dramas with power / finger print button . So keeping an eye on a successor.

      • +3

I am the same as you. I am still going with my old LG G7 after about 4 years which has had issues with the charging port. First it stopped fast charging, then it stopped charging altogether and wireless charging has given me an extra year or so out of the phone. Wont get a phone without it anymore.

        • +1

          Join the LG G6 club!!

        • Amen friend.

I'm a pixel 3 user. And cord is temperamental at best after cleaning port.

          I've decided port is cactus.

          Wireless charging ftw

      • +4

Have you tried magnetic cables to minimise stress to the port?

        • +1

I think magnetic cables have their own issues like having to lock into their ecosystem and quick charging is affected.

          • +2

@love2buy: Fair observation. I changed all my charging cables to magnetic and bought different dongles for the different devices we have at home. At least we can use any of the cables available when charging. Except for the time when my wife bought one that's incompatible 😂
            Still have quick charge though

            • @Kyx: Love my magnetic cables. The only issue with this type of cable seems sometimes there attract iron rocks from nowhere.

              • @Frankcjc: can you share which one/s you bought?

                same with you @Kyx please

                • @CVonC: Ooops… My link got deleted. Bougt from AliExpress. Brand is Floveme

                • @CVonC: I tried one generic brand, then Baseus, then Tegal. Tegal is the best one. Baseus and Tegal are compatible.

      • +2

@dsiritz @summit Thanks for the tip about wireless charging. Had bought a new phone when my previous 3 year old phone had a charging port issue and stopped charging.

      • +3

Once I had issue with charging port on iPhone, then found this kind of universal magnetic charging, I added just similar link below, not the one I bought 4 years ago… Never looked back, put plugs in majority of my devices: iPhone, android, headphones, tablets, kindle…
I prefer cables only with charging contacts, data pins add complications.

        https://m.aliexpress.com/item/1005003021342377.html

        • Will look into this. Thanks

      • +3

Get a magnetic charge cable. I've been using them for years and cannot go back to plugging and unplugging

      • The battery life shortens with wireless, so while replacing the battery you can replace the USB-C ;)

  • +1

I bought one a year ago and it still works well. This deal was a BARGAIN!

    • Are you surprised a phone lasts 1 year?

      • +1

I am surprised by your impolite provocation.

  • Is it the blue option that has the vegan case rather than the glass case of the other colours?

    • No. Its not vegan back. Its glass.

      • +1

        Glass is vegan

        • +2

As I understood, sam buster was probably referring to vegan leather back similar to the one Oppo Find X2 Pro had in orange color.

  • Holy crap balls. 16gb of ram?

    • +3

12GB. Paired with the 870 and it's good for gaming.

      • No doubt.

I bought the G82 when it was price errored at jb to use at as a burner gaming phone and cant fault it.

    • +2

I bought this one and it has 12gb of real ram + 3gb of virtual ram (virtual ram boosts overall performance) for a total of 15gb ram.

      • Oh interesting. I jsut did a quick google on this as I didnt know it was a thing.

      • +1

Does it really boost performance though? It should only need virtual ram if it runs out of normal ram, and the virtual ram should be less performant since it's using normal storage space.

        • Actually I'm not sure what the 3GB of RAM is used for, but perhaps it can be used for caching, which would still be helpful for performance.

      • I have a Realme X3 Zoom. It has 12gb RAM plus 7GB of virtual memory and it is running Android 12. Great little phone but I can't really tell if it's any good compared to other phones since I don't really play games on it. All applications loads up pretty fast even though the CPU is already a few generations old.

  • -2

    battery 4500mah

    • +3

Yep as mentioned in the description.

  • -1

anything below 5000mah is not a deal with 5G

    • +3

I get a whole day of usage and more without going flat.

      • +5

Where you live and your reception can be a factor.
I'm <10kmfrom Sydney CBD but 5G (and 4G for that matter) is quite spotty sometimes, causing my Moto to frequently change and search for networks which can be a massive power drain. And that's when it's not even being used.

That screen size and refresh rate is going to be a battery drain too, surely?

        • +1

          correct. also gps usage.

have Oppo reno z with 5000 mah bought in 2020 - it has still survived despite of constant usage during Covid :)

Battery over the period of time will wear out to some degree of percentage anyways

        • +1

In the centre of CBD so 5G coverage is no issue. Being the Edge 20 the 778G would be less power consuming than the 870.

    • If it's 5G-NSA like my SD870 phone gets on Telstra, it's no different in battery performance. 5G-NSA is just upgraded 4G.

  • Interesting that 2400x1080 is the standard res for mid range phones. Would be nice to see this increase on some mid range phones particularly the ones pushing $1000 dollars.

    • +3

This is not a mid range phone. It's a flagship phone from Motorola that's a couple years old.

      • Wow, okay, Samsung has had 1440 x 2960 pixels even back to s8 days.

        • +3

Phone screen resolutions used to be higher but now we have high refresh rate AMOLED displays.
          The Samsung S23 has a 1080 x 2340 pixels at 120Hz
Worth the trade off in my opinion

    • +7

Does a 4k display make much positive difference on such a small screen though? Increasing the resolution without increasing the screen would make everything on the display smaller, wouldn't it? Seems to be unnecessary added expense for not much benefit.
I would rather have a genuinely good camera on a budget-mid range phone. Or a brighter screen. Far more useful to me than gaming refresh rates.

      • Well, they upscale everything, and it is a bit clearer. I think it's a bit of a spec race thing and most people will get use to 1080p on such a small screen. After all, people thought the iphone xr looks great.

  • +2

So tempted to buy…but I've already bought the $200 G82 last year. 😱

    • +2

I'm in the same boat, the G82 has been nothing but fantastic for a $200 phone. Camera is a little average but after downloading GCAM it's been more than good enough.

  • +11

Still about $100 too expensive. Wouldn't pay that much for a Snapdragon 870 in 2023.

    • +2

Edge 30 Pro is $699 @ JB as well. It has Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

      • According to Geekerwan, real life performance for the 870 is actually better than the regular 8 Gen 1.

    • Dang , I got the order for POCO f4 5g for $480 with 870… Should I cancel the order ?

  • Typing on the edge 20 as we speak. Very solid phone

    • Slightly off-topic: My Edge 20 Fusion seems to frequently drop wifi comms, then re-establish. Have looked for solution with no luck. Anyone else have this issue?

      • +1

I have this phone and have not had issues with wifi. I had used TPlink, Netgear and Mi router\access points. Maybe try different wireless settings or set to compatibility mode if you have wifi 6.

        • Thanks - don't want to troubleshoot here, but have tried most of these :-( May PM you if I need to clarify (But your profile doesn't accept new conversations).

      • +3

My poco x3 pro kept dropping wifi connection over my deco mesh where i would have to reconnect all the time when moving around the house. I turned off fast roaming on my deco and haven't had a problem since. Hopefully this may help

        • +2

          deco mesh

My scenario. This may have solved it. Thanks for the pointer @Clavender

Looks like a Moto/Android + Deco compatibility issue for IEEE 802.11r

          • +2

@MadMapMan: No problem, happy to help.
Took me months of searching to find the solution. Seems to be a problem with a few phones

            • +1

@Clavender: My Edge 20 Fusion is now solid on WiFi thanks to this. Your months of searching are most gratefully received :-) Thank you!!!

  • how moto comparing to Samsung like S20FE or Oppo Reno 8 lite / Oppo find x5 lite in terms of front and back camera?

My last Moto phone camera did not produce pretty good photos.

    • Compare them on GSMarena.

  • +8

Not sure if people as re interested in this functionality but the phone does offer "ready for" which is a desktop like replacement in the same mode as Samsung Dex, further details here: https://www.gadgetguy.com.au/are-you-ready-for-motorola-read…
    Hope this helps

    • +2

I think that's such a cool feature. I love the idea of these really powerful devices given more of an opportunity to work as desktop computing machines (like using an xbox to run as a PC as well) although I can't honestly see myself using it.

I love the idea of having that functionality, but once you have to faff around with monitor and keyboard (and knowing whatever location you are wanting to work at has this) as well as the drain on battery life, it seems easier just to carry around a laptop.
