What to Look for When Buying a PS5 of Facebook Marketplace?

I'm looking to get a PS5 to play a few games I've had my eye on for a while.

As of the last few months they are no longer impossible to get, so I could get one from a variety of stores for ~$700-$800 (disc edition).

But also I see people on Facebook marketplace selling 'brand new' ones for $500-$600. So a saving of about $200.

Is there anything I should look out for to avoid issues down the line? Obviously check that it's all there and make sure it works, but anything else?

Warranty. How long they had it for.

Also, was it used horizontal or upright. I'd steer clear of verts

      • Why? It's not a big deal

      • Dunno why you are getting negs, but this is a very serious concern, certain models have the liquid metal from the cpu leaking down onto the motherboard which can and will cause shorts.

Because it's incorrect FUD. The examples that went viral were later retracted as being previously already damaged units and there have been no reports since.

@Hybroid: Sony will never admit to it, but there is a lot of revisions of the ps5, it did in fact affect certain versions of the ps5, however not all ps5s.

There is a lot of evidence to this being a fact. I do not know what actual evidence you are referencing when you say its been retracted, but it is indeed accurate.

just referencing 1 tweet does not in fact prove anything.

@garetz: Not saying it isn't an issue. But it is normal for complex hardware to have a lot of revisions.

Not worth the risk. Just pay for retail. Use some discounted gift cards to save 5-10%.

Buy brand new with full warranty rather than running the risk of getting scammed or a broken one or banned one. It's not worth it.

  • banned one

    Can a device be banned?

Yes, PS5s can get blacklisted from connecting to PlayStation Network. There's been a few complaints of people unknowingly buying these for cheap then wondering why they cannot connect online, download games/content etc. A banned PS5 will never be unbanned.

      • Can't you pay someone a few bucks to rebirth the baby ?

        • definitely not. you can't even get around console bans for other hacked sony consoles so i'm not even sure where you got the idea of it being possible for a ps5 lol.

    • Yep. I think you should check before buying but if you buy a cheap one for jailbreak it wouldn't matter.

I wish I sold mine when it still going for RRP so I could buy another one from EB Games and get 850 carrots. I'm like 4000 carrots away from level 4 😫

    • Don't worry too much - you probably didn't miss much since it seems the carrots on PS5 preorders never seemed to get allocated anyway after the completed purchase. This happened to me twice. The first time I fixed up manually over the phone, but the second purchase I haven't bothered with it since I was already level 4 at that stage.

    • As a former EB employee, carrots are completely irrelevant and probably the worst loyalty system ever. You're better off saving money buying from another store than trying to 'level' up on their platform.

The ones selling for $500-600 are scams you can tell from the low quality photos and all the ads are all posted with the same description. They direct you to a website to "purchase" usually say it includes two free games or a controller.

Just buy discount TCN cards when they come on sale..

  • Just be aware of 'referrals'. Many will list for sale but refer you to another website to purchase.

Don't buy these ones, don't give your details.

    • You're right, two of the people I messaged referred me elsewhere. What's their deal? Is it a flat out scam? (ie take the money and give nothing), or something shady but different? (Stolen property, refurbished sold as new, etc)

      • To direct you to website that you put money into and never see again..
