ZTE MU5001 5G Modem $5.61/Month on $20/Mo 20GB/Mo (40GB/Mo for 1 Year) Data Only Plan for 2 Years @ Optus

310

Save $300.24 on the regular price when you take it over 24 or 36 months ($3.74/month). Won't let you check out without adding the $20 month to month data only plan, I already had a data only sim with optus and they wouldn't let me just add the device to my account, but the girl in store was massively hopeless.

Min. cost $422.37, includes device payments over 24 months plus one month of your plan fees. If you cancel your plan, you will need to pay out any remaining payments for the device if you have chosen a device payment plan option, plus all charges outside of your plan inclusions which have been incurred up until the end of the payment cycle in which the service was cancelled.

Edit: $50 cash back, cashrewards

    Thingo? No technical jargon please

    • +6

What do you want from OP, they already shortened it into slang from Thingamajig

    • Dont ruin the aussie spirit

      you dingo

      • What are you talking about nobody even mentioned property

    • +2

      The correct term is "Thingy"

  • I was hoping you could cancel the $20 per month after the first month but no luck, "Min. cost $442.37, includes device payments over 24 months and one month of your plan fees."

Might be important to add to the total cost in the title

Update: Also when you go to the cart it mentions "Includes a $12.51 monthly device discount when you stay on an eligible Optus plan."

    • Yes, it seems the discounted monthly cost applies as long as you keep the data plan

  • +1

    thingo LOL

  • $18.40 a month for 24 months not too bad if you get Optus 5G at your location

    • Great if unlimited data

      • Optus data SIMs are usually shaped to 1.5Mbps so technically unlimited

        • What they mean is uncapped data. 1.5Mbps is enough for web browsing, standard rate Spotify streaming and maybe 480p video. Not really an ideal speed for a 5G modem with Wifi 6.

          • @pennypincher98: Think you mean unshaped. 1.5Mbps unlimited is uncapped

            • @0jay: No I don't mean unshaped. Speed is capped at 1.5Mbps. Telcos have probably lost the meaning of the word in their marketing bullshit, so I'll say unthrottled before they change that too.

              • @pennypincher98: Ok. I’ve always understood shaping to be speed throttling, capping to be an allowance cut-off but I’m willing to believe you understand some nuance better than I do.

    • How do you get it to be $18.40 a month?

      • I was going off TThomas’ min of $442.27 over 24 months.

        Didn’t check his math tbh

      • It’s $25.61per month with the minimum included plan (currently 40GB a month for the first year). $20 for the plan, $5.61 for device payments.

“Min. cost $442.37, includes device payments over 24 months and one month of your plan fees.”

        He was 0.10c off tho I can’t figure Optus’ math here. $25.61pm = $614.64 over 24

        • All good, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I guess the minimum cost works out that you are paying $422.37, but it’s a bit strange.

          • @benny85: If you’re tempted overall I’d bail them up about it instore.

If it’s a genuine error they’re likely to honour the $422.37. Optus are pretty good about meeting their obligations when held to task about it ime

    not at least 100gb yuck

  • +1

    Don't trust Optus anymore

  • Can this be unlocked?

    • +1

Not confirmed until I receive it, but research says that it comes unlocked. As in I've seen people say they have used other carrier sims straight out of the box.

  • +1

It is a pocket/portable wifi device not a plugin modem if anyone is confused.

  • Credit check too I suppose?

  • +8

I miss the $12.50 A8 plan from last year.

    • Yep, family friend has 2 payments left

    • for some reason it was $18.32 for me 😐

      • +2

You probably bought the bigger capacity device

  • any bigger plans?

    • No, but plan is included in data share

  • +5

BTW you can also just buy a 5G mobile for cheaper price than this. And just use that as a hotspot if you need a portable 5g modem.

OTHERWISE pretty sure that Nokia fastmile, or Sagecom 5G modems are about the same or cheaper too. Easily about 400 bucks or less on eBay.

So no need to go with FLOPTUS. Just save up money by buying straight up modems from other brands.

  • The Optus model does NOT have ethernet - even though devices with the same model number have ethernet.

    • It actually has network over usb c, not sure the speed though.

      • +3

Just tested it on my PC (USB 3.2 spec) and the device connects at 3.8 Gigabit to the PC.

        • Otherwise happy with the deal – hardware & service?
