St Mary's Cathedral Sydney Easter Mass

Hi folks.

I'm thinking of dragging my heathen kids to St Mary's Catholic cathedral tomorrow to sample a taste of what the elect get up to.

Can anyone tell if it's usually packed on an Easter Sunday morning or can we expect a place to park our butts and get a good view of the main characters?

Ta. And merry Easter to you all.

Probably goes something like this, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tQ4qxO7ya0

I assume it's like other churches and there's usually more people on Easter as is with Christmas.

    • That vid was a Wednesday. I'm checking the live stream now - looks pretty packed.

Do you hate your kids that much?
Careful of priests and boiled lollies.

    • Yeah but that first beautiful whiff of incense sorta makes it worth it. (That's mostly what I'm looking forward to anyway.)

      • nothing could be worth it…

"Don't worry Timmy, the monsters under your bed aren't real. The real ones are all in this book of fiction that's been peddled for 2000 years."

    • Pretty sure the real ones are actually outside that book, mostly clearly fake ones in there.

They're usually the ones reading the book out loud.

Mate, they're just more furniture. The whole establishment is full of monsters. To think otherwise is to kid yourself as hard as they do.

OzB may need a new category… Entertainment seems not quite right - and yes, I've attended on hundreds of occasions

Easter Sunday morning too? If so care to comment on the OP?

You don't sound too keen, I assume your kids will be even less so. Why are you planning to go?

    • +1

If I wasn't keen why would I be here asking about it? I wanna go because I want the kids to experience something they haven't experienced before. And I don't mind experiencing such a beautiful building in a context I've never experienced before too.

Love st marys. Haven't been for a mass etc but it's such a beautiful space that if there's a mass i could be dragged too, it'd definitely be there.

    Happy Easter

St Maryā€™s is a beautiful cathedral ā€¦. Just donā€™t look at who is buried in its crypt

    • Harold Holt?
      .

  • Cool and will you also drag your kids to a mosque for Eid prayers?

    • If I had guidance on how to do it properly / respectfully then sure, why not? Even better in a fancy looking mosque. Would be most interesting.

I bet people got no problem with zoos where you go to observe confined animals that don't wanna be there living in unnatural spaces. But people think it questionable to wanna go observe other members of my own species doing what they love doing most?

      • Actually I have a problem with some zoos but not all. The better ones are providing good environments and are interested in maintaining species that are dying out in the wild. Also the animals get good veterinary care and regular feeding. In nature animals can die from starvation and treatable illnesses. They can die frightened and in pain. It is a balancing act.

What zoos in Australia are providing a good environment for, say, elephants?

          • @afoveht: In the wild they are at risk of poachers. I think zoos like Werribee and the Dubbo would have the room for them. They arenā€™t ideal but there are trade offs.

Apart from the fact you are just guessing, you are setting your own standards for another sentient being that is not concerned with your standards. They have their own.

To confine a potential victim in lifelong prison to protect them from a threat is absurd on any level. It shows no interest in the victim as an individual, only appeases some humanocentric notion of how the victim's species is of significance.

Elephants in the wild have literally thousands of hectares more room, access to natural features, the sovereignty to go where they please, but possibly most importantly contact with their own families and brushes with other members of their own species.

There are no tradeoffs - elephants in any Australian zoo are either stolen from their own homes or the result of confined breeding. Pretty much every elephant in zoos demonstrates some level of zookosis. They are the silently tortured.

Take a holiday in Iran to see members of your species doing what they love

Actually I've been invited to Iran by Iranians.Didn't go at that time because of some time conflicts. Not sure of your point? That there are places one might not want to see? Or might be unsafe? Sure, I dodge the meat aisle at Woolies and stay clear of nightspots riddled with drunken men all the time.

Obviously you are looking at a Catholic Church but there is a joke that CE stands for Christmas and Easter because that is the time a lot Church of England people turn up to Church.

Watch Jim Jefferies - Heaven & Hell
"Hello Uncle who used to touch me, how did you get up here (heaven)? Oh that's right you used to work for the church!"

Donā€™t ya just love the concept of absolution.

His piece on gun control is the greatest take down of how Americans justify their guns that Iā€™ve seen. He isnā€™t a ā€œbleeding heart liberalā€ he is just pointing out how stupid their arguments are.

St Mary's is a beautiful cathedral and they have lovely services.

Might be easier to pick a smaller, but still beautiful, church in your local area or surrounding suburbs to see if the kids enjoy it before going to a really big one. I remember going to St Johns Cathedral for midnight mass one year and it was just HUGE with the crowds of people - depending on the age of the kids it could be quite intimidating.

And yes, I realise this is after the event - but just a thought.

Ta. Went today, got kickarse seats at the front. Got a bit long by the end but an entertaining morning out. The building is something else.
