Both Virgin and Qantas have become a joke trying to use points for business class seats
clearly you aren't searching hard enough
just from a quick search on QF, there are 7 dates next month with business availability from syd - sfo. 12 dates with syd-hkg, etc.
There is availability, just not a lot. You have to be prepared to move your travel schedule around it if possible.

no but not worth it at all. This offer is available directly from virgin/velocity website as well. Yesterday i tried to buy a ticket and was short of ~18k points which i was asked to pay ~$100. Same number of points if im to purchase including the discount would cost me ~$500!!
This is not a deal. The retail value from Virgin is about $1 to 132 points. They are charging (at the maximum 30% discount) $1 for 62 points, almost double the cost. For this reason I thought it was a scam, a quick search and "Because of the high trade fees and poor exchange rates, points.com is almost entirely pointless. They also don’t have a lot of points/miles programs which means using it as a place to consolidate and view your points is also pretty useless."
