No maybe, I don't know. Can you repeat the question?

      • Do you think that story you're telling yourself is accurate?

        • You're not the boss of me now.

          • +1

@CodeXD: Wouldn't it be nice if for once someone would take care of you?

  • +9

What is it that people order from eBay? Personally (and I may be attacked for this), I don’t find anything good to order from eBay. Groceries are expensive, and other items seem substandard compared to Amazon … I genuinely want to know what people use eBay for, and how is it they find it good value?

    • +2

Id like to know too as well. Sometimes there are meaningful ebay deals but not like they used to (like PS4 etc).

Sounds like kind of gambling saving of 7% but locking up hundreds of dollars with ebay for prolonged periods of time.

One might think to spend that 100s of dollars on a 10% paying dividend ETF/Stock and take your chances there instead…

      • height of inflation my friend
the profit cuts backwards ha ha

      • +3

Yeah I used to stock up on eBay cards till I realised it would take me years sometimes to get through them. I don't bother anymore. Too many price jackings whenever there is a sale

        • +2

Ive bought laptops for myself and others most recently from eBay, monitors too. Cant really beat the stacking promos.

    • Ordered the Apple TV 4k 3rd gen, pretty substantial savings plus gift card, it depends. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/770183

I haven't been stocking as much eBay gift cards recently, reason mostly it's just unpredictable as to what kind of deals show up on eBay and second, you're often waiting (and hoping) that a coupon code shows up that includes the seller you want to buy from. This might be fine if you're wish-listing stuff and have planned to buy that item perhaps 3 to 6 months in advance.

And if you don't use a coupon to buy, you're usually paying an inflated price. I end up waiting for Afterpay day because I know these codes cover the most sellers.

Amazon gift cards are my go-to, I have bought maybe $3000 worth of Amazon gift cards in the past 2 years or so. Less than half for eBay, and I only buy them when they're at least 10% off.

      • +5

        Same.

Once upon a time (2015-16), I used to order from eBay (not heavily, just once in a while). But ever since I started using Amazon, I can’t really like eBay… Amazon seems so smooth … Love the overall experience of shopping there.

        • +1

Pretty much me. I have like 5 eBay transactions this year, compared to over 350 on Amazon for 2023

          • +1

@I Smell Pennies: What kinds of things are you buying to have 350 Amazon purchases when we're only 4mths into the year?

            • @DeToxin: Pennies is very active on warehouse (short dated) stuff

      • +4

Agree, ebay is like a $2 shop these days. hardly buy something more than $10.

Big W is gone, Officeworks is gone, Dan Murphy is gone.

Missing the good old days when I stacked up EOFY sale of TGG + ebay 20% off code+ 10% off gift card +10% no cap cashback, end up around 70% off a f&p front load washing machine.

        • Coles is gone.

        • +1

good old days of 15-20% off Gift cards via Paypal UK including wish GC, eBay GC, then stacked with 20% off Macbooks at Myer, appliances at TGG. To name a few.
Easily 35% off RRP of popular stuff.
Note: straight discount no long-wait cash back back then.

      • At least 10% off eBay gift cards? When and where? That must have been long ago excluding those tiny Cashrewards and Shopback gift card offers.

    • -1

I use eBay to spend money and make even more money 😉

    • +2

Not really everyday items, but more wishlist stuff that I'm happy to wait 6 months or more for if I can get it at around 50% off. Things like camera gear and lenses, computer gear. You'd be hard pressed finding that stuff half price on any other site (and I generally can't be bothered dealing with people on FB / Gumtree).

      • Yeah, I see what you mean …

    • +1

Coins, banknotes, sometimes gold and silver. Meteorites and fossils. Packing material for my business. I buy all sorts of things on eBay.

      • Yeah but you can't use eBay giftcard to buy gold, currencies etc as excluded.

    • +1

Iagree until last year they were horrible but now they changed.this month, ordered Enlope rechargable batteries cheaper than china price, arrived in 3 days, AU stock it says plus warranty made it peace of mind. Just wines or any wines regularly posts good quality wine deals on ebay. ordered mystry deal <$69 of dozen and received 3 grange class valued atleast $70 each. just keep an eyes on there are lot of things locally not even Amazon price beats.

    • +3

SupercheapAuto is my go to. Brake pads, wipers and all that. I got 55% back from my recent brake pad change.

      • Should add. You can get dirt cheap burner phones as well like smashed Samsung S9 for $20-30 stacks and sometimes even free.

    • +2

Most of my stuff is from Sparesbox or Supercheap (hydraulic jack, brake pads, rotors, car wash, coolant). Their prices with an extra 20% off are very competitive and shipping is free with Sparesbox. Pair it with Shopback + Westpac bonus and it’s even better.

    • +3

I buy mostly products from BigW, chemist ware house or other retailer via eBay, if they are the same price in store and if I can use vouchers like the $5 per month with eBay plus. I live remote and the next bigW is 45km away. The next myer is 4 hours away and same for chemist warehouse. For me it’s very valuable, because I get it free delivered and with codes even cheaper. I wouldn’t bother much if I would live in the city like in Adelaide. Electronics like my oral b Io9 was 20%. cheaper than in store and free delivered via eBay.

      • I take it you haven’t heard the news about BigW eBay store…

        • +1

Can you provide the link to the removal of big w ebay store? I tried googling it and couldnt find any article/comments about it. On their ebay page itself it says they are away til 23 April 2023…
Mid Feb I still managed to score almost a half price net savings for Lego Ferrari 42125..

        • What happened?

    • Ebay can still be good at times with the odd deal here and there, but isn't what it used to be that's for sure.
They were cheaper for a phone case and hdmi cable I wanted, then I had an ebay plus code on top.
Recently bought line trimmer wire, $30 for 270m or so.

Ebay is still the best for second hand items such as comics book, old games etc. Just depends on what you're into I guess. Certainly not what it used to be though.

    • +1

Seeing a deal posted here on OzB from some store, noticing that it's either out of stock or shipping is absurd in my state, then checking their official Ebay Store for the same product at the same price with a better delivery option and stackable with ebay coupons 😏

    • Most recently I have bought:

      Doona.
      Workshirts.
      Toaster.
      Refurb laptop
      Refurb SFF PC.
      Keyboard for PC.
      NexGard spectra for dogs.
      Tools and car parts also.

I generally only buy from ebay if it's the cheapest price I can find, and when coupons are involved you can get some good prices.

    • Second hand goods, sometimes the odd electronics item from a larger store stacking discounts or occasionally cheapest place for computer parts.

      On the decline though.

    • lots of good refurb computer gear. I resell/use ex corporate sff machines for small business clients. they rarely need a current gen box for basic internet & spreadsheet tasks. they are cheap enough that I can keep a stock of identical machines & replace/deploy them in the spot.

I keep a couple in my car ready to go.

    • I buy small value items as I need them but don't have Prime so rarely meet the free shipping ($39) without buying more I probably don't need. In general I find Amazon prices for the exact same item is usually higher but their range is bigger (so I might find cheaper variant).

Here are my (boring) ebay purchases over past few months:
      - toilet roll holder
      - USBC magnetic cable
      - dog worm medication - likely to repeat
      - (separately…as I realised I needed them. This might keep growing) couple bike tools and chain.
      - a specific tea I like but WW/Coles stopped stocking. Ebay charges less shipping than buying direct. Likely to repeat.

    • Great for my business. I put auspost satchels, stamps, prepaid packaging - at a discount. Otherwise it would have been through auspost at regular retail

Last 8% deal was 3 per account, curious if it's the same this round.

  • Meh.

  • +5

I may be unlucky but I've found eBay's customer service worse than Telstra.
Amazon provides a better shopping experience and superior customer service.

    • +1

If you find an unsatisfactory response, go again and find someone else.

      • Spoke to a different agent every 1-2 weeks and took 4.5 months to resolve an issue

        • Quite patient to wait 1-2 weeks. I went through 3 different agents in just one hour.

  • +11

not stocking up - 10% off is the bare minimum to buy any GC's these days unless you are desperate..

    • My thoughts exactly, 7% is almost an insult.

    • But if u can get unlimited and use max in a transaction $1500, 7% is still $105 off :)

      • You can only use gift cards in one transaction.

        • +1

Think you left out the number 8.

      • This deal looks to be capped at 10

    • I think same. I’m not going for under 10% unless I desperately need something from EBay.

    • Desperate Tom here . Save $20 on the other everyday place per 1K looks good .

    • When is there 10% off eBay gift cards except for those tiny offers by Cashrewards and ShopBack?

  • +1

EBay is still used a bit but I usual go there when Amazon don't have what I want. I usually purchase stuff from major sellers but these are items that are normally a once off purchase. Generally, big purchase items that are cheaper than retail due to % discounts and the usage of gift cards.

Gift cards I try and get the multiple store ones (where you aren't stuck with just ebay) so I don't risk holding credit when there might not be a purchase for some time.

Bought a recipe book recently and it's not old, but was release last year. Major retailers were not selling it and bookstores were selling near RRP (online and in-store). Amazon was slightly cheaper than bookstores but not cheaper than the ebay price (from private seller).

I also found use of various discount codes and managed to use a $5 off purchase voucher that eBay was running at the time.

It's rare, but ebay occasionally has some rough diamonds from time to time.

Note I have both Amazon Prime and ebay plus as it's necessary to not pay on shipping costs which if you didn't have these subscriptions. Any small discounts would be eaten away generally by the high shipping cost.

  • Wonder how many you can buy?

  • +1

10% on swap celebration to 7% on eBay. Hmmmmm. Shrinkflation!!!

    • +2

Swap giftcard is cheaper as there are more hoops to jump through. More hoops increase the chance that the giftcards may be never used.

  • +2

I still have the last three 100$ GCs at 8% lol

    • Would you sell them?

  • +1

    Bah.

  • +1

I initially read 100% cashback on a $7 eBay GC, rip

    • I'm in .
I'd fire till they kick my ass out of there :)

  • +2

    Limited to max 10. 🤔

It will be interesting to see how long before this sells out because it's not that impressive of a deal tbh. Only 4% extra cashback over what's normally available through Swap Celebration.

  • did anyone buy? showing "payment unsuccessful" with 2 cards but was ok yesterday to buy $20.

    • +1

Yes. 2 separate transactions of 1x$100.

    • Yes. No problems here. Bought multiple cards, over multiple transactions.

    • tested even couldn't buy $25 now, showing "Unusual card activities detected". is it because I added 2 cards (all prepaid) in 2days?

  • +4

Sold out in 15 minutes? How could you get it so wrong to estimate 5 hours. Amateurs.

    • The place is full of em :)

    • Yeah it's really annoying. We need more that are like the 15% Apple Gift card sale that went for a week…

  • OOS so quick?
