  • Thanks OP. I was looking at this printer just last night.

  • +2

Nice printer this. We got one a few months ago.

  • +2

Gah, I literally ordered this printer off eBay for $299 on Thursday night!

  • +5

    Can you use aftermarket cartridges?

      • +9

        Useless comment

    • +11

Been using aftermarket in mine for years from Inkstation, works great!

      • Thanks. How much do they usually cost? Regards

        • +1

          50 bucks looks like

      • Firmware has been updated to look for chip, bit of a misleading comment as if hate to buy off your recommendation

      • which one are you using for this printer? I just bought one from this deal. Any recommendations?

    • +19

You can but I recommend keeping the chips off the original ones - just unscrew them. I had a batch of aftermarket ones where it failed to recognise the toner. Luckily I still ha the originals and just replaced the chips over, worked again.

      • Any aftermarket recommendations?

        • Aussie Toner on ebay…bought about 3 sets of colours by now, they are pretty much on par with the OEMs…

          • +1

@willister: Do you have the link for them?

            Thanks in advance

          • @willister: Can you provide the link please? I just bought one. And how long they usually cost? And how to keep original chip?

  • +4

Anyone know the comparative running costs of these colour lasers?

I just bought an Epson ecotank because ink xosts are close to zero, but these brother duplex laser printers (in black and white) at least are also incredibly cheap to run and are amazingly reliable.

Edit: just googled. I ballpark the running costs to be around 4x a colour ecotank, still pretty good as I regard laser to be much better for speed of printing and durability.

    • -1

Ecotank (I had one) you have to make sure you use it enough so it doesn't clog.

However inkjet is safer so I'll stick with them no matter costs.

      https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/system/files/documents/…

      • +2

The report states that laser printers are safe…

          • +8

@killingtime: We are talking about occasional home use here. Not a print shop running 8 hour shifts in an unventilated room.
Ventilation is good for many reasons.

If you are going to be that risk averse, best not to get out of bed in the morning. OTOH, a lot of people die in bed.

          • +6

            @killingtime: In the conclusion.

Each of the assessments indicates the risk of direct toxicity and health effects from exposure to laser printer emissions is negligible

      • +5

I'm not trying to troll or start an argument, but the link you gave states "risk of direct toxicity and health effects from exposure to laser printer emissions
is negligible". While this may mean higher VOCs or SVOCs than an inkjet, it seems the levels are nothing to be concerned about.

        • -8

Thank you. I'm not mainly concerned about direct toxicity but long-term exposure. I'm just afraid of another forever chemical style problem. We also thought those were safe for decades until recently.
I fully admit I am probably paranoid but inkjet printers are similar in cost for my use case so I just err on the side of caution.

          • +4

@killingtime: I think there is more risk from a Paper Cut.

          • +5

@killingtime: What about chemical emisions from all of your furniture, carpets, air freshener, cologne, deodorant, ultrafine particles in air pollution and finally the processed food and refined carbs you eat (oh, of course you don't) and chemicals leeching from plastics where you store your food and drink take away coffee from? And there you are worried about a laser printer you use couple of times a week. Lol.

            • +1

@findingbargains: I’ve a feeling killingtime probably exercises caution in those areas too

      • I've previously run both a 6 colour ecotank and a mono duplex Brother laser, both for around five years.

        Both were fantastic printers.

      • +5

On the subject of 'safety' I have been running multiple particle counters that measure down to PM2.5 for half a decade as I used to live in a highly polluted city. I have done obsessive levels of measurement under many different conditions, and have no concerns running an laser printer at home for occasional use.

        • good to know, thanks for sharing

    • +1

take away info from it is if you were in an office environment, you do not want to be sitting next to one.

for Home use it sounds like not much of an issue, but if you want to play it safe simply locate your laser printer in an open/well ventilated area in the house, away from your home office.

      • +3

All office printers are fitted with dust and ozone filters. Having worked on these for 25 years I have no worries about toner based machines.

        • +2

In the only office I've bothered measuring with my cheap particle counters, areas near the printers were exactly the same as anywhere else.

The filtration systems in that building were fantastic- everywhere had clean air.

  • +9

    Purchased this model last year.
This is an excellent printer with more than enough speed and precision at home.
Aftermarket cartridges are cheap as well.
    Overly impressed.

    • Can you provide the link please? I just bought one. And how long they usually cost?

    • +8

Did you look at the product page before asking in here?

      • +6

        No.

        Does it copy?

        • +4

          No.

          Does it record 4K?

          • +4

            @2025: No.

            Does it print?

            • +1

@jj8aus: no. is there band 28? I'll see myself out

          • +1

@2025: What about Crysis, how many FPS?

            • @Oxxy: HODL!

Brother are greedy! No way this is worth any more than $100

FPS per dollar is bad on this one

        • +2

Yes, if you take a photo of whatever you want copied, then print it out from your phone to the printer. (Results may vary)

        • +2

          Does it blend?

      • +1

Does it answer questions I can google?

      • No.

Did you count the number of letters in your reply vs the word 'no' ?

Also, Is this compatible with my Switch?

  • +7

Great deal. Have this printer. it’s been super reliable for 2+ years. Love the AirPrint and the output quality is better than any inkjet I owned plus it duplexes (2 sided print)
    Great bang for buck.

    • +2

Same, had it over 2 years and everyone in the house wirelessly prints to it from all different devices including phones.

    • Which cartridges do you use? Can you provide the link please? I just bought one. And how long they usually cost?

  • +2

Thanks OP! Easy price beat at Officeworks.

  • +2

Add me to the list of happy owners.

Reliable, Double-sided printing (duplex), laser—so crisp test and images, and AirPrint. Cheap cartridges online (don’t buy official)

    Always reliable

I changed the auto off setting to 10 mins, which increased reliability as it would turn off by default after 1min

    • Which cartridges do you use? Can you provide the link please? I just bought one. And how long they usually cost?

      • +3

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/124190964737?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

$74.50 for CMYK (4x cartridges), plus one extra K cartridge (so 2x black cartridges overall)

Working fine for me. Zero issues. Printer recognises them without issue (sometimes a problem as cartridges have chips in them… manufacturers trying to crack down on third party cartridges)

Big tip: never update printer firmware as that can break compatibility with third party cartridges. Printers simply print, nothing to gain by updating firmware, so ignore the advice in the software to update

  • +5

Thanks OP, just picked up at officeworks $236.55

    • Can you provide a copy of your receipt thanks

      • I can pm you

Or just go to OW. They're pretty good at price beating. Others below have done the same

  • Ok ill give it a go

  • I've had real troubles getting airport to work on this model. Printer keeps disappearing from AirPrint, and I have to log into the web interface, print a test page and retry a few times to get it to connect. static IP assigned in the router. Anyone else had this issue, or tips?

    Otherwise, it's good unit.

    • +1

AirPrint uses MDNS have you had issues with other printers and Airprint?

      • First AirPrint printer in the house, replaced an older canon inkjet, so no previous AirPrint setup to compare with. Pretty stock setup here… Asus RT-AC86U router. have tried having the printer cabled direct to router (printer is only 2.4gh vs iPads etc on 5gh networks…. that shouldnt matter though… have also tried using the 2.4gh wifi on the iPads too.) ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        • +1

You don't have client isolation by any chance?

          • @deme: Just checked.. set to off.
(thanks for your help btw. appreciated)

            • +2

@timmof: Well this is interesting: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/rt-ac86u-enable-efficient-…

Does you router settings look like this https://www.snbforums.com/proxy.php?image=https%3A%2F%2Fuplo…

according to the threat that's meant to work

Multicast is the M in MDNS

              • +1

@deme: "Enable multicast routing" was set to off. I've enabled it, and just tried to print something from my iPad. No AirPrint printer found.

Update (like 10 seconds later): Printer turned up as found. So this could be the fix. Will have to monitor my wife's screaming at me for the words "f#$%ing printer" and see if it's a permanent fix.

Thanks so much for your help. That's some serious google-fu you have there. +2 internet beers to you.

                • +1

@timmof: The other thing I found is https://superuser.com/a/1347043 but you said you plugged it in directly

                  Hope it keeps working

                  • @deme: Yep, I'd found that page a few months back. Have airtime fairness disabled. (Had tried both wired and wireless - it's actually wifi at the moment.)
Seems to be working from a couple of devices, so might have nailed it with the multicast routing. Thanks again mate.

  • Starter toner - how many pages ?

  • +2

damn! that's a very good deal, but my old HP laser Frankenstein just refuses to die.

  • Bought a heavy used one that lacked full magenta print. Was told to have old firmware to go on all aftermarket supplies. Very heavy and sturdy built. Clumsy setup. New magenta drum did not fix it. So replaced all toners. Near perfect print but some yellows missing on every y drum turn. Drum change makes no difference.
2 Weeks of no use and it now comes up with no toner found message.

  • +1

Got one to replace my black and white brother printer. Thanks OP

    • +1

I also had it price-matched at a local office works store for $236.55. It seems to be the last one available and it is quite heavy. Unfortunately, I dropped it on the floor and now my back hurts.

  • Thanks OP been looking for an affordable laser printer. Cheers

  • -2

Great printer. Actually got it for free when Dragonfly delayed the delivery. Amazon gave full refund.

  • Just called my local officework. Useless manager arguing over shipping cost even when I showed him I am a prime member.

  • I need a scanner, brother MFC-L3770CDW is always expensive and looks bulky af. Should I just suck it up and grab this at OW. I use a scanner but not $300s worth.

    • For scanning, I will continue stick with the My HP 2620 ($19 from a clearance sale), it has automatic document feeder.

      • +1

I've got an Epson 730, might have to keep as scanner. Just a monster in size to have size by side lol

    • +1

Scorptec had a sale for high 400's, but they are out of stock unfortunately https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/printers/laser-colour-mu… . I was looking for 3770 myself :) I was planning on 3750, but this looks very tempting for esstially scanner less (dont care for the touch scren )

    • Can confirm the 3770cdw is bulky af

  • -1

Regular price $349, for that price it needs to have wireless and scanning capabilities.
