Good deal, I'm just not sure about the .au.com format sounds like cause for confusion when giving your email/web address out.

    • Yeah, I did think the same thing. I got one just for a personal site I'm setting up…
Definitely a bit confusing if you're going to use it for business use.

      yes I really think it's a bad idea / product / service.

.com .com.au .net .net.au etc are top level domains.

au.com is a registered domain off of a .com - big difference

Net Registry have simply registered au.com and are selling you subdomains off of that (OK 'giving it away' this year) but it won't be free for ever. and since you don't 'own' a full domain you won't be able to transfer it away to another reseller - tying you to them for life.

Plus I think this just adds confusion for user .com.au .au.com … I still hear people saying UBS instead of USB - but in this case it could send people or confidential emails off to another domain.

useful if you want a domain to route to your home NAS .. but give they will charge eventually for it - just use a FREE DNS service, I'm sure .au.com name isn't worth the hassle.

      • Agree. You don't get a domain, you are leasing a subdomain. Many reasons why this is bad.

$20 for what is essential a sub-domain. No.

  • Valid for a year, pretty good deal. Fun to play around with I reckon, theres plenty of names still available too.

  • Sounds like you wouldn't really own a domain, but rather you "rent" a subdomain from someone who owns "au.com".

not many people will go to a .au.com site as it sounds dodgy

    • On top of that you are getting a subdomain. You can get subdomain from many places for free (for ever).
For testing, why not, I would probably +ve it, but claiming $19.95 as RRP or even continuing for $19.95 after 12 months - that is a rip off! For 2 years you can get proper .com.au easily for around $22. Or you can get this .au.com crap for $20… hmmmm

  • At least you could put a divert into a .com.au if you own that domain.

    • But what the point of this would be?
Noone is going to unintentionally swap .com.au to .au.com.
What is much more likely to happen is that someone will unintentionally swap .au.com to .com.au
In which case if you own the .com.au you win, if you own .au.com you loose.

  • deal expired ??
I cant find anywhere on the site that mentions a free domain

    A company I worked for had a .au.com domain….
Every single time our email address was given out clarification was needed - re:I do mean .au.com not .com.au

If you dont mind this then go your hardest cos it really is shit.

Too confusing. and maybe a bit scammy.

  • I guess it is a way around not needing an ABN to get a .com.au

    • AKA dodgy…

I would stick with the Google and MYOB deal of a Free .com.au for 2 years.

    http://www.gettingbusinessonline.com.au/

You do get a plain boring website, but the domain can be transfered else where.

  • how about following some domain naming standards ffs.

  • This is like renting a house, but discovering that you are only renting a room

It's like making a date with a Kardashian & then realising it's Khloe

  • I remember in the UK about 15yrs ago someone started selling .uk.co domains
Any one who had one just hated it because every time they handed out their email address they had to say it 10 times (like creative parents giving their kids a mispelt name). Even online people will assume you've having a lexDyslic moment. Don't do it

More importantly how is it valued at $19.95? a .com is $7/yr, so a subdomain must be worth what 70c/yr?

  • o_O! Wow. Good hints from everyone above.

  • Subdomain…. not a deal.
I was going to sign up but thanks to all the ozbargainers not now

  • After 12 months you have to pay $20 a year for a subdomain. Useless.

  • This isn't a deal, this is just a scheme to attempt to make money back on their purchase of the au.com domain which wouldn't have been cheap.

  • LOL!
