  • Can this unit be programmed to vacuum and mop certain areas and vacuum other areas? Can it handle a small increase in height (1/2 inch) to go into rooms?

Are there any consumables required for this and is maintenance simple?

Looking for something as this will save an hour or so a week. Thanks.

This model can climb from wood floors to carpet but can’t be mapped out. There more expensive models have all the features your looking for.
Maintenance is as easy as emptying the hopper and banging out the filter a full clean/blowout every 3-6 months goes a long way too.
If your lazy like myself just brush all your countertops off onto the floor and let the robo do it’s thing 😂

    • If you want mapping you would need the following Kogan model

      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarthome-lx16-robot-vacu…

Compared to the branded models its still way cheaper. I have this model and would recommend it.

    No LIDAR… not “smarter” home.
I strongly urge people to stretch to a model that has a laser turret…
Even a second hand roborock or dream

    • So you set it to mop function and it will mop timber and know when it hits a rug for example and stop mopping and start vacuum? Or not that ‘intelligent’. Also does it mop well? Thanks

      • No, basically all the "mopping" ones just drag around a cloth. There's no way for it to stop mopping mid cycle.

    • +2

So, it’s just going to donk around randomly on everything and prob not do the whole house?

      • It won’t really know where it is. It’ll rely on the forward motion so it’ll leave spots in leaned as compared to laser mapper.

I’ve found mop functions never work anyway on these things

        • The mop function is just a gimmick anyway and even at the top tier end isn't all that impressive and it makes sense why, it's not applying any level of force or multiple passes to make it compare to you with a mop.

    • It states that this unit will map the house. What benefits would LIDAR have over this?

      • +1

LIDAR means an accurate and persistent map.
Simple locomotion mapping is fairly crude and will vary from run to run

Some "dumb" eufy ones are better than most lidar ones.

      • If any one can confirm this is better or lidar would not much diff. For small 2 bedroom house

This one is better than vacuum wars.

        • I can confirm this is definitely not anywhere near as good as Lidar.

Even if it had a highly sophisticated roller cleaning system and high suction (it has neither) it has no idea where it's been or where it needs to go next. It will literally just bounce around between obstacles like a really bad game of Pong. There will be lots of places around the edges of a room it just never goes to, while other areas in the middle of the room will be vacuumed 30 times over. There's no guarantee it will ever make it through a doorway into another room at all. You'll probably find it wedged behind the toilet at some point.

Ecovacs are selling factory refurbished Deebot Ozmo 920's with 6 months warranty for $270 posted on eBay. It has a Lidar sensor and proper navigation, spare parts are plentiful, and it will be far more efficient and effective than Kogan's offering.

    • It is smarter home btw I tell Alexa to turn the vacuum on most days and connects to smarter home app

  • i said to my mate its life changing so he went out and bought a $600 branded one and said its not that impressive

Probably because you talked up a $200 bottom of the rung robot vacuum as life changing and he went in with heightened expectations.

    • whatever you want to think mate 😂😂 he got a Roomba maybe there just shit

      • Roomba created the very first popular robot vacuum, but these days are widely regarded as being overpriced and underperforming.

Roborock and Ecovacs are the top tier manufacturers.

      • Yours is actually not very good, but if it suits your needs and you enjoy it then power to you.

        maybe there just s***

        they're*

  • +1

Robot vacuums without room mapping are almost universally trash and not worthwhile, even at this price. They do not clean effectively or efficiently, often get lost or stuck, and generally do a pretty terrible job.

Save your pennies, and buy something with a Lidar sensor. A used Roborock, Deebot etc will only cost a little more than this deal and do a far better job.

Indeed! Then you can rest easy that the manufacturer has a nice, clear plan of your house layout safely stored on their servers forever, with a pinky-promise they'll never, ever use it for nefarious purposes.

      • Would you like a floor plan of my house?

Even if that was the case, what is somebody going to do with that kind of info…

      • I'd be happy to upload the actual floor plan of my house to the internet, if you like. Without an actual address, it's pretty useless information.

        • -1

Don’t worry, they don’t need you to give them your address yourself. It’s surprising how easily a location can be pinpointed from a combination of IP address, Wi-Fi network name, and your router’s MAC address. Sure, you could brush it off and say you don’t care if a complete stranger knows the floor plan of your home, but the question I have is why do they need it in the first place? They wouldn’t be collecting that kind of data for no reason.

          • @Chazzozz: The map of the house is what makes it useful. On a basic level, a map means that your vacuum can navigate directly to a particular room to clean it. It will still navigate around a chair in the way, but it will figure out the route on its own.

For more advanced features, you can tell it which rooms to vacuum, and create a schedule so that those rooms are cleaned at a particular time - for instance, you can have your kid's bedroom vaccumed every Tuesday while they're at Gran's, or clean the kitchen and under the table at 9.30pm every night after dinner.

Then you can do things like telling it to also mop the hard floors while cleaning, and lift up the mop when passing over carpet or floor rugs.

            • @klaw81: I'm not disputing the usefulness of a robotic vacuum being able to map out an area that it's meant to clean - that's definitely very handy. What I object to, and the point I was trying to make in my off-hand quip above, is the fact that data will often not stop at the vacuum and is instead funnelled back to…someone else. Why do they need that? You argue that it's convenience, I argue it's borderline surveillance.

              • @Chazzozz:

                I argue it's borderline surveillance.

you know how many cameras you're on when you step outside and go to a cafe, or an ATM?

              • @Chazzozz: The map is available on the cloud to enable the remote features of the device.

Examples include commencing a clean of a particular room while outside the wifi, or using a voice assistant to commence the same process.

I don't see any good way to design the machine itself to store the data locally and interface with a voice assistant without a cloud service. Perhaps it can be done, but it would doubtless make the process less convenient and far less extensible - mine is linked to a local Home Assignment server for advanced control features and automations.

I am not at all concerned with this particular aspect of surveillance, but everyone has a different tolerance for this kind of risk.

      • Oh man here we go.

Do you use Google? Chrome? Facebook or any social media? LinkedIn? Have a smart phone with Wifi/bluetooth? Boy do I have news for you.

        • -1

Exactly my point. It's all around us, but it's so ubiquitous that nobody questions it (or, in some cases, care). I'm just pointing out there's an elephant in the room that nobody is willing to see. How you make peace with it is your business, but I retain the right to openly question it even if that sentiment proves unpopular.

    • Whatever you want to think mate. I’ve had this one for 2 years and come home to a clean room everyday. For $200 I’m very happy

  • This looks very similar to a Kyvol unit, which itself is probably based on another reference design from Kyvol's vendor itself. (Maybe 3irobotix or similar)

I myself would be partial to the Dreame/Viomi units that are capable of running Valetudo instead, as that at least can be self-contained and spare parts easier to come by because of their popularity.

  • +1

Thanks OP, at $200 I'm going to have a crack this, noting that something with lasers would be considerably better. I've got a cleaner that comes once a week. Keen on this to just run around the other days to collect some dust and dog hair. Hopefully if I'm not relying on it to be my main clean (don't care about mopping function at all) then this might be an Ok option when compared to having nothing currently.

    • +1

You should be stoked mate, we’re the same have the cleaners in once a week but mainly use this to keep all the dust and hairs down

    • I wouldn't recommend either this or the Eufy, which is equally dumb.

Get a refurbished Ozmo 920 from eBay for the same price as the Eufy - it's far superior to both of these.
