Topping up Suica in Apple Wallet

Traveling to Japan in a few months, so attempted to add 1000JPY to a Suica card in Apple Wallet to test it out.

I have a NAB Visa Card, Latitude/28 Degrees Mastercard, and also added my NAB Visa Debit card after the two credit cards failed.

Reading on Reddit implied that Visa doesn’t like the IC system as a competitor, hence why foreign Visa credit cards don’t often work, but Mastercards and Visa debit cards are supposed to work…

I’ve checked that online and overseas transactions are allowed in the NAB app, and I can’t see any restrictions in the Latitude app.

Does anyone have a NAB card successfully used to recharge a Suica ?

If not, I was considering trying Up/Ubank/Revolut (for the fee free withdrawals from ATMs when overseas as well). Any other recommendations welcome…

Update - the 28deg mastercard worked randomly about an hour after I first tried a few times. Super flakey, and doesn’t inspire confidence for when overseas, so still keen to hear of alternatives

  • Worked without issue last month setting up/first top up of a Suica with Up.

  • Worked perfectly with Revolut MasterCard but yeah flaky with a Revolut Visa.

  • Had the same issue with a pasmo, it didn’t work when we first got there and miraculously started working a few days later

  • Worked perfectly using the Citibank Plus Mastercard debit card. Was an absolute breeze loading up the Suica using Apple Wallet.

  • Worked using Westpac Mastercard debit card. Visa was a no-go using multiple cards.

  • I had the same issue with a Nab Visa card.

Alternatively I downloaded the Suica app and was able to top up money via that app.

Downside is it is in Japanese with no language support to change to English .

    Google Translate is my friend.

  • Worked with cba debit MasterCard, didn’t have nab card to try

  • Is there any surcharge or difference in rate when topping up with different bank's mastercard?
