Guess you miss the optus a8 data deal.

    • +3

I can cancel now but was it worth the data breach lol… I got it for $0 after cashback, BWS and tiktok $30 amazon credit.

    • +1

What deal was that? Im with optus, did i miss something?

    • +2

Yeah just cancelled my plan, ended up paying $150 for 4g version.

      • Optus cancellation process is a nightmare. Consultants have no idea how to do it. Need supervisor which they are reluctant to pass onto.

        • I did it over chat and it too like half an hour off and on, and they kept asking if im sure, and if i have family or a friend to take the service over. Got there in the end.

        • Really?

I cancelled my plan last month quite easily over chat. They did try and ask me to continue or move my mobile number over but couldn't beat my Gomo plan.

    • From the comments below, doesn't look like anyone missed out on much

      • +2

I only just missed out, on having my identity completely stolen.

No tablet. Kept all my details. Comprised.

        Thx optus.

  • Good price.

  • Need to upgrade my ageing iPad 9.7 pro. Would this be a good upgrade? Been out of the tech game for a while but the specs,’brand and price look good

    • +10

Would be more of a 'side-grade'

    • +10

I got 2 from last year's deal and just cancel the contract. Changing from iPad (no matter what year version) is not an upgrading, more like driving off a cliff.

      • +7

Are you sure? I feel like this would be much better than my iPad 2 (2011) which I'm still using. Haha

        • +7

Specs wise they are probably similar perfomance but you will have the benefit of Android instead of apple.

        • +11

It would be an upgrade from an iPad 2 since they can't even open a website without the browser crashing and being stuck on iOS 9 prevents you from downloading basically 90% of apps these days. Saying that it's an upgrade isn't saying much when the bar is set that low though.

          • +18

@Agret: I've had my iPad on airplane mode for years now. I decided to take connect it again the other week and guess what Apple did? Actually restricted me from copying files on to the iPad to use. Had to restore from a previous backed up version and disconnect from internet the moment it restored. (Had to try this a few times to get the timing right otherwise same issue.)

            Verdict… (profanity) Apple.

            • @ShinK0: But you see if you ask their customer support, its all about Positioning. Making the customer LIKE it. Positive feedback at any cost!

            • +2

@ShinK0: Craziness like this would not be tolerated in any other industry, yet for Apple it's par for the course

              • @Jackson: And then they get away with it and other companies are like… "Well they've done it and gotten away with it, so we might as well do it too."

    • +5

      A massive downgrade

    • +5

A downgrade despite the sheer age of your iPad. Apps crash on the A8 way more often than my old iPad 9.7 Pro. And you get random keyboard lag on the A8. And even apps themselves, a lot of apps just run weird on Android compared to iPad, even Google's own apps run better on iPad.

Don't let anyone tell you that an iPad is exactly the same as $300 Android only you pay a lot more Apple Tax just for the Apple logo. They aren't talking from experience.

      • +2

So many Android tablets have terrible specs, this one included. It's a shame that the market segment is so heavily dominated by the iPad that manufacturers don't even try anymore. Let's hope the rumoured new Google Pixel tablet will re-ignite some other OEMs into releasing decent tablets.

        • Samsung still make high-end tablets like the S8 Ultra, it's just that the A8 is a mid-range tablet. Most large manufacturers don't compete with the cheap Chinese low-end devices that flood the market, as there is no profit to be made in this segment. Huawei and Xiaomi also make high-end tablets, you just don't commonly see them here as we don't have local suppliers.

      • +3

Thats generally been my opinion as well - iPad is king when it comes to tablets. I'm at a loss though as im looking for something that will be 100% used by the kids to just play their kid games and watch videos.

Minimum spend on an iPad is still basically double what you can pick one of these up for. As much as I want to - it's hard to justify when its just going to get cereal spilt on it anyway. :P

    • +7

Worth if you sail the seas and watch things from SD card. iPads faster elsewhere

    • +1

Not an upgrade. Cheaper Android tablets will offer worse performance and this will have a worse screen. However the advantages it’s cheap to add extra storage and other advantages Android may offer depending on use such as being able to easy emulate old gaming systems or being able to easily stream content for free. Like for instance I use my old android tablet to stream catch up free to air tv (adfree), which is easy to do on Android but have no idea how you could do this on Apple without investing tons of time. I would say for most people it’s best to shell out a bit more for an iPad because of support. My iPad Air 2 for instance still runs 99% of apps out there because it was able to update from 8 all the way to 15. Most Android tablets from that era only got one or two updates and now can’t run lots of applications if being used still.

  • Should be able to price beat at office works in the morning if price doesn't change again.

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/samsung-ga…

    • I got them to price beat it when it was $190

      • +2

Probably fair price for this entry level tablet.

    • Can you price match online? Or do you need to go into a store?

      • You can call them and they do the order on the phone, take payment details etc. You just collect or have it delivered

  • +9

    These are utter garbage.
Got one in the optus deal
    Not worth $150

    • +4

      Terrible screen
      Slow as hell
Made the same mistake with the A7

    • +14

      Then it's not for you

These are pretty basic and not meant to be high performance

    • +3

If you think this Tab is garbage, you clearly haven't used a Tab A 8.0. The A8 is light years ahead of that and functions more than good enough. Yeah, are there better tablets out there, sure but you're going to pay twice the price for it or more.

  • +5

How do these stack up against the Lenovo M10 3rd Gen tablet?

  • +3

Im looking at one of these purely as a kids video player (youtube, disney, netflix, etc).

I noticed a few not so great comments about them but are they fine for basic tablet functions like that? Or is really just a waste of time.

    • +12

Fine for kids and basic use.

      • +4

This are perfect for kids and games like Roblox work great 👍🏽

    • +11

My kids have one and use it just fine. Samsung also has a Kid mode depending on your kids age.
Ive set mine up where I'm admin and their login has restricted apps etc. Very easy to manage. For this price its fine when in a years time the screen has a crack in it :)

Side note, I have an android phone so all my apps and games can be on here easily for them to play too. I use Google Rewards very often and get about $2 a month on it - so buy the kids a few games when it builds up enough - cant recommend that enough.

      • +7

Buy a case with a kickstand on it, a cheap bluetooth game controller and install Retroarch onto the tablet and you can play the old nintendo and sega games on it

        • +5

          Hell yeah. I recently bought a 8bit do Pro 2 - works a charm.

      • Damn, you still get surveys through Google Rewards? I haven't had any come through in a good year or two now :(

        • +1

Clear the stored data for the app, uninstall, reinstall and make sure you have given all the permissions it needs.

          Detailed steps here:

"make sure you grant all of the permissions the app requests, this helps it learn more about you so that you can receive more targeted surveys"
          https://support.google.com/surveys/thread/117716964/not-gett…

        • +2

          Sometimes I make $5 a month lol

          • @Ronnnie: Yeah i definitely have months like that. Sometimes 2 surveys a day getting approx 50-70c. Crazy.
I think its because I tend to use Google maps often - have location history on and am relatively active on it. Its great.

    • It is fine as a basic tablet.

Heck, I'm still using my Galaxy Tab S 10.4, which came out in like 2014 or something…. for YouTube basically. (Mine was a flagship when it came out though)

      • +1

ha yeah, I also use a Galaxy Tab 10.5s although upgraded a few months back to a refurbished 2018 Galaxy Tab S4 for around $260. It may be old but being a flagship device still craps all the A8 in all areas except stuck on Android 10.
Having said that, the A8 isn't that bad and is a very usable device. I just like Amoled displays of the flagship tabs.

      • Upgrade your Tab S to linkagOS 17.1 and pico gapps. You will be pleasantly surprised at the improvement due largely to the freeing up of space. Need at least 3Gb ram free or Tab S slows down significantly. Typing on one now with latest crDroid 17.1 . This old Tab S has an amazing high quality screen, quite the opposite of the Samsung A8 on sale here.

    • +1

They are fine for kids and basic use like web browser, kid games and youtube/netflix. My toddler couldn't care less if the screen is not oled. It all about the content for them.

    • I've had mine for just over a year from the Optus deal. Use for pretty much only streaming and it's fine for that.

    • +1

Yes absolutely fine for kids streaming and light gaming.

  • +3

It’s currently $274.10 ($299 plus $5 delivery less 10% discount) delivered via goodguys on eBay for Ebayplus members using discount code YIPPEE10

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/145062141531?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • +2

Or click and collect for only $ 269.10 😉

      • Too true hehe, so many stores about

      • Wonder if Officeworks will match and beat the ebay price.

        • they don't usually beat ebay prices esp with discount codes

    • +1

Thanks, buddy. I just bought one with a pickup. Used a 3% gift card from Bupa which make the price down to $261. Also, did ShopBack tracking and hopefully get another few cents back.

      • What did you do with Bupa? Im with them as well.

Did you buy a gift card and then use that to pay through the eBay checkout?

        • Yes, buy gift card from Bupa rewards

          • @OMG: I had a look at the eBay checkout and couldn’t work out how you’d apply it? Is the BUPA card just like a debit card?

Just want to make sure it will work so I don’t end wasting money on a gift card I can’t use.

            • +1

@Monty85: No mate. You need to use your credit to purchase an eBay gift card from the Bupa website which is 3% off. It's through the Bupa reward website.

              • @OMG: Damn, ebay listing is finished now. That sucks

  • How are these compared to HP Touchpad? worth the upgrade?

I use it as a photo display thing, and alarm clock but wish I could use Google assistant on it. also like the touchpad wireless charging dock.

would like to use one as a wake up light as well lol

    • +1

How are these compared to HP Touchpad?

This comment probably went well over the head of most people…

  • These are great for kids to watch youtub and play basic games.

    • +1

Good but price is too high …. Is there any good for kids around $100 ??

  • +2

Redmi Pad is way better than this tablet for a fraction more.

    • +1

Recently pulled the trigger on a 6GB RAM model and it's been fantastic.
Feels like a premium product both in the hand and in the very solid performance, with big thanks to the 90hz screen. Have been playing PSX, SNES, 64 emulators. Kingdom Rush is getting a re-play.
I waited and found a decent deal for not much more than $300 on ebay, highly recommend.

  • +1

much better spend on Xiaomi Pad

bought a xiaomi pad 5 not long ago, and the sound is incredible.

      • +1

Our Chinese overlords can have all my personal information, as long as they give me affordable stuff.

    • +1

I’d rather buy this then any of the suggestions

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204282430986?epid=21059621584&ha…

S5e holds up pretty well, great screen, great speakers, and even supports DeX mode. Performance isn’t the best now but will be great for multimedia and mobile gaming.

      • Thanks for this! I ended up buying through your link after watching a comparison between S5e and Tab A8. S5e has better screen, sound, battery life, and has 4G (although it's used). Hope it works out :)

  • after all these negative comments, glad I went with the tab S8 last year (upgrade from tab S2 eofy deal through student samsung site)

  • +2

This is a terrible tablet, bad screen, and SLOW, i went back to my old TAB S 8 years old much better.

  • +1

Yeah this is really bad, don't buy. Got one from the Optus deal mentioned above, still wasn't worth it.

  • +1

    Do not buy!

This tablet even struggles running its own UI without running any other app in the background. Everything is laggy and slow. Face unlock doesn't work most of the time. Screen quality is crap, if you enable eye conform, it makes everything even worse. Tablet casing quality is also crap, mine (soon to be returned) has sharp edges that almost cut your fingers

  • +2

All these people shitting on this… I have a Tab A7 and it's 100% fine for kids watching movies etc.

However, I'd be interested in recommendations for a tablet under $300 that all of you complainers would recommend, noting my crazy requirement for no pre-installed Chinese spyware which rules out OnePlus, Xiaomi and Oppo.

    • +4

I bought the A8 a month ago to take on a vacation overseas to watch downloaded content from all my streamers as I had lots of long plane and train rides. Other than being slow to turn on, I found the apps and video to work really well and screen quality and battery perfectly fine. I also found using chrome fine as well . I don’t know what power all these people want out of it but it worked good for my needs .

      • +3

It's weird - like, what are people doing with their tablets? For actual computing you need… a computer. For gaming a console. Surely tablets are really just for light internet browsing, basic streaming apps, that kind of thing? Anyone with professional needs would get a Surface or similar.

Mind you I ask above for their alternatives and just get downvoted so…

        • +1

Unfortunately, based on your criteria, there isn't much you can even get under $300.

You've ruled out all of the "Chinese" brands (eg xiaomi).

Something close to being good on the other side of $300, might be the

"Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite (2022) WiFi 64GB"
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/743662#:~:text=EXPIRED-,Sa…

But that was $334 at best & assumes you have access to the Samsung EPP + the $50 voucher

          Currently it's $439

          • @nismo: I've ruled out brands with proven, unremoveable, pre-installed spyware. Just a coincidence they all come from the same place…

            Thanks for your other suggestion.

            • @caitsith01: I don't disagree with you, it does limit tablet options under $300 though. Is it really a coincidence? I wouldn't think so 😁

I'm using a Tab S5E and as much as I want something new, something decent is going to cost more than I'm prepared to pay. Waiting for a bargain to come along!

        • Yeah i agree - I've always found it weird people putting a lot of weight on the computer/chip power of tablets. I would assume 99.9% of users just watch videos and browse the net.

        • I kinda use mine for notetaking (at work) and watching youtube videos. Sometimes I use it for light work like writing up an email or writing a document. As I sometimes have to work with PDFs with dozens of pages, I like having something that at least could handle something like that for notetaking and for annotating articles for my PD.

My experience may have been slightly soured with earlier generation Surfaces with overheating issues… I don't like having fans that could accumulate dust over time.
I probably could have gone for FE version of Samsung tablets… Maybe I should get one now I think about it.

        • I had the A7, the previous year model of this one. Just for browsing the web, YouTube, audible. It was slow as hell, and the screen was very washed out with poor motion. It would get stuck when unlocking most of the time, required relock and unlock most times. I persisted for 6 month before snapping it in half.

Maybe I'm used to high end phones and the contrast to this PoS was just too much.

          • @reactor-au: As I say above I have the A7 and I have basically none of those issues. Takes forever to cold start, otherwise is 100% fine for movies/TV/web. And I have a high end phone so I do have a point of reference.

      • +1

My experience with the A8 has been the same. Perfectly fine for media consumption, browsing etc. It's fast enough. Definitely not slow. For the price it's decent.
