Light, fast, great screen, what not to love?!

EDIT: same price from Amazon https://www.amazon.com.au/Zenbook-Mobile-Processor-LPDDR4X-L…

  • +1

Can anybody advise what wattage USBC block is required to power the device?
    Edit 65w

  • +3

    How's the battery life?

    • -3

But it is "PANTONE Validated, Glossy display, 70% less harmful blue light, SGS Eye Care Display", why would you care about battery life on a device meant to be used anywhere and on the move?

  • +1

Hey Guys, how would this one compare to this one? https://www.centrecom.com.au/asus-zenbook-14x-oled-i9-13900h…

I know this one has far better specs and a greater price but is it overkill?

I`m looking for a computer to have multiple Virtual boxes and do PenTest and Digital Forensincs, most of my usage will be IT related application and VMs with Kali Linux etc…

Your input will be greatly appreciated

    • +1

The laptop you've mentioned does seem like overkill. I'd probably try and find out if the laptop that OP has listed can be upgraded to 32GB of RAM as RAM is probably the most important thing when running multiple VM's (in my opinion)

      • Thank you for your input.

What would you think about this one?
        https://www.computeralliance.com.au/asus-vivobook-pro-k6602z…

I called them and they can add an extra 16gb of Ram for $100. Looks interesting but a bit bulkier as I was hoping for something lower than 16''

        • I'm not all that familiar with Asus laptops but that seems ok too. If you're gonna be lugging it around a lot you'd be better off with a lighter laptop but thats entirely up to you.

  • RAM upgradeable?

  • +2

Shame it's a touchscreen OLED. Otherwise seems like a great deal.

    • +3

What's wrong with touchscreen OLED's? It's literally the same technology as your phone.

This comment made me go and have a look in store and it's noticeable.

        • +1

Interesting, I was not aware of this.
I remember seeing the digitizer on the first touchscreen mobile phones but really? In 2023?
After knowing this now, yes, avoid like plague because it's very distracting! Once you see it, you won't unsee it.

          • +1

@1r4n14n: My thoughts exactly! Hadn't realised how obvious it was. Seemed more noticeable on a 1600p screen than a 1200p screen, but like you said, once you see it, it can't be unseen.

            • @Rail Rider95: Interesting observation.
The Asus page suggests the intensity is attenuated by 8.3% with the touch version due to the applied digitiser layer, (and also confirms stylus support).
I find 350 nit or higher on a laptop to be acceptable for me so the reduction in intensity to "just" 550 leaves me with plenty more than I was after anyhow.

        • +1

          yeah, good to know.
I have the UX363EA OLED and cannot see the digitizer. The difference in screen specs is mine is FHD and 60Hz.

I have the 5625U version of this device.

Love the keyboard, display and form factor.

As appealing as the price is, I'd seriously hold off for a non-touch version. I'd even pay more!

        • +2

Just pitching in that I found the same when researching, went to look at a touch OLED in a store and it is really noticeable. I ended up buying a non-touch OLED and it's just beautiful. I wouldn't buy a touch one without seeing one in person first.

@BillyCool: Yea it's best to avoid touch-screen laptops, ergonomically a vertical touch screen doesn't make sense compared to phones and tablets.
Apple pretty much tested this theory which is why they have zero touch screen computers till this day.
They are working on panel technology to provide the best experience so they may introduce it in the future.

            • @Handymancan: Does the anonymous fellow who negged me actually believe there's a touch-screen macbook? Leave it to the iPads, tablets & phones mate.

            • @Handymancan: I have a perfect asusflip book touchscreen non oled, if apple cannot do it, doesn't mean it is impossible.
              Tp501U.

              • @sn809: It's not because Apple can't do it, they don't think it's worth doing at all and have no intention of doing it (so far). They've conducted tests on this matter and found it causes arm fatigue. It's best to stick with tablets, 2 in 1 foldables etc designed with a touch screen fit for purpose and easily manouvreable.

    • Also note that you need to install possible Asus spyware to control the OLED screen:
"Asus responds to the issue of burn-in with an OLED screensaver that can't be disabled. It turns on after 15 minutes. Users can deactivate the screensaver after assessing the risk (warning notice). This is exclusively possible via the personal MyAsus settings. This forces the user to create an account."
      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-ZenBook-14X-OLED-AMD-lapt…

      Still a great deal, though!

      • +1

it can be disabled and you don't need an Asus account.

I was looking at the Asus page:
    https://www.asus.com/laptops/for-home/zenbook/zenbook-14-ole…

    Regarding RAM:

    16GB LPDDR4X on board
Total system memory upgradeable to:16GB I realise this means it is soldered and not upgrade-able
    Supports dual-channel memory.
    8GB LPDDR4X on board
    Total system memory upgradeable to:8GB
    Supports dual-channel memory.

Does this mean there is a SODIMM with 8GB on it that could possibly be switched out with e.g. a 16GB or 32GB one ?

Looking at reviews it would appear it is soldered and not upgradeable.
    https://laptopmedia.com/au/highlights/inside-asus-zenbook-14…
    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-Zenbook-Flip-14-OLED-revi…

I am interested in this display as the above review states there is no PWM and that the display uses DC Dimming (I will go to a shop first though to verify this with the Opple meter).
Like igbargainz, I am also looking for a 32GB or higher amount of memory though (as well as more cores with the Ryzen 7 or 9 etc ) for virtualised environments (but will most likely just end up with a Beelink or Minisforum mini pc to do this).

Cheers for the heads-up op, got Officeworks to price beat over the phone.

  • +1

Highly recommend not to use a higher wattage charger than the included 65W charger. Otherwise RIP system board it won't turn on after the batterys charger. I had this issue with a Asus Zenbook UX435EG-KK232R 14". I used a HP G5 dock which is 100W. Went through two system boards as it killed both of them. After the second system board I got a refund.

    • +2

That is very strange. I would expect it is a fault with the dock, not the fact of using a higher (maximum wattage) power adapter.

  • None at Officeworks WA :(

    • There are 5 in the Perth warehouse.

      • Go to counter at Officeworks ask to get one delivered to store. Price match jbhifi. Done 👍

Used to sell these and the screen burn-in is really bad. We had to swap our entire batch of display models within 3 months because of the burn in. I'm not sure if they have improved it since I was there but there is no in-built OLED care features built into the laptop. Some stores used to not put them on display because of it
