I read 3070 and got excited for a second.

    • +2

I saw that too and was like damn, I'm going to get nothing for my 3070

    • That model name is just so confusing……

  • GT730… recession gaming special

    • +3

Inbuilt GPU could be faster than the GT730?

    • I have an old GTX 750ti that I got on Aliexpress.

Next PC will be a mini PC as I only do light gaming, there's lots of bang for the buck with new mini PCs. I've been building tower PCs since 2000 and I've built my last one.

  • Price without ram and drive?

few more hundreds can get a techfast pc which is heaps more better than these older pcs

and a few more millions could get a ferrari which is heaps more better than those older pcs

What advantages does this have over say a train, which i could also afford?

        • Don't have to park a train either.

        • Might I also turn your attention to a private jet? Sort of a combination fo both form and function. Now you just have to spend your spare change on a bunch of private runways so you can land at your local woolies and servo

    • +1

Obviously, the deal is not for you..

        • +7

Mystery motherboard manufacturer and "bomb has been planted" power supply don't bode well for me. The Optiplex 3070 SFF would make a great emulation box or Plex/NVR server, not everyone wants to play the latest games on their computer.

          • @juzza87:

not everyone wants to play the latest games on their computer.

            +1

that techfast PC is a waste of money for anyone who doesn’t want a gaming PC. And IMHO this DELL will probably outlast that techfast PC built with bargain bin parts.

        • Will candy crush work better on the $799 machine?

        • +3

Not everyone here has an extra $400+ they can just whip up. This isn't whirlpool.

        • +3

You are literally talking about spending more than double the cost, of course you would expect something better.

Clearly not aimed at those who want to spend $800.

        • Lol. Just Pinky today then….

    • +2

Spending much more money in buying higher specced equipment shock!

      Great insights here.

  • They are good as just an office work PC or web browsing. You can't upgrade these or pull the mobo out as they're proprietary. You cant swap out the PSU and there's no room for a decent graphics card.

Be careful before buying but it's price is not bad.

    • -4

this is only good value if you need DELL and SFF..
and only good deal if comparing it to the same DELL model + spec on ebay etc.

      comparing it the prebuilt PC,
these are not good value and as you noted has no good upgrade option

      Gaming PC + Ryzen 5 5500, RTX 3060Ti 8GB = $799
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/776685

      • This is good value if you only have $400 for a 'new' computer.
A $799 computer is of no value at all.

      • +4

dude no one is deciding between a $360 used dell and an $800 brand new gaming machine.

      • +4

The dell is a much better option if I am outfitting a small office on a budget. My clients are using excel, word & chrome, they aren't gaming or editing video/photos. I have saved clients thousands of dollars by outfitting them with an office full of 8th gen+ refurbished machines. They are cheap enough that I can buy a spare & have it sitting in a cupboard so if they ever need another station/have one die I can swap out a replacement machine I keep on hand in 30 seconds instead of ordering a new one.

This sff & a pre-built are two completely different products for completely different use cases.

        • if you can 8th gen in the $2xx is much better deal.

There is hardly any difference between 9th and 8th in benchmark tests
The point is the price is getting close to $400 range which is pointless for what gain?

If people only doing excel, word & chrome, you can even do it on 65xx, 75xx
          which are are heaps cheaper,
Some 65xx deals were like $1XX price range.

          • @pinkybrain: Yeah 8th gen is a much better deal than the 9th gen machines, I usually get them. I do have some 6th & 7th gen machines in offices too but I usually only buy them when they are on an especially good deal. The performance/efficiency jump moving up to 8th gen is worth the price difference unless there is a good special going. There is enough overhead on 8th gen that I can be sure they wont be too slow 3-5 years down the line.

Hell I have some 3rd & 4th gen SFF machines going & they do fine with enough ram & a SSD.

  • Any idea what wattage the PSUs are in these? Would it take a low profile 1050ti?

  • Put a capture card in this and you can make this a dedicated capture machine for you gaming pc :D or anything else you wanna capture.

  • +1

pair this up with a RTX a2000 small profile video card and you will have a 1440p capable gaming machine

    • How much?

        • Hmm.. I'd rather go techfast in that case and take my chances.

        • Not much, just the cost of an entire prebuilt that's runs miles around the sff pc. Not like you're going to be hauling the pc everywhere otherwise you'd get a gaming laptop instead. Refurb sff pcs only hold their value as a general daily task machine, far less value if you want to turn them into gaming machines especially since low power/profile gpus are dead in this day and age.

    • Depends on the power supply. It is most likely 200W.

The existing GT730 is 38W and the a2000 is 70W.

So, it would make this a lottery.

    • I don't get why a2000 has to be so rare, nvidia. We've been begging for this tier of gpu for half a decade now.

      • +2

yes I know :(, it's what the 3050 low profile should've been but we never got it

        • It just sucks cause amd gave up on it too.

I really hope Intel battle master gpus gets decent, they do have an lp line.

          • +3

@Wonderfool: It also shows that it was possible to have a much more powerful card using only 75w but Nvidia held back on it.

If they can produce laptops with rtx 4070 performance, why can't they do for low profiles?

    • +1

Hook this up to a Tesla rocket and you'll have a Tesla rocket with a small PC attached to it

  • Processor released 2018, GPU released 2014. Seems an odd mismatch of parts.

Guessing they may have swapped the original GPU out for the GT 730? Or did Dell actually release this with those components?

Edit: Or seems like it may have had no GPU and just the UHD 630 onboard chipset and the GT 730 was added as an extra? UHD630 seems to perform better than the GT 730 though anyway so discrete GPU might be a waste of time?

    • +2

the GT730 was added in as extra. Not many brands include a Small profile GPU into their SFF

    • +1

Yea the GT 730 is sort of a bonus. But the Intel onboard graphics already quite capable. Will do 4K60 and has capable QuickSync for decoding/accelerating.

    • Dell is famous for salvaging old stock…. A lot of their usb 2 is using the usb 1 connector. Very annoying

  • What's the difference between this and Optiplex 7070 SFF?
I got a 7070 SFF for the same price, same processor, but 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and no GPU
Is there actually any benefit for 7070 vs 3070?

    • I'm no expert but generally you want 8th gen and higher CPU for better video transcoding blah blah blah something something. I guess this 3070 deal gets past that with a dedicated GPU but the 7070 is newer and you can just upgrade ram and ssd as you need. power consumption would be less on the newer models too usually.

      • +2

Intel Quick Sync Video is available as far back as second generation (Sandy Bridge). The 8th gen is what supports Windows 11.

        • That's true, but the actual Quicksync component has many changes between 2nd gen and 9th gen. The real reason why 8th gen onwards is so popular and called out for in terms of transcoding is that the Quicksync in the 8th/9th gen processors support hardware decode/encode of H265 10bit, whereas in previous gens it didn't (noting 7th gen did have decode, but limited encode and no 10bit) and anything less than that was even worse.

It matters a lot if you are going to be doing some Plex/Jellyfin/Tdarr stuff!

          • +1

@holisticboy: Thanks heaps for that info! As an HEVC enjoyer looking into USFF PCs, that's very useful.

    • +2

7070 has more I/O ports and 4 ram slots
3070 only has 2 ram slots

  • +5

i reckon sweet spot on these dell SFF is the Optiplex 7060 with i5 8500 /16GB RAM /256GB NvME is around $250 ( ~$230 with codes) on ebay

    • Link?

      • just keep your eye on ebay and make some offers mate

    • +1

Spot on. Optiplex boxes are awesome as a $200 office workstation, but I wouldn't spend more than about that on one of them.

      • I was able to find 7070 for $330 over the weekend on eBay. $250 is a little ambitious (unless it's missing CPU etc)!

        • i bouhgt one a few weeks back - got a few sellers down to under $275 inc shipping. ebay pretty much always has a code for around $20 off $200 spend. i jagged one for $220 in mint cometic condition with around 2000 hours on the NvME drive + a cheap graphics card and 3 month warranty too boot!

  • Does anyone know how many 3.5" slots are in the chassis?

    • +2

      one

  • +2

I probably have my intel timeline and decades all mixed up again, should I be surprised a 9th gen doesn’t have USB-C?

    • This is the cheapest Optiplex. 5070 and 7070 have USB-C port(s).

I have a 7070 Micro with i5-9500 and it has a front USB-C (also supports a second one with DisplayPort mode as an option).

      • no usb-c kills it for me ……

        • If you don't mind the micro form factor these are fantastic ($395 with eBay plus):

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/195582338787

          • @bio: F this seller. Sold i5-9500, and provided the slower i5-9500T. Then says there no stock of i5-9500 left. Couple days later, he's selling the i5-9500 again.

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13737057/redir

            • @lakers1222: Yeah, that's misleading. I bought it from the same deal and got the i5-9500.

They probably replenish their stock with ex-government computers from time to time. Their customer support is responsive, though. I would contact them if you are still interested in buying one.

        • I'm curious to know what you'd use USB-C for in this type of desktop computer that you can't achieve with the available ports and an adapter.

        • no usb-c kills it for me ……

For what use case ? If you want to connect external drives then the USB 3 ports are just fine for that purpose.

  • +2

The chances are if you work in a corporate medium/large company. Your IT department is probably throwing these out to e-waste bin or donating to 3rd party. I got a few dell 9020 sff a couple of years back from our IT guys. Doesn't hurt to ask.

    • +1

Most are leased, no matter the age they have to return them. It's not up to the IT guys to give them away, unless they are willing to report them as lost and to deal with the security incidents that come with them. Don't think any IT guys would risk it to do you a favour. Larger the organisation the more processes around end of lease equipment.

Cables and peripherals may go to the e-waste bins. Not PCs and laptops.

  • Finally some Gen 9 CPUs coming through.

    • Don't get excited. Trivial increment on 8th only. Worth $5 more maybe :-)

      • they both offer similar results in the tests
what was the point of the 9th gen?

might as well check if there is cheaper 8500T listings

  • +1

    Good as a plex machine?

  • @untech any more Micros coming on the market any time soon?

  • Thanks, triggered

  • Any upgrade price to Win11 Pro ?
