Still a v expensive way of getting points

    • -1

absolutely. but if you're just a couple thousand short on a Europe J redemption, it might be worth it.

      • +6

If you are just need few thousand points
still better value to buy some alcohols in Qantas wines
        https://wine.qantas.com/c/browse-products/page-1?BonusPoints…

or buy some gifcards with bonus everyday rewards points
eg. this week catalogue have prepaid Visa and EFTPOS card with 10x everyday rewards points
        https://dduhxx0oznf63.cloudfront.net/images/salepages/iphone…

        • Thanks for sharing.

I wonder if the EFTPOS cards can be used for cash withdrawal?

I’m interesting in doing this regularly until end of promotion and just withdraw the cash, so I can get Qantas points in a legal way for the same price they’re valued at when people sell them.

  • Out of curiosity - Has anyone ever managed to get classic reward flight from Sydney to London/Sydney to LA/Any other route on First class?

    • +1

Not sure about LA, but the Europe routes are CRAZY popular and as such, hard to come by.

When I did it in J, we ended up getting a cheap flight to Tokyo, then flying from there in J to Dubai, and on to Madrid. And leaving Europe, out of Venice to Doha, and on to KL. All with Qantas points, as on partner/codeshare airlines.

I found it was far easier to find reward seats to other cities in Europe, and once in Europe we just trained/hopped on a cheap flight to London, Amsterdam, Naples etc.

Airport taxes are also weirdly much higher in London, and were substantially lower in Spanish/Italian airports, when I was doing this at least (2018).

      • I've been trying to work a multi city via Tokyo -> London (or EU) on JAL but the Qantas booking system crashes 🙄

It would be an ideal trip 23hrs flight time, great provider, and a stopover in Tokyo is noice.

I assume you just booked yours separately and not a multi-city?

First class? You cant even get Business seats leaving Australia for the vast majority of destinations, especially if you have more than 1 person, definitely out of the question if you have more than 2.

Emirates do have one first-class seat per plane to places like Singapore and Dubai fairly regularly, but taxes are a fortune (almost the cash cost of a Business ticket just in taxes) and only good for solo traveler.

      • Have done Perth to Fiji and Perth to Joburg both in Qantas Biz so yeah not quite so true.

Sure, availability can be easier to find with Velocity points but if you know where to look and keep up to date with points channels, there are the odd biz class tickets to LA or Europe that pop up.

Previously several times but barely available post Covid :(

    • Not F, but we got 3x J Syd-Lax late last year as part of an OWA. It was however through my wife's account as she has QF Gold status.

      • When you say J - do you mean economy ?
Gold status would make big difference. I did read somewhere may be points hack that Gold or above status would have earlier access to reward seats then other brozne/silver status.

        • +3

          F = First
          J = Business
          Y = Economy

    • Yep, I booked last week as I lucked into 2 F seats from Sydney to London, departing next month.

There are 2 F seats from Sydney to Singapore on 19/7 if anyone is keen.

Pre-covid, you had better chance of getting F seats and flew them about half a dozen times in F.

      • Wow great stuff.
Do you have a gold status or higher ?

    • +1

Yes, easy if you are flexible, right now SYD/LAX is available on 13, 14 and 18 June on American Airlines.

    • +1

I managed to get two Business flights on Qantas from Sydney to Dallas earlier this year. I spent probably 2 whole days just looking up different flight combinations. Was only a bronze member at the time

    • Emirates yes. But post covid it's rare (unless from Singapore or KUL), and only 1 ticket at that.

    • I managed to get First from USA to London on QFF for BA flight … never anything from AU unfortunately.

Topping up 12,500 points (10,000 + 2,500 bonus) will cost you $388. You can get the same amount of points for just $270 by buying six bottles of Byron and Harold Protocol Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 from Qantas Wine.

I think the only time it ever makes sense to top-up points is if you're only a thousand or so points shy of being able to book an insane reward flight and can't risk waiting two days for the Qantas Wine points to arrive.

    • So if you wanted say 90,000 points, you could just buy 3 wine sets where they give 30,000 points? There is no limits to how many points you can earn off the same wine sets?

      • Correct. If you’re placing a large order for the first time, call up as they’ll usually be able to throw in some extra points on top. I heard of someone recently who received 11,000 points on top of the 30,000 they received for a $600 wine purchase.

        • Wow that’s awesome. Sweet thanks mate, will call them.

  • +18

Buying wine for the points is a wayyyy better option, this site ranks the best deals and is super handy -> https://www.flightformula.com/tools/qfwine

    • +2

This is my prayers answered. I was going though the site with a spreadsheet trying to work out the best deal!

      Thank you!

    • +2

Had never seen this one before, cheers.

    • +1

      Awesome thanks for showing that!

    • So if you want say 90,000 points, could you just buy 3 wine sets that give 30,000 points each? Or is there a limit of some kind?

      • Nope, no limit! it's just going to cost you a bit!

  • Qantas price is insanely expensive, even with the bonus

  • After 3 months still have not received any points from their last +50% promotion. Have raised dispute with my credit card for refund. Customer service is worst with no follow-up. You have to chase them. But even then, still got zero points. Still waiting for refund.
