  • Who's legitimately buying $1500 phones!?

    • +11

Tim apple said to hold his beer.

      • +1

tim apple says buy these goggles

    • +2

i paid over $2k at launch lol

      thank god for price protection

worth every bit considering i carry 1 device instead of 2

a flagship smart phone is easily over $1k aud these days, the big screen flagships are $1500 at the very least
      a tablet is $500+

this combines both into 1 with stylus support and is "new tech" with the folding technology which you understandably pay a premium for

since i have a 28degrees card with price protection, i effectively only pay $1499 after matching with deals like this 11 months after the fact
(so a years usage but paying EOFY prices instead of launch pricing)

ontop of decently high resale and trade in values + depreciation through work/tax ($600)

it ends up being $900 or less depending if you want to keep it long term or trade it in

for what it is and what you get thats decent "value" which is relative

      • I saw a giant Samsung tablet the other day selling for over $2000.

I didn't even know tablets were made that big nor did I know they got so expensive. I would much rather invest that money in a Lenovo Legion 7.

        • +2

          yeah for sure.

but completely different things right. it was always that the smaller you go in tech, the more expensive (worse value for money) it gets to get that portability

          i.e. Desktops > Laptops > tablets > smartphones
each also has more premium tech

a legion 7 is a completely different computing product category. its got different thermal and portability to the giant tablet, and someone could do work out of that tablet and get the portability they need which they cant get out of a gaming laptop (which they wouldnt value the features of)

also mobile computing chips are getting quite amazing in terms of performance. If you see what the Snapdragon Gen 2 and Apple silicon is capable of. Theyre more powerful than laptops from several years ago. This week apple is baiting developers to port games over to their silicon. so can you just imagine AAA titles optimised and running on fanless ARM silicon

And game streaming is getting more viable and popular. Mobile games are also now above nintendo switch in terms of quality and capability for perspective

so makes sense that a tablet could be priced as someones primary ultra compact computing device.

if you are seeking value for money, this segment of the market is obviously not relevant

        • The ultra is awesome

      • +2

28degrees does the price protection even on EPP prices?

        • Not without committing fraud.

          • @[Deactivated]: whys that.

if you have legitimate access to those sales prices why not

      • Resale on these things are horrible. The fold 3 is worth $1000 brand new and $850 refurb currently. Resell price is around $750, down from $2.5k

        • +1

The fold3 was on sale from launch. unless you didnt care and paid RRP, nobody who stresses over resale value actually paid $2.5k.

Also the apple iphone 13 pro max (flagship around the time of the fold 3) was $2020 and is currently worth around $1k second hand on ebay
so fold 3 lost more value but it depends on when you actually bought it since it was on sale throughout the year, making the depcriation not so bad.
Its also a more niche device so most people who owned it wanted its features not resale value

and iphones hardly ever go on sale beyond apples 10-12% retail margins, esp not at launch

Meanwhile the discounts that samsung offers throughout the year means that you can buy the phone cheaper (unless you enjoy paying RRP), meaning the depreciation is relative and accelerated and not as bad as it appears. you need to compare it differently since iphones are essentially fixed price until September where you get a drop due to new model

whereas samsung starts discounting from day 1 all the way till new model, then slaps on bonus trade in ontop. So the depreciation only really stings for the super early adopters without price protection

      • +2

I'm pretty sure that EPP pricing is not eligible for price protection via 28deg. You've just been lucky that the person who looked at your claims so far has not checked thoroughly enough.

The real 'bargain' for those that actually want these flagship Samsungs on launch date is to just use the 50%-off staff vouchers which are available in the classifieds section each time these phones come out. Will be the same for the Fold 5 next month.

        • +2

i dont think i ever saw such a rule in the T&Cs

The claim form does also ask these questions but none apply:

Q19.Was the item purchased in one of the following ways?
          Used/secondhand/Special order/one of a kind/closing down sale/Floor displays/seconds

Q20.Was the retailers price reduction due to one of the following?
price matching/cash payment condition/special deal involving bundling other items
the answer is always reduced as normal sale

You also need to remember, the device was purchased via EPP in the first place. so if the product and pricing was accessible since purchase, nothing specifial about the subsequent discount under the same conditions makes it exclusive

i even put EPP in the description of where the discount was, they havent cared

forgot about those staff vouchers, need to keep an eye out but last few times i checked the sellers wanted a premium that negated the discount significantly, or none were available or there was some crackdown or the deal wasnt on the model desired. Given it was so inconsistent, the price protection was easier

    • Apple Pro Max over $2K for 256GB and sell like crazy so there are too many people willing to spend

    • I bought one recently for 1100$ on Ebay (probably overpaid going by some of these comments.. - still in the return period, I suppose?). This is the phone that got me to switch from iPhone (a mini, if you'd believe it) and it's been pretty good.

I like carrying around an iPad for browsing, and this does a pretty great job of completely replacing it - and it fits in my pocket!

If any phone is worth spending up on, these foldables seem like it - they actually give you something that you otherwise couldn't obtain from a regular slab phone.

  • Any deals on S23 Ultra on Education Portal?

    • its $1559 for 256gb on EPP (about 20% off i think)
      cant see Education portal sorry

    • $1559.20 with free watch 4

pardon the hdr. too lazy to turn off

  • +4

Fold 5 is being announced late July. Worth waiting, fold 4 should drop even more.

    • +4

      yeah agree

shame that leaks suggest samsung have done Fk all to compete with other foldables

  • Lol ridiculous price considering Fold 5 is about a month away.

    • +2

its still useful for people who want to claim price protection lol

  • I recently bought a pair on Samsung website: $1,379.47 for 512GB and $1,257.87 for 256GB, after trade-in bonus, $50 newsletter + 10% loyalty coupon. They also ran an offer for free Watch 4 and sent me 2 Watch 4 Classic. That takes the cost to $1.1k for 512GB and $1k for 256GB so not bad even if Fold 5 is only a few months away.

    • thats pretty good

what did you have to trade in

  • I agree that at this price, it is not quite value for money, compared to the jb-hifi deal a few weeks ago. Heck, if anyone's based in SA, I am letting go of mine (512GB) at 800ish, upgraded to S23 Ultra.

    • How is the experience with S23 Ultra? I have seen friend's S21 Ultra which is quite bulky compared to S23, though bigger size.

      • +1

No complaints so fair, as I have had used a few generations of Galaxy notes in the past, hence am quite accustomed to the size.

  • +3

There is less inovation and competition in prices since the US killed of Huawei for sure.

  • +1

Fold4 was $645.76 after trade in, bonus, loyalty code, signup voucher and samsung massive discount on April 23. Best ever deal iML , big circle on my 2023 calendar

    • damn tahts epic deal howd i miss that

whats the base price before the bonuses etc do you know?

what kind of phone did they want to get the trade in

      • I traded in flip4 from previous trade in happened few weeks before fold4 trade in. The massive deal came from samsung discounting aroujd $1000 of ridiculous RRP anyway.

    • +1

About the trading in program.. They tried charging me $60 for late fee but I had no funds in my Revolut account LOL, I do want to pay for it because I don’t want to deal with being bad credited. After that I hope they’re done with charging me.

  • How to use the trade in bonus and does it mean it bring the price down further to $1199.40 for 256gb?
