  • Dumb question - do these come painted?

    • +15

      Not dumb at all.

They're not painted, but made of coloured plastic. For the most part the colours are correct, with more recent kits and higher grades being more colour correct. Generally incorrectly coloured parts or parts which need a shine etc have stickers to correct them. This kit as a mg should be nearly completely correct given its grade, but modern hg kits (the most common grade) are almost entirely colour correct anyway. The most recent hg kit i built (aeriel) was almost entirely correct sans two red strips on the shoulders and some parts which need to shine.

For what it's worth, no glue is required either.

Not OP, but thank you for the write-up! Appreciate it :-)

      • Yep thanks for that. As a model airplane collector in the past and sort of jumping back in to the hobby, I see that Bandai basically seem to make the best kit parts without much work. I had no idea where Gundam fit in, and with all the grades of kits its pretty bloody confusing for a newbie. Not unlike Transformers even.

        • I used to make model planes etc. The bandai stuff is just leaps and bounds better. Can't possibly go back. Even the hg (lowest common grade) is still miles better than the kits I used to make.

The grades are easy. The most common grades are:

Hg - 1/144 - the "standard" kit, largest variety, cheap as chips
Rg - 1/144 with high complexity, many more pieces, more correct colours and an inner frame, more detail, newer range
Mg - 1/100 - inner frame, better colours, has some cool villains and non protagonists

Really i just stick with hg and rg. Rg is a clear upgrade and much better but largely limited to protagonist mobile suits only. The new hg are starting to heavily intrude into the rg territory though. Rg vs mg is pretty similar and is mostly a matter of which size you want.

Me: “Mum, can I get Gundam Kit?”

Mum: “We’ve got Gundam Kits at home”

LOL. You're not even selling the same thing, which is a model kit.

    • +1

      hahahahahahah LMFAO

  • Great price for a new release. Probably cheapest within Australia.

  • Thanks, got one.

  • I’ve never done one of these before. Is this a good one to start on as a complete newbie? I do lots of Lego Technic build but don’t know if anything from that is transferable to this.

    • +1

Can you follow instructions while clipping plastic parts cleanly out of their runners? Do you have reasonable organization skills to manage ~1000 parts over the course of a couple dozen hours?

      If so, you got this!

      • Lol, I’m going to sound like such a dork but what you described actually sounds fun to me. I love a slow and steady grind towards a final outcome. I’m going to take the plunge!

        • +2

It is fun! Join the club! Get a tablet (or screen) and put something on while you work on it. Bliss!

    • +1

They'll be different but if you've done lego technics, I think you'll enjoy it.

      • Thanks heaps for the perspective ! 😁

    • +1

Does not matter newbie or not, you always start from something!

This one in the OP is Master Grade (MG) in 1:100 scale. If you are not sure i suggest trying High Grade (HG) they are often smaller at 1:144 with less parts, less building steps and about half the price.

      • Thanks for the tip. Yeah, I tried buying from the previous recent deals but couldn’t get to the JPN pricing. Will try again.

  • It does transform to the riderwave, which is very cool!!

Built my first Gundam from another deal, and was very pleased with the building process and end result - this is tempting as it will be a bit bigger in size!

My wife loves building these things

  • damn this is a great price………. must……… resist……..

  • Must resist… No more spare money for hobbies

  • RG nu is $53 also.

    • Awesome kit. One of the best rg kits and 1/144 scale gunpla. Only downside is that it will spoil other kits for you.

    • Do you have a link to this one?

      • Sorry it's back to full price.

Every day or so I'll look up some RG/MG gunpla and use the "customers also viewed" section at the bottom to see if there's anything cheap.

You can go this Amazon Japan Link on desktop (or request for desktop site on mobile) to search for stuff sold by Amazon Japan. The RG Nu Gundam pops up sometimes while I was refreshing for the Ariel full mechanics.
I missed out when then HG sets were sub $20 after sitting on the fence for a while..

          So far I have bought
          RG Nu Gundam $52.61
          MG Gundam Barbatos $63.69
          RG Gundam Unicorn $49.25
          Gundam Ariel Full Mechanics $54.10
          Godhand SPN-120 Nipper $52.54

I haven’t build a gunpla before so this all very new!

          • @Kurusawa: I picked up godhand today, so so so much better experience using them.

I recommend a glass file if you can find a cheap one, with GH and a few passes prices are clean as.

Reckon I'll keep my eye out for MG Barbados.

  • If anyone has a sudden and inexplicable urge to get them, you can now buy lfrifth ur and thorn as they're back in stock, as well as most of the other main g.witch gunpla (eg pharact and lfrith).

    Shows as $129 for me?

    • Same, I can't get the Amazon Japan trick to work reliably.

  • +1

got a 1/144 for my son, he really likes it
it is way better than transformer, thats what he said and I am happy too since it is way cheaper than transformer ( 1/144 only costs about 20 dollars), and it give him a few hours fun

It changed to delivery date pending from estimated 22-29th junes, is that the same for everyone else or have people received theirs yet?
