Newcastle CBD - Chinese Room Rentals

Hi All,

Out of ideas for this. Have a relative of a friend that is studying in Newcastle. There are Chinese papers in Sydney that have private rentals but it looks like it does not cover Newcastle.

Anyone in the Newcastle area know if there is something similar?

Like the ones where they cram 69 international students into a 2 bed 1 bath unit in Sydney cbd?

      69? Nice

    • Ps op do ya swear you’re not part of the ATO taskforce ?

    • More like 1 or 2 roommates

Locanto? Some adverts even offer free accommodation for female students.

I can't work out why you'd pay good money to come to AUS to get a degree and (I assume) improve English skills and then live with / hang out with people who will probably speak their mother tongue rather than English.

So many International Students on the train between Redfern & Parramatta with poor english skills that spend the whole train trip in a group speaking their mother tongue.

I'd be very annoyed if i was the parent paying full fees for that.

For heaps of these students it's probs step one to future citizenship.
      And then Lib party membership.
Before you know dodgy AEC lookalike how to vote signs in front of the polling booth.
      (Dig at the Libs BTW)

Speaking English here isn't compulsory. Why bother if you don't need or intend to use it going fwd?

      • They just got here without any support and first time being away from their family. They would be better off having people they can communicate with. It is not like they will not be using English at their uni?

Their plan is to go back & not stay in Australia so don’t know where all these remarks are coming from.

They aren’t coming here to study. They come here to live.

Maybe they should study our renowned baby formula formulas?

You sound like the type that has never lived overseas in a non-English speaking country. But yeah be smug and judge others.

It is funny how they don’t see how hypocritical some people here are. How many of you have families that immigrated here? Lol

Short answer is everyone who is not indigenous, isn't it?

        • How many of you have families that immigrated here?

Mum's family came out from Sicily in 1910.

Nonna, My great grandmother poke passable english for a housewife that was bringing up 9 kids in a 2 bedroom house.

Nonno spoke great English as (what a shock) he owned a fruit shop.

Well that's where you went wrong. You think people come over and study in Australia to improve their English skills? That's an assumption without any substance.

Many international students have already studied English anyway before studying in Aus.

It can be a very lonely position being an international student with language and cultural barriers. Things we take for granted like knowing slang, sarcasm, dry humour or that episode of The Simpsons where homer gets high from licking a frog. Those things take years and time.

Then don't get me started on the seperation from loved ones, friends, potentially your hobbies and things that define you and have shaped your identity until this point. It's not as simple as just calling. Time differences, cost, missed occassions etc.

Then you may look different, sound different, you aren't necessarily an introvert but maybe you just want to try and find a spot that you fit in in your new normal.

Then consider it can be difficult as an adult to branch out and find new friends and friendship groups, let alone an adult international student.

If you were a parent paying for your kid to study in Aus, i don't think you'd give 2 shits what language they were speaking. If anything I believe you're wrong. You'd want your kids around people similar to you in the hopes that your child would be safe and relatively comfortable while you weren't there to keep them on the path.

I think you'd find that if you were an international student in a country with so many differences including language and culture, you'd be on the train trip in a group speaking your mother tongue. Commonality connects people.

      • Many international students have already studied English anyway before studying in Aus.

For many, it appears they wasted their money. Poor buggers.

  • Try Jesmond. Like sardines, everywhere.

  • These places are cash only. As such they only advertise on Chinese platforms to avoid the ATO. Check red book, WeChat etc.

    • Thanks, will get them to check, been looking at flatmates.com.au and thought maybe there was something similar

  • The uni will have some sort of service to help out. They deal with a lot of OS students and need to accomodate them.

    • Great thank you. Will give the uni a ring today and see what they have. I know they are on the waiting list for student accommodation but they are studying at a different campus so it is not a great option either.

  • I presume it would be The University of Newcastle? Maybe check out existing Chinese student association on the campus and see whether people can offer help? A quick search on Newcastle Uni clubs yields this although from their website it is not exclusively UoN.

    • Yes and thank you. I did not think to check if they had one!

  • I'd recommend checking out /r/newcastle , search through the posts there and put your own post up if you don't find what you're looking for. It's a pretty active community of helpful people.
