350$ for a jacket. Tell em they are dreaming

    • +1

Dan's look does not not cheap

  • +2

Get macpac for <$100 on sale.
    This is not a bargain

    • I doubt Macpac is real down like this jacket (Filling: 85% Down & 15% Waterfowl Feathers)

      • +3

Down of the quality used in this jacket is cheap, and it’s essentially a fashion piece.

The down used here is only slightly better than the real down in the Macpac/Kathmandu/Uniqlo equivalent for a third of the price, and the difference is going to be unnoticeable to the average buyer who’s going to be wearing this to drive to the local cafe.

If you want something of actual quality I’d recommend Arcteryx or Patagonia.

        • It's probably even below UNIQLO quality now.

UNIQLO used to be around 640 fill power of mostly duck but I believe they improved it a few years ago.

North face is either 650 or 700 fill.

Most likely a bit better but doubtful it's goose down and certainly not $350 worth.

      • Macpac's jackets are 80/20 duck down/feather, not synthetic. Not quite as down heavy and only 600 loft but like others have said - a third of the price.

    • -6

Not even close but sure keep buying your Macpacs

      Username checks out

  • I rather save a bit more, and buy Moorer for that money. At least I don't look like a walking billboard.

  • +1

    Why is it retro?

    • shades of Dan Andrews in the pandemic years?? ;-)

  • Wohooo…. 10.50 off for 3-4 months…..
    Thanks for the ads

      with canned food?

      • Do you eat can food?

        • yes

          • @pr0o: So what is the issue of eating can food?

            • @HolyCr4p: it's unhealthy bro

              • @pr0o: So it is unhealthy for you as well ?

                • +2

@HolyCr4p: it's for everyone - canned food aint racist

  • So many people don't appreciate quality gear. This will last years and is actually down, not polyester like other stuff.

    • This comment got me into a rabbit hole of finding out what is in these jackets!

    • Polyester being plastic will out live goose/duck fluff by several hundred years.

    • Except for people who respect the welfare of animals and don't want to wear their fur to keep them warm when there's many other humane options.

  • +1

Any deals on the more contemporary Numptee model

  • Simiar to Macpac, but its price is much more affordable.

  • +6

I have one of these that I bought on sale many years ago but hardly worn it as it’s so damn warm. Definitely a world of difference between real down and polyester fill.

    • +4

Yes because there's very few places in Australia where this kind of jacket is necessary, and those places where it would be, people would by more legit gear than the north face.

      • +1

        Melbourne is very cold

    • Exaxtly this.
You will sweat no matter how cold the weather is.

  • +5

No wonder interest rate keep going up, people spend 350 on a jacket

  • +7

OzBargain, where $350 is too much for a Jacket but $500 is a steal for a pair of RM Gumboots

Jokes aside, can attest to the quality of this jacket, bought one a couple years ago on sale, before the price hikes for ~$280

i was able to get this for 240 a couple years ago and it lives up to the hype, warm and light for its size

  • +2

It doesn't even look good on the model!

  • +1

+1 this jacket is amazing and well worth the $300 I paid 2 winters ago, and having experienced all three brands, Kathmandu and Macpac don't hold a candle to its warmth

    Goose down >>> duck down

There's a reason why all three brands have similar RRPs but only one of them actually manages to maintain its price and not go on sale 300 days a year.

    • +1

Duck and goose down perform the same for the same fill power. Even with lower fill power you only need a few more grams of down to get the same loft, and therefore the same warmth. Those few grams might matter if you’re climbing mountains, but the average user won’t even notice.

You often see casual users getting excited about how “warm” they perceive a jacket to be, but this is only because they don’t understand that warmth is easy to achieve: all you need to do is stuff it with more cheap synthetic insulation or cheap down. In reality, when you buy a better insulating piece you’re paying for technical features like minimal weight, mobility, packability, ability to insulate when wet, or ability to vent moisture and heat when active (for example, the Summit series is TNF’s technical line).

The Nuptse is just a fashion piece which performs the same as the Kathmandu or Macpac equivalent, and exists only to increase TNF’s profit margins by exploiting the so-called ‘hypebeast’ market, who are the reason why they can maintain those high prices.

  • +1

Man…..I rather save a little bit more and buy Patagonia Down Jacket, Lululemon Down Jacket, or Arc'teryx Cerium. If I really want a high end down jacket, I just get Canada Goose.

    • Even if you want North Face jackets for the brand, get the summit series gear

But yeah, if you want warmth Canada Goose

    • Do you know if Australia has an authorised Canada Goose retail store?

      • +1

The only one I know is Sneakerboy. A good place to try out for size. I would wait till Farfetch or Mr porter/net-a-porter has a promotion to buy. They sometimes give maybe a 10% discount (default since you just sign up for email and use) or more.

        • Thanks appreciate the info! Will check it out

    • I love Lululemon products but never thought it would be used in the same sentence as Patagonia or arcteryx. :)

I have Patagonia Sweater which is very good but should have bought the hoody. My next purchase will be arcteryx but need to lose some weight around the tummy to fit into it.

Seriously if you live in Sydney is not that cold.

    • Tell that to Sydney who wear these jackets with shorts, socks, and slides

      • They would be sweating.

Two years hunt for a puffer that looks like a million of other puffers

    • +1

Not everything looks good on me unfortunately. This just happened to be one of those items

      • Thank you so much for sharing. I am on the same situation and just bought it right away after seeing your post!

        • Not a problem!

Just wanted to share a deal that I found that could help others. Didn’t expect so much mixed responses, but each to their own!

      • Did you try Superdry, they usually have a good fit

        • Thanks for the suggestion!

I already have a superdry jacket and it’s bit of a different vibe. Fit is definitely snug but I am on the more muscular spectrum

  • +1

The coupon code works for RM Williams boots too. This makes it a great deal.

  • Been on the hunt for this jacket for the last 2 years

I get this is OzB and all, but that's no way to live your life if you really are eager to buy something and it's on your mind for that extended period of time. I anticipate to be downvoted to hell.

    • On the hunt would be wrong to say but just wanted to take my money further where possible 👊

  • Meh, I prefer HH.

  • +1

I picked up one of these at an op shop lmao

    • That sounds like an amazing find. Please note there are lots of counterfeit items on the market due to the popular nature of this product. I personally, wouldn’t take the risk of doing such a purchase from a non authorised seller.

      • -3

Oh noes. What if my $3 puffer jacket is a counterfeit!!!???

I'm fairly certain it's not but I'd take the chance

  • Mid tier jacket according this 'tier list'

    • Lmfao imagine getting your fashion advice from news.com

Do you have the capacity to think for yourself?

  • You'd have to be Nuptse to think $350 is a bargain for this. (thank you I'll show myself out)
