Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 (13.5", Ryzen R5, 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM) - $1349 + $9 Delivery ($0 C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

460

Good deal so worth sharing.

Sure this is the Surface 4, not the 5 but there's not much difference in my opinion. This is the cheapest Surface going with 16gb of Ram which makes the Surface a much better performer. It's also the full metal one, not the carpet-style keyboard one.

UBER delivery was $11 so nearly the same as standard & it arrived within the hour.

The Microsoft store has the same model on sale for $200 more & most stores are still listing this model at north of $1,500.

There are reviews out there saying why the Surface 4 is better than the Surface 5.

    https://www.laptopmag.com/news/the-surface-laptop-5-is-actua…

The Intel based Surface 5 is slower, and has worse battery life than the AMD Ryzen based Surface 4 by about 3hrs.

"If you want a new 15-inch laptop, you'd be shooting yourself in the foot if you purchased the new Surface Laptop 5 over the AMD-based Surface Laptop 4. Its regression cannot be overlooked."

    • but isn't this the 13inch model not the 15 inch?

      • They're basically the same performance .. heck if you look at the insides I suspect they share the motherboard.

  • got 3 and 4s , pretty good, can recommend. I will prob upgrade next financial year assuming we see a 6 soon

Can recommend this laptop. I have this exact model and it’s great. Quality is good, battery life is surprisingly good for a Windows laptop and the power is there when you need it.

Oh actually, this is one annoying audio delay issue that I’m yet to work out. Occurs with Bluetooth devices, there is a delay before the audio starts playing, doesn’t get out of sync, but video plays with no audio for a few seconds.

Just be aware there are zero local support options for MS laptops in Australia, outside of the MS store in Sydney.
If something is awry, it's off to Manilla etc. and into tech support script hell.
For the money you pay- never again.
    Dell FTW!

Hmmm, I've never had an issue. We have 30+ at work, any issue they just replace it with a new one & they even send the new one and let us send the old one back in the box (for free).

That was my experience as well (though 10 years ago with a surface 3 pro) - I dropped it in a laptop bag soon after getting it and they replaced the cracked screen quickly - and then a little later sent me some free pen tips when I contacted to ask about where to get them.

    • My Laptop 4 stopped working just 1 month after the warranty expired, it just didn't turn on anymore.

The online process to lodge a repair/warranty claim was automated and asked to pay ~$900 to fix the laptop (if I remember correctly).

I then thought that I have to speak to a human before I go to Fair Trading so I tried calling them for few times and didn't get anyone to answer the phone. Then went to the Sydney store in person and they scheduled an appointment where they had a quick look to determine it doesn't boot. They didn't even look inside or anything to see if there were water damage or anything (I don't shower with my computer's ;).

Then techperson then said they'll swap it to the same spec'd Laptop 5.

Quite happy with the result, but honestly someone should have answered the phone lol

What laptop would you recommend that is detachable and can be also used as a tablet? Would it be the Surface Pro?

    • Surfacebook 3, Surface Pro, both great devices.

Otherwise go the Surface Laptop Studio, also a superior device and costs more.

    • Dell have a nice looking XPS detachable, but it's hard to overlook the Surface on sale.

got this one one year ago (21/05/2022) at jb , $1 cheaper .. good machine but 1 year old hardware for the same price.. not a deal

  • I have this exact model I would like to sell, what can I get second hand? Small scratch on the body, only cosmetic

    • Best to check facebook marketplace and gumtree. But only take cash, too many scams out there and will save you a lot of time.

  • 256GB non-upgradable soldered storage sucks

    • +1

But this is upgradable if you open it up!

That would suck.. but this just pops out lmao.

Keep it mind that it's a smaller M2 drive so there's less choices but easy enough to replace.

      • I think 2230 M.2 drives are getting more readily available these days, since steam decks etc use them.

        • Oh yeah they're not super rare or anything, just means you can't use a spare desktop one.

got mine last year for 1188

    Still overpriced

    • Just because you got cheaper (congratulations) does not mean it's overpriced at this price

      • yes it does, if they can price it lower last year and then a newer model comes out and they increase the price then its overpriced

Surface laptop 4 is a generation behind surface laptop 5, so factor that into your consideration.

    • +1

Refer to my first post where the Surface 5 has worse performance and battery life than the Surface 4, because the Intel 12th i7 gen CPU is inferior to the previous generation AMD Ryzen 7 CPU in the Surface 4.

      • I only said it's a generation behind the SP5.

  • Paid $1082.05 back in October last year. I use it everyday for work and hasn't skipped a beat. Battery is decent and it is very quiet as well.

  • Which r5 processor is this?

  • Is it easy to upgrade it's ram and ssd?

    • Can't update ram. Can upgrade SSD.

    • SSD is a moderate pain to open up, ram is soldered.
