UPDATE: Amazon AU somehow has "sold out" (???) its preorder listing of the Wing Zero EW, or at least taken down, as the seller is no longer Amazon AU. Hence you may see the $43.19 pricing from other sellers.

There are a lot of Gunpla (a term directly transliterating the japanese term for Gundam Plastic Models) deals lately. Preorders mean it'll satisfy your FOMO but if you have buyer's regret later (due to whether already too many to deal with or costs getting out of hand), just cancel away, you won't be charged until it ships (although sometimes it might come back in stock before the quoted date).

No idea whether the Wing Gundam Zero EW (https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08VGGC4DS?smid=ANEGB3WVEVKZB) is the lowest price, but <$40 for a RG (Real Grade) seems to be decent being delivered in/to AU. Check 3camels for price history. Amazon page claims release date to be November 24, 2023 for the Wing Zero EW.

If the webpage images are to be believed, the kit seems to have the number 0194380, released in 2014.

Found a review by someone on the internet: http://elementalcheese.blogspot.com/2015/03/gunpla-review-rg…

$76.49 for the Freedom Ver 2.0 MG (Master Grade), number 0204883 released back in 2016: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08XW97RRT

UPDATE: Just realised FrontlineHobbies is selling the Freedom kit at the same price, if you can pick up locally in its NSW location: https://www.frontlinehobbies.com.au/bandai-gundam-mg-1-100-f…

Justice (also MG) is at slightly higher price at $81.68 so while it seems to be the lowest price at the moment, but probably not amazing bargain price: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09NDKWDMX .

October 20, 2023 is the release dates for the Freedom and Justice.

Another RG kit that I was able to find at $40 mark is RX-78-2 at $40.03$36.88 from Amazon JP via AU: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08VXCYTYG/ref=mp_s_a_1_142?cri… , but considering the recent MG of it at $58.87, the $40 RG isn't amazingly priced.

Out of interest, are Gundam cheaper to buy in-store in Japan? Im back there in August (assuming they are easily found in Akihabara)?

    • +1

Not sure about Japan, but yes when I was in Hong Kong.

    • +7

Yes, it is often cheaper to buy them in Japan (depending the exchange rate when you travel to Japan).

But the main problem is the size of their boxes and how to carry them back from Japan without damages. Most of the time need to sacrifice a large amount of luggage space to bring back Gunpla that need assembly.

MetalBuild and some hard-to-find kits are better ones to buy from Japan. Otherwise, it is still better to buy them from Amazon, even though they might be 5%-15% more expensive than Japan.

      • +1

that's a rookie mistake there, go find a box and ship them back, that's what I did will all my souvenirs from japan LOL

        • Isn't postage from Japan to Aus expensive tho?

          • @azngamer: suprisingly not really. then again i buy the LE u cannot get over here at all :P

        • In which case you're not paying that much more than buying it here or online. Outside of limited edition, there'd be no real point and you'd have spent a while bunch of time buying and shipping while on holiday.

          • @wackedupwacko: the shipping back to aus is cheaper than the markup they have here. that being said shopping from HLJ works out to be cheaper than retail here. so yea I hardly buy kits in-store unless I am that desperate.

      • i had to open and flat pack a lot of boxes after getting all excited buying too many boxes from Gundam Base
it was only a few hours before we had to be at the aiport, but with time i would defiantly get a bigger box and pay for it to be posted back.

    • +4

      Yes, significantly.

Radio Kaikan building has: Ani Ani and Yellow Submarine both tons new kits below RRP.

Madarake has 2nd hand kits which are in 90%-99% new condition for cheap, including kits you can't buy new anymore and special editions. Check website, Aki store is "Complex"

Bic Camera and Yodabashi (and maybe Labi, I didnt check) sell all current kits.

Suyugaya has slightly more expensive 2nd hand kids than Madarake but way more selection in store. Make sure you goto the Kit store not the Anime merch store. Wedsite has most kits.

Also make the trip to Gundam Base at Odaiba for RRP range and a few exclusive recolours.

    • +1

I have no idea lol, so ask Google it was…and reddit seems to suggest yes it can be ~5-15% cheaper than RRP depending on the retailer (or even cheaper on sale/clearances).

Also if you are in Japan as a foreigner, you can claim the GST (or whatever they call it in Japan) back.

Although a random comment I read makes a good point: Not how much the prices are, but how many can you take back? So, I hope you can bring an extra luggage case with you haha. Good luck!

    • +4

Far cheaper. Gundam are usually sold below rrp in japan, they're actually really quite cheap. Unfortunately due to postage being able to buy at anything near rrp is mostly a pipedream, at least before amazon jp became available. Big bulky delicate boxes is not great for reasonably shipping fees.

    • Thanks everyone; this really helps - especially the specific stores. And yes, will be carrying some extra luggage!

    • They are much cheaper in Japan/China. Many Gunpla sells for around 60% price in Japan compared with in Australia.

    • +2

@RDY4ME much cheaper (50% cheaper even, and our currency is so strong you'll feel guilty for getting it so cheap vs us plebs stuck in AUS),i recommend the gundam base TOKYO (DIVER CITY TOKYO PLAZA) for the most stock, and gundam factory YOKOHAMA not for stock but to visit the giant gundam before it goes away. The reason I say YOKOHAMA isnt the best place for the stock is because store has very limited stock due to space constraints and their goal is showcasing the giant gundam not selling products VS the Gundam base TOKYO which not only has a good amount of stock but includes everything the YOKOHAMA store has (though sometimes YOKOHAMA does stock rare gunpla it sells out quick). I visited both stores in March 2023, and theres a lot of limited edition gunpla you can get for RRP (TOKYO STORE), the ones that others scalp and sell for 2-3x profit. i recommend loading up on the limited edition ones especially if you like it. Ill be going back and stocking up on those for sure.

    • +1

Unrelated but goodluck with their summer, it's pretty brutal compared to Australia!

    • +1

in addition to the above comments, the weak yen and asking for tax-free receipt (you'll need to show your passport) brings it down even further if you're buying it in person

    • +1

seems like it, my brother came back from Japan with a dozen Master-grades despite not being into gunpla because it was so cheap. he figured it'd be a low investment hobby to take up his time. it's just sitting in the garage collecting dust at the moment.

    • +1

      Yes and no.
Akihabara is actually not cheaper overall.
There might be one model going for a steal to get people in the door and that's it.

My best tip is that Yodoboshi Camera is kind of the cheapest they typically have maybe 5 on prominent sale and rotate the sale. This can be checked via the website https://www.yodobashi.com/

Labi (Yamada) have a few discount models on sale and do the same.
      https://www.yamada-denkiweb.com/search/Gunpla/?category=all&…

I can't remember BIC camera but maybe not too much there on a discount https://www.biccamera.com/bc/category/?q=Gundam

For all the trawling through the stores, I found it's time consuming and hit and miss.
Although it's crazy fun the first time I went, 10 hours of straight shopping is something I don't think I have the stamina for.

I'd just get an Amazon.jp account and get it delivered. Sign up for prime trial.

    • significantly cheaper, I'd say at least half for the kits I was looking at

    • +1

Adding to what everyone else has said: be aware pre-2022 advice may be outdated with respect to prices or especially stock, since the hobby's demand skyrocketed without a corresponding increase in production. Also, Gundam Base (at least in Odaiba) don't do tax-free/TRS, so save that spot for the fancy exclusive kits.

    • Gunpla (at least reasonably popular kits) is not easily found in Japan atm. Take the aerial that started this whole thing on OzB. I saw it for a grand total of 25mins in akihabara yodobashi when they brought out their stock for a special display for G-witch before it was wiped clean and by the end of the day they had hardly any stock left that wasn't dud old stock.

Stuff gets sold out very quickly right now.

  • +3

These look impressive on the screen. But the 1/144 I have to admit was a little underwhelming in terms of size lol.

Still fun to build and I'll buy more. I think I just had this dream of a giant Gundam on my desk lol. I read the height as 30cm tall - but thats the box length lol

    • +1

Agreed, put together a 1/144 over a weekend and it was painful. The stickers were the worst part, there were these circles just 1 millimetre small and they had to go into a recessed hole.

I looked it up and it seems after 1/100 (~19cm), there's a 1/60 which is ~31cm. Unfortunately they seem to be priced in the hundreds.

      • +1

Yeah some of the stickers can be painful. A scalpel or tweezers can really help there. And 1/60 is PG grade with tons of gimmicks, and moving parts which is why they're so expensive. Generally MG is the sweet spot between price and size and features.

        • Seems like it! Just found this after I commented: https://www.gundamplanet.com/grade-comparison

God damn, so the 1/144 that I put together was only a 2/5 in terms of difficulty…

          • +2

@ChillBro: RG is where the challenge at. Parts are tiny.
            But the engineering’s pretty incredible.
Some of the newer RGs (Nu, Unicorn etc.) are practically MGs in terms of complexity and functions, just in smaller scale and hence the extra difficulty.

            • @zonra: That's really cool to know but

              Parts are tiny.

I'm probably not going to get anymore because of this. I don't know what kind of mini elf people they make these for but then again maybe I'm just not dedicated enough since I don't watch the anime lol

              • @ChillBro: I don’t watch the series either, just enjoy model building.
I started the hobby building just RGs, and while they were fascinating to build, the tiny parts kinda hinder enjoyment somewhat. Picked up some HGs from the recent posts and I must say they’re a lot less stressful and quicker to build, the result isn’t as nice though. MGs seems to offer the best of both worlds.

  • +1

It's been between $32-$38 for the last 3-ish weeks.

Would have picked it up if I didn't get MG Ver Ka.

Almost guaranteed to suffer from Floppy Early Real Grade Syndrome

    • Thanks for the info. And ah, I can't believe I forgot the 3camels for price history.

    • yeah would avoid rgs before tallgeese, maybe except for the unicorns given that the mg version are so bad. And the two mk-iis is pretty well reviewed.

    • Ye same I'll bite if it was wing ver ka I heard this version isn't that great, good looking build but suffers from loose joints and pain in the ass to build overall especially for beginners.

  • $43.19 for me now…

  • The 'Strike Freedom' is an upgraded version of this which appears in the next season of the anime and it looks like this: https://www.amazon.com.au/Bandai-Hobby-Kit-Hg-144/dp/B07HYY7…

It gets some gold trim bling and blasters on its waist. When I bought it years back I think it came with dual laser swords along with the gun and shield.

    • Do note it is a HG (High Grade) kit though (can see the link at the end of the OP to see different grade comparison).

  • The MG price is not that good tbh.

    • It is probably just okay for local stock, as I was mainly browsing for RG kits <$40 and then saw the MG <$80.

  • Just to say RG is not for novice. Start with EG, HG or FG before moving up to MG and RG.

Btw, I built gunpla since mid-1980s.

My first gunpla was the first gunpla - 1/144 Grand daddy Gundam.

ANd I enjoy the vintage gunpla kits.

    • Respectfully, this is gatekeeping. Most recent release RG and MG kits are totally fine for beginners, and require no special skills. As long as it's a newer kit or a recent revision, they're still easier to complete and require less model engineering than an average Airfix kit.

      • +2

Might not be gatekeeping as much as it's good advice. You yourself had to put a caveat about new kits and revisions which agrees that not all RG are for newbies and this RG wing is super old.

Im a newb and my 2nd kit was RG strike freedom and I screwed up the nubs on the blue feet, cut the ball join on the right gun grip hand and cut a peg off one of the squishy yellow inner frame arm pieces. Not to mention constant frustration at how damn flimsy it is. I've just taken off the upper shoulders since it falls off when someone sneezes in the house.

    • +1

I started with the RG Hi-Nu and while it took a while to finish, it wasn't particularly difficult or anything. Just gotta have some patience and it's fine.

  • how is pre-order OOS? I want that wing lol

    • Probably based on whatever estimated stock allocation Amazon is getting from Bandai over the next few months

    • Back in stock from I can see

      • I'm not seeing it being available from Amazon AU, but third-party seller.

    • but the wing is a very old RG kit(2014)

  • Freedom was the last Gundam series I watched. This must be almost a decade ago now. I had a HG wing zero back in my early teens and iirc, it costed in the hundreds then.

Is gunpla the only thing that didn't move with inflation and actually went the opposite way?

    • 2 actually, theyre celebrating their 20th anniversary soon and just announced a new movie.

Gunpla did get inflation. Its prices have crept up too over time. The reason there are these deals is because amazon has free shipping from JP on prime. Tack on actual shipping via normal postal services and they wouldn't be that big of a deal anymore.

Also way back in the early 00s there was no proper distributor and supply set up. So it was a hunch of people just bringing stuff over and reselling.

    • that might be in 1/100 scale, new kit cost more and also has more detail.
