The tale of a free beer.

Long story short. I got a free can of beer as a promotion from a major supplier of grog with the purchase of $50 +

I put it in my fridge and had forgotten about it til now. Was making myself a Greek salad and spotted it in the fridge so I thought I would drink it. Checked the BB date, was all good, and opened it.

First whiff was somewhat similar to a steaming pile of week old grass clippings. I Then looked at the can. Yep, it was an IPA. Even knowing it was this, I still took a little sip.

First bit, I nearly chundered. It tasted like it smelt, and what I can only imagine 5 day old horse piss sitting in a bucket in the sun tastes like.

So, if you ever get one of these offers, do yourself a favour, pour it straight down the sink and do a Bear Grylls.

  • Was making myself a Greek salad

    Are you in Greece ?

    Mythos beer is pretty good.

This is Ozbargain, where the F do yo think I live? Canberra for the record.

And I now truly feel part of the community.

      I have been JV'd!

        Canberra for the record.

So it is not Greek salad then.

Maybe you made a 'Greek style' salad?

Anyway, I'm sure you can get Mythos beer in Canberra… Ask @Savvas

No, proper Greek salad. Tomato, cucumber, red onion, kalamata olives and a chunk of fetta, or feta if you a purist, and a little olive oil, lemon juice. And that is it.

Tried Mythos about a year back. It is pretty ordinary. I am not a beer connoisseur per se.
More of a beer guzzler. I see no point in drinking other than to get drunk. And I wan't to enjoy my getting drunk, not drink horse piss.

I know what beers I like and at 60+ I will keep enjoying them til I cark it.

was it a beer called better beer?

    • Nah, that tastes like water.

      • Not at all. I've been waiting decades for someone to work out how to carbonise yet still leave it tasting like flat stale Double Diamond, an epicurean offering for those who can't handle the powerful flavour of Watney's Red barrel.

I had a very similar experience when they released Carlton Zero… I probably should have known better

    Never again

    • Hmm I actually thought it was quite good.

  • Same experience with IPA…. so bitter and horrible.

      IPA…. so bitter and horrible.

      Your taste buds are broken.

      Get new ones.

      so bitter

Beer is supposed to be bitter…

Do you drink lemon juice and complain it is sour?

  • Sniff a hand pressed organic cider…. Unless you have a foot ferish like JV.

Grass clippings are awesome…fruity beers get my gag reflex going, should be illegal.

    Long story short

    Wasn't short enough

You know there's plenty of beer styles out there, and you don't have to like all of them..

You'll be surprised to find out many people prefer the taste of beer styles that aren't just extra dry, super dry, or named after a state or Qld region.

    • +2

Most of my friends and acquaintances all prefer completely different beers. There are only a few of us that all like the same beer. This was meant to be a joke story anyways. Perhaps I should give up my comedy carreer now lol.

  • How long was it in the fridge?

    • About 2 months.

  • All beer tastes crappy, Stouts however, are quite fantastic.

    • +1

I have actually been enjoying a few Coopers stouts lately. Nice flavour.

  • First bit, I nearly chundered. It tasted like it smelt, and what I can only imagine 5 day old horse piss sitting in a bucket in the sun tastes like.

You could have just said it was American beer and leave it at that.

  • +1

Well you have no idea of IPA's.
Instead of blaming, you need to educate yourself.
Hops are not for everyone. Also with IPA's , the fresher the better!

    • I just haven''t found one that appeals to me so far. Only tried about a dozen different ones. This one was at the end of its BB date, probably why it was a freebie.

  • +3

I've never felt compelled to create a thread to tell people not to drink a beer style I don't like, do you do the same with everything else you dislike? Very strange.

    • Welcome to the internet.

    • yet you live in a society… strange, no?

    • It was just meant to be funny. Not taken seriously.

  • +1

Well okay but judging by your automatic dislike of IPAs I don't think I can base much on your story as you have narrower tastes than me.

    Which is perfectly fine.

Anyway I'm sorry it didn't work out for you.

  • Pale Ales are the worst tasting 'beer' ever. Why add all the fruity or herby garbage?
Lager or Pilsner style beers are the best. A nice clear and tasty liquid, not some cloudy dishwater.
