Releasing November 17th

In my last post I said I'd be surprised if the price on this didn't drop on Amazon within a day or 2. In the end I was surprised because it took about 5.

But Super Mario RPG is now having its lowest price matched at Amazon.

A reminder that Amazon takes no upfront payment for a preorder and let's you cancel any time. They also give you the lowest price if it drops between order and delivery, even if it just drops for a second.

Also, I consider this a deal because it's the lowest price you'll find it elsewhere, except it also has delivery included.

Love me some Nintendo, but very surprised this is full price considering its not adding any new material and is a relatively short-ish game…….will be interesting to see how it sells

    • +3

very surprised this is full price

      Love me some Nintendo

From what I hear, this is pretty standard from them, and sales on their first party games are scarce :(

    • It's a ground-up remake so it makes sense.

But then you have remakes like Crash/Spyro trilogies that were slightly cheaper and had 3 games in total.

Paying the Nintendo tax as usual but imo their quality makes it worth it.

    • +1

They did the same thing with Zelda: Link's Awakening so it just seems to be Nintendo's MO.

    • +2

Last of us part 1 is re-released on ps5 for $90+ for a relatively shortish game

Not defending Nintendo, but we are in the era of re-release. At least is is not released on past 3 console generations in a row

    • It looks amazing, but it's a 1996 game. It's 17 hours long.

Full priced AAA games like Elden Ring or Tears of the Kingdom cost hundreds of people years of work, and offer 50+ hours of fun.

No matter how you try to justify it, $69 is nowhere close to being a bargain for this game.

      • +1

Agreed. This should've been $29.99 max.

      • +1

        $49 is about right.

    • -1

It's this price because the kind of person who would buy it will buy it at full price. Also Square probably owned the rights to anything original they added to the game, Nintendo would have had to buy them out or pay a license.

    • -1

Gotta remember, this is not JUST Nintendo, it's Nintendo AND Square Enix, Nintendo does not have the rights to make Super Mario RPG without Square's involvement.

This pre order price will be the normal price for the next 5 years

  • +3

I love this game but damn I was expecting a lower price.

    Anyways I'll be buying it

    • This is a remake of a old classic game with new graphics, it appeals the most to old school hardcore Nintendo fans or new Nintendo fans who would like to be like old school fans , both of which have no problem paying full price.

    • +9

      Anyways I'll be buying it

And that's why it's not priced lower :D

      • +1

        Exactly.

If you strip all the wonderful memories and great games from nintendo, you have a pretty shrewd business at the core.

Odd people complain so much about “full price” games. I recall SNES and 64 games being $79-$99 at launch, so what’s that these days? $150? Imagine paying that for a bad game and your only avenue to get rid of it was the local classifieds or cash converters…

    • +3

Totally agree and often get a chuckle when I pluck one of my old N64 games and the box has an old sticker of $100+!

    • +1

I'm old enough to remember those days, but to keep things in context: you are on a bargain tracking website, hence why people want better deals. Arguing against cheaper deals it sin bin worthy lol.

      • Nah, it’s complained heavily about by YouTubers as well. I think it’s more so just so people have something to argue about rather than being a big issue. I think this $60-70 price is more realistic though as to what a good game is worth.

        • Agree. Games were expensive 20 years ago, but you would only get 1 a year if you’re lucky. Even if it was bad I would play it forever and master it. Nowadays my steam library is in the thousands and if I play something for 2 seconds and I get bored then I just leave it and try another one. Prices are super low and we are spoilt for choice these day.

I still don’t know how Xbox and PlayStation can have subscriptions to new AAA titles and only charge $10 a month. It’s crazy value.

        • Gotta disagree, videogames as a whole are more profitable than ever, so the price going up makes no sense already, inflation of money is not as extreme as the inflation of their audience base.

IF higher prices meant better games, or better paid developers, or better working conditions, sure, that'd be great, but when those prices go up they still lay off JUST as many developers once the game is done, there are just as many harassment lawsuits, the only difference is the number of Yachts the CEO buys.

    • +2

My family paid I think release price of either 119.99 or 129.99 for SNES NBA Jam TE in 94 or 95

I remember there being quite the uproar.

    • +1

Yep, I remember seeing the wolverine game on snes at toys r us for $120. Which is a crazy price back in the late 90s

    • +4

If you only talk about inflation, $70 games seem cheap, sure. But that's not the only difference:

      • wages have not kept up with inflation
      • the number of gamers is ten times higher. Why don't games cost $7 then? (Or $15 for inflation)

Even ignoring that, I can get fantastic GOAT AAAA games for $15 on PC, or $30 on other consoles, once they're a year old.

And then there's Epic freebies and Gamepass.

I've been a Nintendo fan since the NES, I bought Tears of the Kingdom full price and am getting every cent's worth, but they are overcharging us on most of these games, and not just by a little bit.

    • +3

games back then cost the ROM and expansion chips, and the bigger the ROM was and the more advanced chips in the cart meant the game cost more. Nintendo made publishers buy minimum number of chips in advance too. Glover 2 for N64 was cancelled just because someone accidentally ordered too many chips when getting ready to publish and it was determined it was cheaper to not publish it at all than go through with it. These days storage is cheap, apparently an 8GB Switch cart costs about the same as a 50GB PS4 blu ray disc, which itself is mostly licensing costs. A few years ago it was said a 32GB switch cart was only 40% more than a 50GB blu ray.

    • You're on Ozbargain where people expect free games to add to their pile of shame from the likes of Epic, GOG, Amazon Gaming, Steam, etc.

      • +1

That's not OzBargain, that's just gaming in 2023.

It's a more mature, efficient market where there are ten times as many buyers, and the rich/keen can still pay an eye-watering amount for a game they are super excited about (e.g. steam release prices over a hundred bucks, collectors editions with bonus merch around $200, etc), and the other 95% of people who are interested in playing it can get it for half price a few months later, or eventually even a few bucks, or free.

This is a lot better for gamers, and also makes game dev studios a lot more money, too, since they get more from the people willing to pay more, without losing sales of the 95%.

Meanwhile Nintendo is stuck in the 2000s charging $70 for everything, good or awful, and never properly discounting, so most of the people worldwide who want to play the game have to choose between pirating or just never playing it.

  • i have too many preorders already lol switch and ps5 lol

    • +3

And you will complete only few of the games you pre-orderd the rest will remain in the pile of shame

  • Probably will be collectable

  • +3

A reminder that this is better than the US price - $60 USD and that's before tax (has been the case for many Switch first party titles tbh). Kind of makes a stark contrast when you compare to current gen titles on PS5/XSX/PC where they're $70 USD + tax, yet our prices are way over $110 AUD equivalent.

  • Dose anyone buy toys (like lego, figures, Gundam)or gamed just for collection? I mean just open and play sometimes. Toy just leave it in the new boxes.

    • a lot of my friends buy two copies, one to open and use/display/play, one for collections sake. This is in particular for figures, but some also do it for limited edition or special or rare or nostalgic games
