  • Is there a reason you wouldn’t buy this: https://www.catch.com.au/product/seagate-exos-enterprise-x18…

    • Am I missing something?!

      • If the catch deal is aus stock; good deal

        • Is there a way to tell other than contacting seller?

        • +3

I'd assume that they're not Australian stock - the seller name on Catch matches up with Neology who has run various group buys on OzBargain for drives imported from Hong Kong - he has set up a web site now - Price for the same drive directly from him is $370 before shipping:

          https://www.neology.com.au/ST16000NM000J/

    • +1

Because neology is selling OEM drives (based on their own website details) and therefore is responsible for any warranty claims.
They state “3 Years Australian Store Warranty” and their warranty page details the steps you have to take if you have any issues.

I’d prefer to deal with Seagate in cases of large drives like this but it’s your choice.

      • Yep - I got them direct (and didn't shuck) when I went for large drives - but it's a case of your own personal risk tolerances

    • 2 x 18tb for $839 (shipping for me $11.95)

      https://www.neology.com.au/st18000nm000j-2

36TB for $851.90 works out to be $23.66/TB and a pretty good deal for me…

I have two of these from a year~ ago, I find them very quiet compared to the two WD 16tb I got from shucking external drives.

    • +2

yeah not sure about the OPs comment about being noisy. I have 48TB in my Plex server. Half of that are Exos drives. They're super quiet. Also not NAS drives, they're enterprise drives.

      • I don't mean that your neighbours will be complaining about the drive noises, but you can definitely hear the drives scratching noise in a quite room.

I have 16TB EXOS drives on my unraid and I can tell when someone is doing a large transfer from them from all the scratching sounds and the only times these drives are silent is when they are idle after unraid has spun them down.

  • Am I the only one who has multiple seagate hd fail on me? Too scared to used them anymore

    • +1

Always assume your hard drives will fail, and design your backup routine appropriately.
Multiple drive failures is absolutely normal, just get them replaced under warranty and move on. Avoiding one particular brand is totally pointless - you still need the same backup routine if you move exclusively to WD.

  • I have got 2 of these (2x 20TB) and they are pretty quiet. Have no issues whatsoever - great drives.

The 16TB IronWolf Pro on the other hand - that is noisy.

  • Has anyone managed to buy these recently? If I put one in the cart you get the special, put two or more in and they go up to the regular price. Emailed yesterday tried chat today, no response yet. Just wondering if anyone knew a way to buy two at the discounted price?

  • Can confirm this deal has EXPIRED. Just got through on the phone and they only have one unit left at the $455 price, then they go up to $689. Not much help for a NAS unit with one. They said they will try their supplier at some stage to see if they can get more at a good price

  • Just to give final kudos to Prediff and what a good offer this, they went up to $689 this morning, by this afternoon they were $799. Just a little more than you buy a pack of two on ebay for (though they won't have aus warranty). Well done prediff.

    • Shopping express still has it for a reasonable price if you are still looking

  • Thanks prediff! They are $519, I will probably just buy a couple of the imports and test them before putting them into a NAS. Was happy to pay $150 extra, it just seems to creep up the difference.
