Still waiting for the Show 5 3rd Gen to be released in Australia…

      Yea interesting review found here.

      https://au.pcmag.com/smart-displays/100494/amazon-echo-show-…

I guess depends on what the Gen3 price is.

However compared to the Dot, I think the screen makes it more functional, with proviso that the sound quality isnt going to be as good. As usual, trade offs of functionality and price.

      • Would be very keen on this upgrade but have current 5 mounted in kitchen wall with a mount genie wall cavity mount set into tiled splashback . Looks like the new one is 5mm too wide for that setup :(

    • me too. but still no release day in AU yet

I have the 8 and find it awfully slow and unresponsive , was quite disappointed to be honest …ist just now used as a clock with changing photos …

does this one feel same ? Need a nice clock for bedside table !

    • My Echo Show 5's sceen badly ghosting after about a year. The voice control deteriorated to bearly useable. The 1st gen Google Home 7" still fine after a few years apart from the ads between the news.

Leave it unplugged for a day or so and if it's still ghosting or glitching contact Amazon customer support. I've had two of the gen 1's do this and had to replace them, but both times contacted Amazon via chat and they gave me 25% off for a new one as mine were out of the 12 month warranty period. Doesn't hurt to try.

I had the 8 and larger 10 (I think it was), but sent both back. What's the point of all that screen space if the time and date is so tiny you can't read it from across the room? At least the 5's clock stands out. Audio quality could sure use a bump though. Very boxy.

      • Is that noticeable when just used as a clock?

I have both and while a larger display is nice the oneain big downer for me was the clock face on the Echo 8, it doesn't display fullscreen like the Echo 5.

Echo 5 I think is much better suited for bedrooms and offices.

Echo 8 more for your living areas.

Same reason, I like the fullscreen clock on the Show 5. The 8 only shows a small clock in the corner.

For that reason the 8 might be better on an office desk, since you can read the small clock whereas in the livingroom the large clock on the 5 is easier to see from further away

  • Was looking at the Echo 8 to sit on my desk in the office to use it as a Security camera display for the front door and gate. Does anyone know if you can leave the screen and apps on or does it go into powersave/screensaver mode after a few minutes?

  • I quite like my Show 5 but recently its started showing adverts / products I'd like to buy. I haven't played around yet to discover if they can be turned off.

    • +2

I started getting ads on my 8 recently. There was a setting in the display menu that lets your turn them off.

    • +1

Yeah, the ads are getting quite intrusive. Not only is it reminding me my shopping list was empty, but then it started recommending me various products on another screen. You can turn them off (swipe down from the top, Settings, Home & Clock, Home Content and move the sliders on anything you don't want to see).

      • Thanks for the instructions. I'll give this a go on the ads and the shopping list when I get home.

  • Anyone know how to turn off the dumb ads this gives you? I bought it as a clock and to announce the doorbell, not to find out what else it can do

  • This is a rubbish device. Heaps of bugs, doesn't auto dim 90% of time, can't turn off adds etc.

    Had many. All the same.

  • Echo 8 $99 on amazon now

    • Curious, is this the latest Echo 8?
