Travel Backpack for Europe

Going to Europe soon and need a travel backpack. I normally use my nike backpack I bought from Catch about 5 years ago but thats starting to display holes at the bottom.

Missed out on the Amazon 11 dollar anti theft bag. Would be happy with any half decent backpack suitable for travelling.

I’ve always been a big fan of osprey

    • They are really heavy bags though. My husband has heaps of these and some of the bags weigh probably half if not more of the carry on allowance.

    Budget?
I use Osprey a lot for travelling and when going to the snow.

      Maybe 70 bux max?

      • Well given the negs how much do you guys recommend I budget?

        • Just consider that if you buy the right bag, you can use this for 5-10 years and for each flight you take, you're saving between $30-80 on a checked bag (depending on budget airline prices). I'd go +1 on the Farpoint 40. Or once in Europe, buy the CabinMax off Amazon. Something in that ~40L size bracket will be ideal for a European summer trip

Osprey Farpoint 40. Buy once cry once.

Agree. Or the female equivalent - Fairview 40. Excellent bags. Highly recommend. We have even had one of them repaired for free (due to customs breaking candles in the bag and the glass cutting the fabric)

    • Where do you normally buy from?

Not slash-proof, but Under Armour do some good light comfy bags

    • Just had a look at the rebel website and they look amazing!

      • We took 2 to nz, were comfy for carry-on plus we did a 3hr hike with them

Ended up buying UA hustle 5.0! Great bag. Thanks for the suggestion.

You haven't said it in your question but I assume you want something you can carry on as luggage, as opposed to a much larger backpack which you can check-in.

I used this as it's about the largest you can get whilst staying within the carry-on limits for most (but not all!) airlines:

    https://www.kathmandu.com.au/litehaul-pack-48l.html

It's not rainproof but in my experience was fine being wiped dry after a light showers. There's a side pocket for a drink or umbrella in which you could easily store a rain cover if needed.

The harness is nice and comfortable, and breathes well.

It has a padded section for a laptop which was a selling point for me.

Others here have recommended the Osprey Farpoint 40. I haven't tried it, but read lots of reviews when I was choosing between the Kathmandu Litehaul and the Osprey, and they are both similar enough in size, price, comfort, and features that neither would have been the wrong choice for my needs.

That said, I also ended up buying a smaller Antler bag for when I'm travelling and just need a single day's worth of clothes, laptop, etc. So now I have a one-day backpack, and a ~7-day backpack.

Only real problem with the Litehaul is it has one large internal compartment; to get any kind of organisation, you need to use packing cells.

It's currently on sale for $230.

    • This is great, thank you and yes for carry on!

  • I just backpacked around Germany and Ireland with a Kmart travel backpack. Great little backpack, fits the carry-on limit (which is what I wanted).

    • Wow, 20l, did you have additional luggage stored elsewhere?

Took few clothes, washed them every couple of days. Barely took any toiletries, bought them over there.

  • Check out Decathlon, the IKEA of outdoor/sporting products. Their Quechua line of backpacks is super popular in Europe.

  • just get a Caribee - 30-32L will set you back $60-70

    • Any links?

      • No links but I just bought one from Peters of Kensington for $63 - a 30L Caribee
