Ricoh GR IIIx $1279.20 Delivered @ digiDirect eBay

DIGIJUL23

Thanks Buy2much for the original deal post Original Coupon Deal

Bit of a niche camera, been wanting to find a replacement for my x100s for ages now and still no news for an x100v successor, let alone one with IBIS.
Seems like a pretty good price with my nearly daily google price searches on this camera for the last few months.

    Nice piece of kit!

  • Hrmmm my RX100 VI just died on me… maybe this is a decent replacement.

    • It’s like a mini RX1

    • +1

I have an rx100 6, would be different beasts - i would definitely miss the zoom if i was using this to replace the m6

  • X100s reaching absolutely chaotic prices secondhand atm, might be worth cashing out!

I use the OG film GR1 and absolutely love it. There are whispers that they might resurrect the film camera, which would be amazing!

    • X100s reaching absolutely chaotic prices secondhand atm

bloody hipsters and tiktok - i already sold my x100s pre covid, and i miss the form factor but yeah current prices on the V even second hand got me saying nah fam

      • +1

So is it TikTok driving up the prices? I was trying to figure out whats happening - and that's the only source that I can seem to find?

I was patiently waiting to pick up an X100s for $3-400, which it almost hit before prices skyrocketed! I reckon I'll be waiting a long time to see anything close to those prices again.

        • relatively reputable source
          sorry for the petapixel link

yeah the way camera prices been these days i would not be surprised if you had to wait another 5-6 years+

only cameras like traditional slr or severely outdated tech like og a7 iii or, or micro43 i find really drop that drastic for 2nd hand prices

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Oh sorry, I meant I could only find Tiktok being the source of all the demand! Absolutely wild times.

Yeah, I was looking at the A7 series, also hoping the new A7C pushes prices of the current model down.

    • Oh really? I’ve got a x100s just chilling on a shelf. Didn’t realise they are worth much.

  • +3

Great street photo camera. Good, cheaper alternative to the Fuji X100v.

      • +2

The original GR1 was used by quite a few of Japan's most infamous street photographers, including Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama. The sleek and discreet form factor coupled with that tack sharp lens makes for a rather unique proposition.

    • i think i would miss the viewfinder and too much of a tightarse to shell out for the ricoh add-on , but the x100s viewinder was pretty meh anyway

    • Ah good call out

    • +1

the x100v is 35mm equiv. so sits inbetween the griii and griiix

      • Oh you are right my brain died. For some reason I did the conversion for the gr3s but not the x100v and as a result thought it was much bigger difference.

    • +1

ive always been soso for 28-35mm, 50mm for me any day of the week so this is the next best

      • On APS-C, the 28/35mm is perfect. 50mm on FF is good - though I kind of prefer my 43mm on my FF.

  • They don't have more than 10 available. buy asap if you need it

    • hi they did at time of post - otherwise i wouldnt have bothered

      • I rephrase, I doubt they have that many. They will probably end the listing after selling 1 or 2

        • possibly, previous to this, 1319 i think was the best i saw. the main seller of this camera is also out of stock till very late august.

  • +1

Any comments about the autofocus performance from anyone who's used this camera? Reviews say it's generally not great in lower-light settings.

    • +2

street shooters would prob be zone/snap focus shooting anyway - kind of the main target demographic - the x100s af was pretty average too even in decent light.

    • +2

I have this and came from the X100V. Reviews are generally on point; fine in good light, inconsistent in lower light and overall less confident than the X100V.

I still have no real issues capturing daily life and only seldomly revert to snap focus.

  • +1

Love mine. got it last May from a ted's waitlist as it was OOS everywhere for 1.5k. This is a great price!

    • lol i bought a 25mm f1.4 and re-bought a 12mm f2 2nd hand the other day for my new g9… kinda felt like i shoulda just went this ah

  • -3

While I get it that most people would be interested in this for its lightweight. However, I would probably go for Fujifilm X-S20 with a 15-45mm lens for $1,910 or Fujifilm X-S20 by itself for 1,830 on Digidirect Ebay. By spending about $300 more, you can get into the hobby and play around with Fujifilm film simulation, lenses, and just learning things.

    • +3

I’m in it for the size and focal length and it has ibis. I want something to slip in and out of my coat / jacket camera. A moments camera. Those 2 am drives. Those beach days. Those summer nights in the city. Those vacation nights. That is what this camera is meant for. Little bit of tequila and a bad chick with you and I promise you will be vibing like crazy with this.

If it was bigger I might as well shoot with my a7iii and 55 1.8. I do all my edits in LR anyway. Always been meh about inbuilt filters.

    • +5

      Totally different cameras.

    • +4

Depends on what you want from the hobby. The biggest advantage of this over any of the Fuji X lineup is it can fit in a pocket.

As someone who really can't be bothered carrying a camera bag or hanging a camera off my neck; this is a priority for me over the ability to change lenses etc.

    • +1

different audience. I wouldn't be recommending this for someone new to the hobby, instead it attracts people on it's own well enough.

Still miss my GRII, 40mm equiv would be fun to play with too.

    • It's not because its lightweight, it's because its pocketable. You can't imagine how much more important this is than pixel count etc.

  • +2

Love this camera. Fits (snugly) in pretty much most pockets and that 40mm lens is crisp. Got it for 1400 or so last year, so this is a great find!

  • +1

    Absolutely absurd price

  • +1

For those who want this camera but are prone to taking a lot of pictures in a day, I would highly recommend factoring in at least an extra official battery: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/225627889660

I would also recommend the official battery charger instead of having to charge the battery through the cameras USB C port: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/234545619622 (apologies seems this is out of stock)

Got both of the above delivered recently through this seller without issues.

    • +1

      I got these and are excellent: Newmowa Li-90B Battery (2 Pack)… https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07H3PVVL5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_s…

      • Certainly the aftermarket options have better value, my only concern is that they don't seem to last as long as the official option (which is already pretty weak).

I could have still gone aftermarket for the external charger, but I like the small form factor of the official one and the price at that eBay store made it cheap enough for me to buy the official accessories instead.

        • i find generic batteries in general are just nowhere near as good as the authentic - the only one i found to NOT be the case is the wasabi batteries for gopro.

the neweer ones for my a7iii i swear cause a lag in startup, especially when used in the neweer battery grip

      • Are these compatible with the GR?

        • That would use a db-65 i think. Different battery.

  • Would Cartier-Bresson use this camera?

    • I’m not entirely convinced but what about the Leica look/ pop 🥺

    • +2

Honestly, (and I say this with all due respect to the great photographers of years past) who cares.

Too many try and emulate styles and use gear like their photography heroes instead of taking what they have/can afford and getting out and just taking photos.

  • 5 left, at least 5 sold as was showing 10+ when I posted

  • +1

Same store has the III for $100 cheaper. Apparently they are the same camera except for the 28mm equiv lens.

  • +1

Love everything except low light shooting is crap and the focus is damn slow.

    • Those are pretty big drawbacks imo

    • The low light performance is good as long as the focus is on point; but that autofocus performance in low light takes a massive hit.

  • +3

So I've responded to a few things on here but now I'm home I can write up a few thoughts on the if it helps anyone.

Lucky enough to have previously owned a few cameras in the GR and X100 series to compare. Prior to the GRIIIx, had the X100V for a few years before selling it at stupidly inflated prices (thanks Tiktok).

Cameras are often compared but they meet different needs and are in many ways complementary. Fuji is more tactile, old school film camera-like to use and play with the film simulations; but also needs at least a small bag. Ricoh is the pocketable, discreet option.

Autofocus is a limitation of the GRIIIx compared to the Fuji. Fine in enough light but can struggle to get it right in lower light scenarios (snap focus helps here). Either way, the Fuji is overall quicker and more confident in the autofocus results. I use my cameras for general life captures with kids and it's still rarely a problem though, even if it takes a little more effort.

Dust is a factor that is often talked about with the Ricoh and it can happen…to any point and shoot camera with a fixed lens. My prior X100T and GRII both had it (despite being well treated and kept away from obvious dust). I keep my GRIIIx in my pocket without much concern, although I do note to check and empty my pockets of lint every so often to be on the safer side.

I won't go too much into the photo results as there are plently of YouTube videos for that. All I say is that I prefer working with the Ricoh files over the Fuji in Lightroom and the Ricoh app is way more reliable (and can transfer RAW images).

I'll happily answer more questions if I can. They are both great but with the stupid markups on the X100V, it's hard to recommend these days.

    • What's going on with TikTok/mark-ups on the X100? I have an X100s that's been in a draw for a year…

      • +2

        Buy high sell higher brah

      • X100V is the in style camera for Tiktoks apparently, and the X100V still has stock issues. As a result, all X100 cameras have spiked in price on the second hand market.

I sold mine for $700 more than what I bought it for new. If I sold it now I could likely get 300-400 more. Oh well, selling a camera for more than I bought it for after two years of use is fine by me.

      • fuji unable to keep up with the demand really. A few tiktok videos over the pandemic sent it into overdrive and they've been hard to get ever since. Main one is the x100v but interest and demand has extended out to the rest of the X100 cameras.

The market for them seems to have hit its peak somewhat at least

        • the demand has even extended to other Fujis like X-Pro 2/3, and X-E4 rangefinder style cameras pretty much.

Heck, even the X70 and the slow af XF10 have both gone up in prices. These were cameras that people didn't even bother.

      • sad to say i picked up Fuji X cause of TikTok lol, mainly because of film sim. really wanted the X100 but could only afford the X-Pro 2

    • you reckon the use of a small Point and Shoot pouch could mitigate dust? does defeat the purpose of having a Point and shoot when you have to put it in a pouch

      • Honestly probably not. The biggest cause for the dust issue is the retractable lens mechanism sucking dust in when turning the camera off.

The other thing I do that I failed to mention earlier is that every couple of weeks, I will get a lens brush and brush off any dust that has gathered around the lens barrel and assembly.

Will this help, I have no idea; but it makes me feel better about it :)

I have the GRiii for the last 6 months, has made me fall back in love with taking photos. I usually a DSLR/Mirrorless, which always gave me an excuse not to bring it or not take the shot.

As always, do your research. This is a perfect street / take-anywhere camera - albeit no weather sealing. Low-light shooting can be a struggle with focus hunting, but there is a snap-focus feature (fixed focus length) to bypass this. So it will take some time to get used to it.

    • A weather sealed 40mm GR-ish camera would absolutely pique my interests. I can deal with the low light performance - it's a genuinely pocketable camera after all.

    • I have the GRiii for the last 6 months, has made me fall back in love with taking photos. I usually a DSLR/Mirrorless, which always gave me an excuse not to bring it or not take the shot.

I had the same revelation way back with the Lumix GF1. Really is amazing how much more enjoyable photography is when the camera is a thing you happen to have with you while doing things rather than something that burdens you with its presence and prevents you from doing things. Been waiting for an updated APS-C version of that camera for many years now. The pancake lens also avoids the issue with this Ricoh where the lens retraction pulls dust inside.

  • All gone thanks for playing everyone

  • My experience with Ricoh is that it dies after a few years. Not saying everything is like that, but I heard from a few people already that has similar case.

  • +2

    damm missed out

  • -4

Sorry I might be missing the point but why spend $1200 on a camera when flagship phones take better photos & videos (this one is 1080p video too)

    • +5

      gets popcorn

    • why spend money on a sports car when corolla is fast enough and has more seats?

      ^ same thing really

      • 💩 analogy. Sports car is faster , but this camera is not better than flagships.

  • I still don't get this. For little more, you can go full frame (twice as big sensor, twice as more light, twice as more flexibility and bokeh etc) plus interchangeable lenses as well. Only postives of this being smaller size and $500 cheaper. But pixel 7 pro would easily do all this can do plus more..! Depending on what you value the most, you either would buy a pixel pro camera or A7iii. I just don't get the hype of these APSC, micro 4 third cameras, they do not make any sense whatsoever.

    • +4

then it's not for you. This camera would fit in between a 7 pro and a dslr camera

      • How MUCH better then a 7 pro though? For similar price.

        • +1

I had an iphone and a GR2 about 5 years ago. I literally took thousands photos more in a year since I have the GR2. So for me it's thousands times better.
This is not an easy to answer question since honestly it depends on the person. If it make you taking more photos and enjoy photography more, then it's defo a better choice.

        • define better… what do you want out of it?

I'll tell you right now - to begin with sensor size is bigger, it's faster as well, being F2.8 wide open on an APS-C, it will also be sharper. Whether these features are important depends on you.

7 Pro is a phone that happens to take pictures, the Ricoh GR is a device designed for the sole purpose of taking picture.

But if you don't care for the above, stick to the 7 Pro lol…

      • Is it really though? I know the sensor of 7 pro is smaller but AI processing and dedicated chip is so advanced that I'm struggling to identify A7iii photos from pixel photos at 28 mm focal length even pixel peeping (that's full frame vs pixel 7). Full frame easily wins at bokeh category though (even the most advanced AI created bokeh isn't as good as natural bokeh). But 40 mm F2.8 isn't a bokeh lens F2.8 on an APSC sensor won't give you a nice bokeh). Therefore, I don't think you can place this camera ahead of a pixel 7 camera in any category unfortunately. In fact, in some categories, pixel 7 pro will destroy it with ease.

        • I can't tell the difference tbh. However since I do heavy editing for my photos, better sensor does make a big difference. It really depends on the user case. As the OP said, it's a niche camera after all. You can't appreciate it until you actually use it.

        • Size is pretty much everything now. Came from crop sensor to full frame then to fuji mirror less (x100xx /xt-xx)then back to phone and back to fuji. The photos from the phone (Samsung ultra)never really satisfied vs the dedicated camera, it was good but missing something special if you don't know it, u don't know it.

So short summary, phone photo result isn't as satisfying. Even fuji x100 range is a bit too big to carry everywhere so this would be pretty cool to try. Shame it sold out.

          • @KiwiRoo:

you don't know it, u don't know it.

And you don’t wanna know or it will cost you $

It comes to the “good enough”. For some FF is minimum, some aps-c, some m43, some 1”, some smartphones and some just live the moment, no need for photos or videos.

            • @snvl:

And you don’t wanna know or it will cost you $

it's true tho, if you think it's good enough then you probably don't know and it does not really matter… and there is nothing wrong with it.

having said that, 1 inch and above is considered enthusiast and you will not go wrong with any of these sensors. Lenses matter more IMO.

          • @KiwiRoo: haha, are you me?

            Canon APSC -> Sony FE -> Nikon Z -> Fuji X -> Ricoh GR

I shoot with X-Pro 2 and yeah it's too big. I have the compact 23mm and 35mm F2, very sharp and beautifully made lens but they protrude so much, overall footprint is just as much as a decently sized mirrorless with a compact lens on

I ended up not bringing the X-Pro 2 and it eventually devolved into an expensive, fashionable brick. Will see how's the Negative Film on the Ricoh GR and whether it could beat the OOC film sim on the X-Pro 2.

            • @dukeGR4: Fe -> z, wow!

I was tempted too haha, my OG d600 still collecting dust , miss nikon tho. Can’t believe it used to be king of low light before OG a7

              • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Nikon Z is really cool! They go for peanuts these days, Z6 can be had for like 1400 on FB marketplace? or maybe less than that?

the F1.8S lenses are bloody sharp but they're massive.

                • @dukeGR4: Haha yeah I did see, had been pretty tempted quite a few times with amazon flash sales but I’m already too invested in fe, m43 and f glass, plus a whole lot of other random bits and pieces , don’t even get me started on when I went through my film phase 🥲

  • there is another one available

    • Goneeee

      • +1

lol it's insta360 deal all over again, they will add a unit or two every now and then.

  • for those still looking - do not give up yet. Occasionally they have additional units for sale.

  • Would recommend if you're still looking, keep checking eBay. I saw the GR IIIx at around midday yesterday (before it got snapped up) and checked this morning, they had a GR III available, which I purchased. Some people might be cancelling orders.

  • Hope there's more stock, been eyeing this camera for months.
Saw this deal a bit to late!
