Complimentary Travel Insurance

Hi, I've managed to somehow be declined twice for a new credit card from 2 seperate banks.. after I closed my original credit card. I need to book a holiday for Novemeber and wondered if there was another way to get complimentary travel insurance? I plan on purchasing a policy, however, I'd like to have back up of another policy.. just in case (im travelling to south america).

Does anybody know how else I can get complimentary travel insurance? I'm unsure if there are other products, like certain free debit cards that could provide it? Since I've been somehow declined by 2 banks on 2 credit card applications, I'm not willing to make another credit card application to help keep my credit rating somewhat intact. Does anybody have any ideas please?

Just buy travel insurance, those free policies aren’t very comprehensive.
You’re applying for credit cards (and getting declined) just to get free travel insurance, yet you can afford to travel to South America?

      (and somehow ** getting declined)

I know they arent very comprehensive, but if one company fails to pay out, then i might have a chance with the other.

And i was conditionally approved for a credit card, then somehow got declined despite having been told by 2 seperate bank staff members that i would be approved for more than i applied for. The computer systems decided no. So i got screwed over. And no, i did not lie on my application. All information i provided was true and proven with paperwork. Anyhow, yes, in a nutshell, i can afford south america and will be purchasing a seperate comprehensive insurance anyway.

What do you mean by backup? You can't have multiple policies that payout the same loss. Best just to get the best comprehensive you can afford.

    • Didnt plan on having multiple policies pay the same loss. Just incase one company decides to not pay, then i can hit up the other company. Fingers crossed i dont end up in that situation anyway

And if your backup company also decides not to pay? Are you going to have a backup backup company?

No such thing as a free lunch.

And if the product is free, you are the product

Whatever you do read the pds, don’t be like that one member last month who assumed

Just one? Must have been a record LOW month :P

Basically got into forums , threw a whole bunch of accusations, then realised they didn’t read the PDS

Just forget about applying for cc to just to get travel insurance and get a paid insurance.

Insurance claims are based on what's covers in the PDS. Doesn't matter if you have 100 back up polices. Hence read the PDS.

Use the NAB Visa Platinum Debit - $10/month fee but has complimentary travel insurance

It's what I do so I don't have to worry about keeping an active credit card for insurance purposes

    • Thank you. This helps to answer my question unlike a lot of other people puting me down and making assumptions about me.
I was hoping for a free version of a debit card that has complimentary insurance.. im unsure it exists though. I suppose i would have to compare pds anyhow though with other options (if there are any). Do you know if this is the exact same insurance policy as the nab credit cards and can be activated with $500 of travel expenses?

      • I don't think you'll find a free one - that's asking for a lot - but $120/year and given how much travel I do, I think this is worth it.

Yes its the same policy that needs $500 prepaid before your trip.

        • Thank you. I might look into it a bit more :-)

        • @Shadowsfury
Ive just been looking into it. Do you jnow if it covers partners too? It says spouse in the pds.. but we are not married.. so im not sure if spouse counts as partner.

Also, do you know if there were other debit cards that have similar insirance policies? Ive searched online and it keeps coming up with credit card options and not debit card options.

          • @kimba88: If you read the Policy Booklet it defines spouse for you

spouse means the partner of the cardholder who is permanently living with the cardholder at the time the journey or trip starts.

I am not aware of any other debit cards with such an insurance policy.

      • You could sign up for a month use it and cancel after the trip if you didn't need to use it.

Would never trust CC travel insurance for when you actually need to make a claim.

    • +2

Never assume what covered, always read the PDS. CC policies are fine, I had to cliam once and there were no issues.

I made a claim. took ~3 days to process. very happy.

haha I like how people negative our comments on postive feedback, some bitter ppl here lol

        • Indeed. I gave you an upvote ahahaha put you back at 0.

But very happy with the process. less than 20 mins to fill in the form and ~3 days later a refund.

Most of them use Allianz insurance.

Very happy with ANZ credit card cover. Three claims, all paid in full - a dropped camera, a rtw trip cancelled for unexpected medical event, and another rtw cancelled due to covid. Easy claims process. Cover commences once you spend $250 of trip expenses on the card. They will even cover some pre-existing conditions subject to a simple assessment and $75 assessment fee.
As everyone says, read the PDS

  • What sort of compliments are you wanting to receive from your travel insurance?

  • Don’t know how this works, but I’ve read that having multiple policies can result in the insurers only paying their share of your loss. Does anyone here know more about that?

    • Why must you tell them?

Or if policy is taken out by another person on the trip and then you just have the CC complementary insurance

  • Pro tip for South America: pack some disposable incontinence pads. Wish I had…

    • Why?

      • Central and South America (and any country where you shouldn't drink tap water) are high risk destinations for travellers diarrhoea. I had a mild bout in Peru and improvised using paper towel while waiting for the Imodium to kick in. If I had packed some pads I may have got an extra day out of my undies.

        • Oh gosh! That sounds like a scary thought! Id like to hike the inca trail.. but getting diarrhoea halfway through would be absolutely diabolical!

          • @kimba88: Consider also the Colca Canyon, the hike down to Oasis Sangalle. I stayed in Cabanaconde and enjoyed an icy drink after a day of hiking. That's probably where I got the bug.

            • @sumyungguy: Nice! Maybe you could PM me with your south america travel tips? I havent booked it yet, just in the planning stages. Doing antarctica after south america.

  • Age is everything on policies. Some credit card insurers won't provide it once you turn 70.

I wanted a multi trip annual insurance, RACV used to offer it but now only do single trips

Southern Cross will give me same cover as RACV but I can have it for 12 months from date I take it out.
Looks like I will use if for Japan, Thailand, U.K. and Germany

worth phoning around and asking insurance staff about their policies if you don't want to read through pages of stuff.
Keep a base line policy open and compare or better still set up Xcel spreadsheet.

    • Thats a good idea! I didnt consider an annual policy.. that might also be a viable option to use
