Use Google Pay to Avoid Credit Card Additional Cardholder Fees?

I'm looking at getting my first credit card, planning on trying to churn for rewards. Am I able to add the card to my phone's Google Pay wallet and give the physical card to my wife, so that we can both use the card without paying for an additional cardholder?

That feels like a loophole they may have tried to plug but I can't find much info about it.

Yes, you can both use the card. Google Pay/Apple Pay generate a new random number for each payment linked to the same account.

    • Sweet thanks. That's what I thought, but it seemed such an obvious way to avoid paying for an additional card I wondered if they'd figured out a way to prevent that.

I would assume it’s more for the credit card benefits like insurance

        • Ah interesting point. I'll be sure to book anything where I want insurance under my name not my wife's, just in case. Though I'd expect just it being paid on the card would be enough… insurers are famously jerks though so good thought.

  • you can even have 2 Android Phone both linked to the same card with no issues what so ever. Doesn't have to be 1 iOS and 1 Android.

  • Is there any maximum limit using Google Pay?

  • Yes, I do this with one of mine.

FYI I don't think most CC issuers charge for an additional cardholder.

Indeed but the ANZ rewards black card does, which looks like the best option within my means right now (I think it is anyway, maybe I'll get rejected hah).

      • I just got this card. min amount is $15k right?

Depends on what debts/liabilities you have, income and cash.

There's a min annual salary amount IIRC.

Yes…. But your 'wife' might get questioned when the name doesn't match her look if someone ever checks it. Not that happens much these days, about Costco is the only place that might do that.

They can't 'plug it'? The only way would be to disable the physical card when you add a virtual card. But the physical card is needed for places that don't do tap or online etc.
