    Thought this is RRP everywhere?

Also the 512GB white one has been as low as $378 couple of times. MS really fugged the SSD situation by making it exclusive to their form factors so much as I loved my XBOX Series X, they get a big L on that front from me.

  • +2

So what is this? A glorified Kodi box?

    • +13

      *a glorified BLACK Kodi box.

Honestly I hate it when companies used colour to signify their "new" products while charging a premium on it. Granted this one got a 1TB but if MS did not create their own form factor for external SSD then we would have been able to plug in 4TB SSD by now and be done with it. Crazy how not a lot of people even talk about it.

    • No.

    • It doesn't do Dolby Vision, HDR and Dolby Atmos passthrough properly, so it's not even better than other Kodi boxes.

  • surely were due for pro series of these consoles and not some extra storage ahaha

    • According to Head of Xbox, the Series X is the Pro model. So unless they're pressured by something Pro coming out from Sony I wouldn't expect a Pro Xbox anytime soon.

      • damn the series x is good but fk it pisses me off that all games arent 4k 120fps by now so many next gen games running 30fps just makes it feel so old :(

        • +5

It's not realistic to expect 4k120 from an $800 box.

          • +1

@DASHCAM NOW DUDE: i think it should be. i bought the series x as it was marketed to run 4k 120fps i dont see why its not realistic when they marketed it do that

            • @bob98: It should doesn't mean it can.

System resources are not infinite. Shadows, lighting, ray tracing, geometry, physics, textures. Somethings need to be sacrificed and some developers have chosen resolution and framerate.

        • +3

Developers don't take the time to optimise their games these days. If a game like Zelda can run on ancient hardware like the Switch, I don't see how Baldur's Gate 3 can't run on Xbox Series S. I feel like compared to the old days, modern developers are just lazy when it comes to optimisation - probably due to the corporate management not allocated enough resources to the optimisation side of things.

      • +1

They always deny a new console until they’re ready to announce it. Take that with a grain of salt. Companies routinely deny the existence of a new console right up to the day they show it physically in stage. From memory MS did this with Scorpio even.

Not to say they will do one, but I wouldn’t trust MS as a source for information since they obviously have to deny the existence until there’s a press release saying otherwise. If we’re looking for information then I think supply chain would be a more reliable place to look tbh.

  • 4k gaming?

    • Nope, 1440p

      • +1

Thanks, so still not the same powerful as the X series.

        • +1

Experience next-gen speed and performance with Xbox Series S in Carbon Black

Thinking what is the difference with the old S series?

      • More like 720p in some games…

      • Depends on the game. Selected games will run at 4k.

        • Like minesweeper?

          • @AFAR85: As netsurfer already commented a few hours ago, here's a few (from an out of date reddit post, probably more now):

            • Hades
            • Mass Effect Collection
            • Ori and the Will of the Wisps
            • Red Dead Redemption 1
            • The Touryst
            • Mortal Shell
            • Crysis Remastered
            • The Falconeer
            • Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2
            • Evil Dead The Game

Now don't get me wrong, most of these aren't the most technically demanding or latest games (though Ori is recent and looks absolutely gorgeous).

    • +2

Hades, Mass Effect Collection, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Red Dead Redemption 1, The Touryst, Mortal Shell, Crysis Remastered, The Falconeer, Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2

  • RRP and also low qty deals can't be posted here.

  • +1

a PC emulator for normal price oh 'ell naw.

  • +3

just pick up the regular 512gb model, xbox game pass is still great value even after the ratio reduction

  • +9

    Love the Series S,

Don't love RRP as a deal.

    • +2

Agreed, this is not a bargain, is it really even good value any more? Surely we will have Xbox Series XXX and PS5 Pro in the next year or so making this look really slow

      • +2

I see what you did there. Apparently it’ll be named PS5 Pro Stitute Edition.

  • +2

I will hold until the rose gold version is out in a years time at the same price as launch..
    /joke

not a great price, i feel the white ones got as low as $350 new, second hand under $300

  • +2

Waiting for the storage expansion card to drop to a reasonable price.

  • +2

    Where's the deal?

    • I guess it has a 1TB SSD as opposed to the older model 512GB. Twice the storage capacity. So an extra $50 (over the original Series S RRP) gets you twice the internal storage and also a black colour console. Much better colour choice if you have black furniture.

But i get your point about the price as $549 is just the RRP.

  • +3

the least they could have done with this model is put the disc drive back, for some Xbox One backwards compatibility goodness.

  • +1

Missed opportunity to launch this at Series S standard RRP, and discount the white one while they phase it out and replace it with this version.

Price is too close to the ps5 digital now

  • +2

Really MS? What’s next? A Robot White Series X? 😂

  • +1

    Standard price. Preorders aren't deals.

  • +1

    Under $500 by November.

  • +2

$549 is actually the RRP. And it's not only available from Amazon but it's also available on preorder from a bunch of other retailers. All at $549 price. Nothing special going on here from Amazon when it comes to price as it's only RRP.

  • I have both and love the S as I can bring it when I travel.

  • The s sells for 400 on sale that’s what to post

    • Yes but this is not the original series s console. It's actually got twice the internal storage too.

  • -1

Thanks All, Called it out as it looks like most retailers have changed the launch date. Initially due for middle of the month I thought then changed to 1st of September. Didn't see anything in the guidelines about new product launches not being allowed? $549 includes the free delivery and has Preorder price match guaranteed.. Though that alone I realise is not enough to post but with the delivery, change in dates thought it may be relevant for some.

    • +3

Didn't see anything in the guidelines about new product launches not being allowed?

Deal posts are for posting bargains. New products can be bargains, but just the fact that they’re new doesn’t make them a bargain.

There is a gaming forum here for general chit chat like this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/forum/40715

  • ahh cool thanks for that mate!

  • +1

Honestly, there're so many second hand series S on sale on Gumtree and FB Marketplace. Just make sure there's no console ban, and you can get one in decent condition for under $300.

  • +2

I honestly believe the Series S was terrible mistake by MS. Needed more power, perhaps 6TFLOPs? All it will do is force developers to delay or even skip Xbox in the future, when it becomes harder and harder to maintain feature parity in games.

    • +3

I believe the graphics (TFLOPS) line up ok with the target resolution for the console i.e. 1080p and lower… from my limited understanding RAM difference seems to be an issue with Balders Gate 3 and specifically split screen issue.
Series S has 10 GB whilst X has 16 GB.
Series S also has a slightly weaker CPU.

      • Weren't they meant to be targeting 1440p? I know it's not a direct comparison due to hardware generation and architecture, but why did they not target at least 6TF of One X. Mid way through this gen, the Series S will struggle

        • +1

One X was trying to do 4K gaming (but even that wasn't great).

I guess re Series S its best case there is some games that will do 1440p - even 4k - but often they may use dynamic resolution and drop to say 900p if going is tough.

Think of it like PC … that has even more gamut of variation in resources, GPU etc. The devs will try scale accordingly.

So the TFLOP isnt prob a concern as they can scale graphics but the real issue with series S is the RAM diff and in edge cases like Balders Gate its a challenge.

  • +2

Experience next-gen speed and performance"? Shouldnt that be "last-gen"?

    • What. Did the Xbox One X have the same performance?.

  • +1

I won't neg the deal, there is a use case for this system but it's just ultra ultra niche.

So you need the 1TB storage, but you are space limited, just enough that you can fit a TV or monitor somewhere, but the Series X is just too much.

That's the use case, you can't spare the room. Or a super hot climate and the X will overheat? I mean why? Why not get the 512GB, that's plenty of room for games, just don't have 5 AAA CODs on there at one time, you'll be fine, seriously, use Game Pass, use Cloud gaming.

Don't get it because it looks cool, the X looks cool too and performs WAAAAY better.

    • I never thought i would see some one claim that 512GB is plenty of space in this day and age. Remember that the operating system also shares that total available space.

Once you take into the account what the operating system reserves from the 512GB SSD for itself. Well it's only 364GB of usable space out of the box for the original Xbox Series S. And you claim that is plenty of space?. I don't think so. This is the 2020's, and not the 2010's.

      https://osgamers.com/frequently-asked-questions/how-much-fre…

      • Look my main point is, the deal is poor when compared to buying a Series X, which also has 1TB of space.

That's why you're better off getting the 512GB - if the performance of the console is sufficient - because its better value to use the 364GB of remaining storage, than buying this one.

One day, the 1TB Series S will be market competitive, but it isn't today at $550.
