Toddler Double Bed Mattress

Hey All

My daughter is turning two next month and my partner and I are going to transition her to a double bed so we can use the cot for a newborn due any second now.

Some of the ones around the $500ish range include

https://www.omf.net.au/products/original-p2?variant=37876485…

https://mattresscrafters.com.au/products/boutique?variant=40…

Looking for something reasonably priced with decent value given it will most likely get soiled whilst toilet training

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with them? Or have any other suggestions?

P.s located in Sydney and looking for something firmish

Already have a frame hence the mattress size.

Cheers

A double bed at 2? Is this common nowadays? Wouldn’t she rather more space in the room to play with toys?

Fussy sleeper. Wants someone in the room when falling asleep - hoping to have room to be able to sit while she sleeps and hopefully grow into.

Every parent does their own thing and that is fine but coddling them at this age will lead to more problems down the road.

Get a king single instead. Heck even a single bed for a 2yo would have enough room for you to sit on.

You can change this behavior in a week or less… just make a small incremental change each day.

ie, lying on bed with her, sitting on bed next to her, sitting on chair next to bed with your hand on bed near her, sit next to bed no hand, stand next to bed… etc

        • She was good for some time however the last few months wants someone in the room until she falls asleep. Doesn't need to be on or near the cot just in the room.

@Daves88: Then you don't need the double bed for starters.

But don't just accept it as normal that you have to wait in her bedroom every night until she falls asleep.

Any unwanted behavior is very easy to change in young children, don't wait until they are older and it's much more difficult.

"most likely get soiled whilst toilet training"
That's what plastic mattress protectors are for
    .

    • Something tells me there is still going to be accidents with this.

      • +1

They are pretty good at keeping the actual mattress clean.

Just remember it might not absorb everything so don't go flipping it off the bed when you are trying to change the sheets after an accident.

I bought king singles for my kids and even at 4.5yo there's a heap of room if you wanted to lay down and have a cuddle.

I mostly just use a chair next to the bed though, to read a book and have a little chat before lights out.

    • Yeah ditto, we gave our daughter the king single guest bed when we moved house & upgraded to a queen guest bed. It makes the bedtime cuddle a lot easier when i'm not hanging off the end of the bed!

That was from OMF, and cost like…$250 or something crazy like that

Why spend money on a toddler bed when you will end up buying a larger bed for them later? We went from cot to a single bed which left plenty of room for an adult to lay in with them if they needed it.

    • When I say toddler bed. Chasing a bed for a toddler. (So normal bed)

  • given it will most likely get soiled whilst toilet training

Where are you conducting the training?

  • Another suggestion is to use a trundle bed to transition from the cot. I didn't want to use those bed rails to prevent falls.

Unsure why a double bed is needed - single gives more than enough room & we used the excuse that we didn't fit properly to ensure kiddos didn't get used to us sleeping with them throughout the night.

Also, 2 year olds don't weigh enough to require a firm mattress.

Waterproof mattress protectors work well just make sure to air out the mattress regularly during high humidity to prevent mould.

      You are generalising

      • Oh my ….. looks like a kiddo from school whose grandparents spoil rotten.

But no way is he 2 years old.

        • In 2003, the Guinness World Record named Dzhambulat Khatokhov as the heaviest child weighing 75 pounds. Due to his weight, Dzhambulat made the headlines early in his life, making him the heaviest 2-year old ever recorded.

At age seven, he was named among the world’s biggest kids at 224 pounds.

His weight never stopped growing, and throughout his life, he kept recording a significant amount of weight gain. He would later make a name for himself as a Russian Sumo Wrestler before his death at age 21.

          • @jv: That's very sad & he lost his life so young.

He should have been saved from his parents.

  • Im sorry, what? Double bed?

My 6' teen is still in his standard single bed.

There's a lot of reasons to stick with singles - space, management, ease of finding covers, cost.

I'm 5'11 & my feet dangle off a single bed. You should get your teen a single long or king single, at the very least.

      • Im aware his feet dangle but we're between places atm.

My point being, if a grown ass adult can cope in a single, surely a 2 year old can.

And besides, has the OP ever considered the hassle of stripping and remaking a double at 3am? Doubt it.

There's times you don't want to tell another parent what to do, then there's times where you just think a double bed for a 2yo is ludicrous…

    • The double bed is useful when you get kicked out of your bed… :)

  • We bought one called Osteo Support from Mobile Mattress for our 6 year old. Super comfortable, came really quickly, happy days. Great for having people stay at our place too!

  • Highly recommend Zeek mattresses.
